Microsoft drops 120 GB Xbox 360 hard drive down to $149 photo

With way too many LIVE Arcade titles, demos, various betas, videos, Rock Band DLC, and the forthcoming ability to install games directly onto your hard drive, I think it might be about time for me to upgrade my current 20 GB HDD.

Like many of you who bought the Xbox 360 at launch, I haven't gotten the 120 GB HDD primarily because it's just too damn expensive. But now, to coincide with the latest 360 price drops, the hard drive has also seen a cut in price.

GameDaily confirmed with Microsoft that the 120 GB hard drive will now go for $149 instead of the previous $179. While I would never call that a good deal by any means, it's not like there are many (any?) alternatives available.

Who else is dreading the day when you'll be forced to buy a new hard drive?

when an hdd is $50 less than a console, your pricing is fudged :)

I wish they'd drop it a little more. With my wife now loving Rock Band, and the impending purchase of #2, the DLC songs are slowly filling up the space left on my 20GB HDD. We've got 400 points set aside to move over the RB1 songs, which I'm sure are going to take up a good amount of space.

I heard that the 60GB is going to be priced at $99...which is somewhat stupid. For $50 more, I can get the 120? I was hoping the 60GB would be $70 or $80...it would work for us, but at $100, it would be smarter to by double the space for $50 more.

Gah. Wish the HDD wasn't proprietary.

I really don't want to have to buy a new HDD, but with more and more DLC coming out I'm starting to run out of room. Couple that with the fact XBLA games are stored there too and I'm left with only about 2 GB's left on my original. I've been having to download and delete game videos almost immediately after I watch them. Sad panda.

Surely the price is going to have to come down more than that? Adding the ability to install games could spur a lot of HDD sales, but not at that price I don't think. Does Microsoft think we don't know that the things sell for a third of that without the stupid housing and drive locking?

I think my hard drive is starting to fail on me (it's been corrupting my gamertag a lott and even made me reformat a few times deleting ALL of my game saves) and I've been running out of space on it constantly so unfortunately I'm probably going to have to get raped by this thing :[

You're right, there are absolutely no alternatives for the 360's storage, which is why Microsoft thinks they can charge this much for a hard drive that has virtually no space at all, when you get right down to it.

yeah this is EXACTLY why i broke down and bought the xbox360 elite when i got mine.. i figured it would come down to me NEEDING to download XBLA games and DLC. i was just lucky to get into the 360 game and i already knew what was going to happen with games like rock band.. and i already knew of a bunch of great xbla games

aaronf,

I find it hilarious that people are still trying to justify the purchase of a PS3 with that stupid math. I HAVE a PS3, and you know why I bought it over a 360? Because it had the games I wanted. The fact that you're further trying to justify the purchase of a PS3 shows that you yourself are actually questioning your own actions and need outside reassurance that you've made the right choice.

And let me break it down for ya a little more, if you get the wireless adaptor and the 120gb hard drive on ebay then it drops the total 360 price by $100 (maybe more once the HD price drop drives prices lower) to slightly BELOW that of the PS3. Plus 40gb more space of course.

OMG YOU BEENED HAD!!!

I've still got a good four gigs left on my hard drive, and I've already ripped all of the songs from Rock Band 1 to it. I'll hold out until there's absolutely no more space on my hard drive. $150 for a 120 gig hard drive is just too much, no question.

I really need a 160 gig drive, but then I think about 2 or 3 good games I can buy for that price in the upcoming months.

@DinnertimeNinja:

Actually, I'm perfectly comfortable with my platform choice. The reason I made the post is to defend the truth. Which is, the PS3 is in fact cheaper than the Xbox 360. Numbers do not lie. Argumentum ad nauseam does not make a statement true.

Now your bringing out the faulty logic of using eBay to lower your price. You can also purchase a PS3 on eBay, and still end up spending less in total than buying a new 360 and an HDD and wireless on eBay. Even if you buy an Arcade with no add-ons, you will still end up paying more over time because of the yearly LIVE fee.

Now, you could just buy an Arcade with no HDD, no wireless, and no LIVE. That would save you the most money. And maybe some people go this route. But a 360 with comparable functionality to a PS3 is not cheaper any way you slice it.

It's not about insecurity, it's about facts. And when you look at the facts, the 360 is more expensive than the PS3 in most cases.

I don't think I've seen anyone use the "PS3 is too expensive" argument in about half a year since they last dropped the price so the point is moot. I think it's finally come down to the which "system has the most games I want to play" decision which is where it should be.

I think they should drop the price a lot more then that. Bit unfair saying that we can store our games to our Hard drive and then make us shell out 3x's the amount for a 120GB with some fancy case.

Surely there must be a way out there to fix a case to a ordinary 120GB hard drive. I mean, there not made exclusively for MS so surely you can use other brands and model HD?

I got my 320 gb hard drive for my PS3 for that price, $157.00. So 8 dollars more for almost triple the memory. Not worth it.

Honestly who needs that much space? Who out there is, right now, downloading that many movies, demos, and arcade games that they are running out of their standard 20GB.

All the stuff you download with the exception of Rock Band and Guitar Hero songs are temporary keeps.
Also the arcade games are MAX 150MB.

BUt now with the installs that will run out very quickly.

I've been running out of space constantly on mine. It's mostly full with XBLA games and Rock Band content. If I want to download a movie or tv show in HD that's like 2GB right there. Granted I can always go in and clear some stuff but that's the Nintendo way of going about things. I'd rather just not have to worry about it.

I've been hovering around less the 1G of available space for the past couple of months. Those last few XBLA games took a lot of space, and I can only imagine future games to take up even more. Then I've got demos on queue and yet to be played.

I wish I had the luxury of a huge hard drive, but that price is bullshit. I'll be waiting for third party/external HD support, and if that means I'll be waiting for a long time so be it.

In other news, Microsoft will allow 3rd party hard drives in it's next generation console, and then make the claim that it was in development long before other consoles supported it.

Out of curiosity, I looked up external hard drives that would cost as much as this one.

For almost the same price as 120GB for an Xbox 360, you can get 1TB for a PC. That's 8.33x the space. That's also fucking ridiculous.

120 GB for 94 dollars? I've got a 250 gig in my PS3 right now and it cost me 95 dollars. Man, why can't Microsoft just do right and stop screwing their customers? He'll it's not like you ever get to see this alleged 20GB drive on the system anyways. I know when I reformated mine it showed that I had 13 GB. WTF? That's damn near half of my drive already gone.

Or maybe i could just buy an Xbox360 with a 60Gb HD .. 20GB less than a Ps3 (oh noes)
for $299
u dont need to have a Xbox wireless adapter to connect to the net (nowayz)
1 year Xbox Live $50

oh, would u look at that... $349 ?!?
still $50 cheaper than Ps3
and theres a reason u pay for Xbox Live... because it kicks ass, u think they run all their servers for free?
well Ps3 obviously do because Psn is a joke.

So looks like Xbox is cheaper and still has it over Ps3.
GG.
