Microsoft doesn't think PS3 Netflix is a big deal photo

So, the PlayStation 3 will be getting Netflix, and what's more, it'll be providing the service without Xbox Live's obligatory entry price. Sony will have the edge, since customers will only need to pay the $8.99 Netflix fee as opposed to $8.99 plus a Gold membership to Xbox Live. That said, Microsoft doesn't seem to care, believing that Xbox Live is still a "generation ahead" of the competition.

"The Netflix experience on Xbox LIVE is unique and reflects our commitment for social entertainment. We believe we offer an experience today that is a generation ahead of what others are offering," said an MS spokesman, in response to the PS3's new coup. "For a little over $4 a month Xbox LIVE Gold membership is hands-down the best value in home entertainment, and gives you exclusive access multi-player gaming and early demos as well as Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Last.fm, 1 vs 100 and more."

Of course, a lot of that is BS -- you don't need Xbox Live to access Facebook, Twitter, Netflix and Last.fm. You also don't get "early" access to demos, since all Microsoft does is delay demos for Silver members rather than put them up early for Gold ones. Also, the last I checked, online multiplayer wasn't exclusive to the 360. Oh, and 1 vs. 100 will only ever be a selling point to idiots.

What this response seems to say more than anything is, "We're not dropping the Xbox Live subscription free, nyah nyah nyah." Fair enough, I suppose.

Wow. The best value in home entertainment? Who the fuck are they kidding? I pay 50 bucks a year for that shit and it's really not that much better than PSN. Sure it is superior but how much is that superiority worth? Not 50 bucks a year.

And yet here I am, paying that 50 bucks a year.

MS makes me feel like a sucker sometimes.

Infact, 60 player resistance 2 is pretty much lag free which still kinda blows my mind....to bad 8 player halo 3 still seems to chug all the time for me.

From my experience, XBL, although crawling with little kids, HAS been better than PSN. I don't really mind paying for that.

Funny...I never thought Netflix was a big deal, even back so far as LAST WEEK when Xbots were asking "d00d...howcome PS3 doesn't have Netflix, huh? Huh?? Xbox rules, Sony drools...NETFLIX, BABY!!!"

Fanboys are such funny, funny jokes. The only people not laughing are their mothers.

LMAO...Patcher predicted XBL Gold would go up to $100/year. When asked about it, M$ mouthpiece David Dennis said, "I don't foresee a scenario where we're going to double the price of LIVE anytime in the next couple months."

So really...even though I don't use Netflix as Blockbuster's mail service is only about a BILLION times better, more efficient and more convenient...this is fun because now not only does Xbot have ONE LESS exclusive feature to be annoying about...BUT HE'S GOTTA PAY $50 A YEAR JUST TO BE ABLE TO USE THE SERVICE THAT HE PAYS ANOTHER SUBSCRIPTION FEE FOR!!

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Seriously though...Netflix is meaningless fluff. The PS Store already has tens of thousands of movies and TV shows available (most also available in HD) ala carte...and you can even purchase them if you want.

Netflix integration is devoid of ACTUAL value in a console. So is Twitter and Facebook integration. I don't do Twitter (because I'm not gay) and Playstation 3's browser hooks up with Facebook just fine, so there's no need to pursue that garbage either.

So no...this is NOT a big deal in terms of console value.

However until it was announced for PS3, EVERY XBOT ON EARTH would always honk on XBL's Netflix integration as proof that XBL is better than PSN. Now that's one more thing they can STFU about...and THAT is f'ing PRICELESS.

It's this kind of thing that surely must have MS wondering why they still charge for Live.

Netflix charges $9 for actual content, every month, as much as you want.

MS charges $4 not to be blocked out of updates and services freely availiable elsewhere.

Good Going MS, you're sounding less like a douche each year ;)

See... We were on the train going to the fair recently here in Texas and we struck up a conversation about video games (my friends and I). We were talking about the recent Batman game, Katamari Forever on PS3, and The New Super Mario Brothers Wii. Out of nowhere, a 13 year old kid says "Have you guys played Halo ODST!?" we promptly said "No."

His response: "Oh my Gosh. Really? Xbox Live is awesome with Halo. I can't even speak to you guys!" and the brat immediately turns around and doesn't say anything else until we continue on with our conversation.

Rare occasion #2: I agree with Mr. Sterling here. This is just a bullshit "Oh btw, I know you can get it without subscription fees now, but Xbox Live is still going to cost you money! :D"

Right.

Yup, that's it, DVD Player with powerful graphics card, no WiFi, batteries in your controllers, no browser, massive failure rate, "special" HDD, extra paid for integral features, and pretty much the same current gen games as the competition, apart from all the sick AAA PS3 exclusives.

Yup, that's such a generation ahead. Try a fucking generation BEHIND! or at the very least, half a generation.

Microsoft has been the innovator for online console gaming and Sony's been playing catch up this whole generation. The problem for Microsoft is that Sony's finally catching up and is offering the same service sans the $50 a year fee. Microsoft's going to have to either continue to innovate in order justify charging for online gaming or just drop the fee altogether.

@ TheGlue29: You yourself are living breathing proof that fanboys are funny things. $50 a year really isn't even that bad at all if you think about it. Even if you have a job with minimum wage, you have to work a max off 8 hours (depending on the state) and you've payed for it for a year.

