Microsoft examines releasing games outside of Christmas photo

We gamers are all too aware by now of the pre-Christmas saturation period. October and November are usually full of the industry's blockbuster titles, all of them competing for our limited wallet contents, and all of them jostling violenty for the top spot. While the Q4 release rush is unlikely to die anytime soon, Microsoft is one of several companies looking to target dryer release periods.

"We still have a very seasonally-focused business," says euro marketing boss David Gosen. "You only need look at last Christmas, when nearly 200 titles were released in the space of three or four weeks. There was that crazy week, third week of November. The big brands reached the top and everything else was left by the wayside. It’s becoming harder and harder to establish new IP in that environment. You have to ask if that’s sustainable."

Gosen makes a fair point, especially when he points to Resident Evil 5, which was released in March and didn't have a lot of competition. Some bigger titles would do well to release earlier in the year, especially if evil publisher Activision is looking to top every Christmas chart with a new Call of Duty game. It's all very well releasing during the Holiday spending period, but what's the point in trying to capitalize on Christmas if you drown in a sea of other gamers trying to do exactly the same?

Besides which, I'm sure we'd all appreciate not having to wait until November for everything.

As far I understand the thought process it's related heavily to extending shelf life besides getting a big turnover in a small amount of time (and that amounts to the same thing).
I just hope publishers will rely more on digital distribution so they can space it all out a bit without having to care about visibility in a material sense.

I have seen Santa's tits. That's one more thing to cross off my list of things to accomplish.

If I may offer my own expert analysis: DUH, MICROSOFT!

What other holiday other than Black Friday or Christmas do people buy more stuff than usual?

I for one would like to see a blockbuster game come out before the Christmas sales push. When you get a bunch of your "must have" games released within a week or 2, unless your disposable income is quite ample, you end up doing some budgeting. But during that time I get a few games and tell myself I'll get the other later. But then I never pick the others up.

RE4 came out in January and RE5 came out in March, and those have done just fine. I feel like more publishers should go this route, especially since during the summer, when a lot of gamers have more time to play, too many complain about having nothing to do.

resi 5 and dark athena are two of my 'most wanted' for this year, and i already have em both. usually this time of year is boring as hell, so i guess devs/publishers have already realised that gamers will buy games all year round... if they release them.

still, christmas lost it's charm when i was 15, so it's nice to have something to look forward to.

Excellent. If Microsoft follow through on this it can only benefit gamers. Not only will lesser known and/or new IP's be able to get more traction at launch (Valkyria Chronicles, Mirror's Edge), but obviously unfinished games won't be rushed out for the holidays (KoTOR 2, I'm looking at you).

Easter. Seriously. The week leading up to Easter was packed and people were buying expensive items for their kids that weekend. Easter isn't just about candy anymore, its about presents.