@ Sexualchocolate: How many blu-ray DVD's do you own, and how often do you watch them on your PS3? How reliable is your wireless connection? Stop pretending you're superior.

Can't wait to see what other bullshit PS3 fanboys pull out of their ass because they don't like something they probably don't know shit about...

@ TheGlue29: funny that you start by dismissing "fanboys", and then go on a diatribe about how Blockbuster online is so superior to Netflix.

Also, you can barely compare Netflix to a selection of pay-per-title movies available. with Netflix, that $9/month gets you as many movies and tv shows as you want, whereas I'd be surprised if you could rent 2 from PSN for the same money.

@Sexualchocolate: what do PS3 controllers run on? Magic dust?

And finally, in response to the article, I'm glad that PS3 is getting Netflix because that's the ONLY reason I pay for my Live account(and really, i COULD just use playon except that the 360 player is SO much nicer). It's not like I'm going to play games online with 12 year olds. So anyway, once I have a PS3 in my house, I'll be able to save my money.

But seriously, I'd rather do the regular Netflix service of getting the discs. I don't have incredible net speed and I'm sure there are others out there with similar circumstances. Yeah, it may be easier to stream and discs can wind up scratched, but I have an upscaling DVD player and neither system. =P

Wheatspin - I own about 10 Blurays, i rent about 10 a month by post from lovefilm.co.uk and I fucking love them! They look a million times better than a DVD on my LCD TV. Also, PlayTV with it's upscaler makes normal, and recorded TV look superb too! - Hell even Youtube looks sick on my PS3, what with it's special TV version, but you wouldn't know about that without a browser, eh?

And my Wireless connection is 100% perfect, thanks. About 5/6 button presses, type in the WEP code and the things is online as and when i need it. Everytime. 10mb/s nice quick DL's from the PSN, Youtube, Iplayer, Browser, Gaming.

I still fail to see your point.

I'm not sure what "a generation ahead" is even supposed to mean in this case... what constitutes "a generation" when it comes to the addition of bonus features that only like six people will use anyway? I can't imagine anybody using a 360 for ANYTHING outside of playing games. It's a piece of shit. If i wanted to twitter what games i was playing, (and i wouldn't because twitter is dumb as rocks and if anybody actually cared that i was "putting disk in shitty fucking xbox lol" i would probably disown them,) i would use a cellphone. You know, that piece of technology that twitter is fundamentally based on. I'd just stick to my PS3 if all the cross-platform games didn't fail so hard on it.

I don't speak for every PS3 owners out there but I have NEVER had a wireless connection problem, EVER. There's absolutely no reason not to have a built-in Wifi adapter in this day and age. My $200 Netbook has one.

Edit: 360 controllers that don't come with RECHARGABLE batteries.

Such a generation ahead!

The only arguments I've heard towards the Live is better than PSN argument is cross game chat and the party system. Apart from that, it's worth $50 a year more why?

Read through the comments on this site, have you noticed something recently?

This place used to be brimming with xbox fanboys, we PS3 users were a minority, the times are changing, an influx of "i'm getting a PS3" comments. Then a very clear increase in the pro PS3 comments.

PS3 users don't use headsets much, true. I'll tell you why.

360 users are GENERALLY 12-18, playing in their bedrooms, ON THEIR OWN. Shouting cunt, Nigger, fuck and Ghey at each other.

PS3 users are GENERALLY 18+, have their own place, play in the living room with friends, partner, own kids etc. It's fucking rude to sit on a game with a headset on when you've got company for real.

FACT.

When i'm playing with my buddies, all of which are aged between 25 + 50! I'll put it on, when I'm playing with randomers, i won't bother.

This isn't a fucking higschool with a sense of community, this is an onlie gaming service, not fucking myspace. - No wonder they introduced Twitter, all the kids are into Twitter! - if you want community, go play some pool together in Home? Or is that not enough community for you?

Only idiots pay the full 50$ a year for XBOX LIVE....everyone knows that you can always get the membership cards AND point cards for discounted prices throughout the entire year.

I've been a member of XBOX LIVE from day 1 and have yet to pay over 30-35 for my annual renewals ....in fact thanks to the fact you used to be able to get the membership cards at the TRU b2g1 sale......my membership is paid up for 3+ years.

Anyhoo.....You get what you pay for.....PSN still has a loooooong way to go. Its interface and matchmaking systems are just not very fluid or intuitive. I have FIOS and the performance I get with PSN games is sorely lacking.....until they require voice game chat for their games instead of making it an option like it seems for most games Multiplayer games will continue to suffer.

Also, at hyurriage I never dissed bluray. I have someone who lives on my floor that has a player built into his PC. The quality is amazing. £12.50 a month, unlimited rentals buddy. Far more value than LIVE, a service I can get for free on my PS3. - As someone else said: It's not about the price, it's about the value.

I'm not being elitist, it's nothing about being l33t it's about people spouting "LIVE IS TEH BETTURIST" without substantiating their claims. i'm simply putting across my side of PSN is far better than LIVe, thus voiding the argument that LIVE is worth paying for. I'm not saying I'm better, I'm saying I chose the better online gaming service.

Also, I don't have the link right now, but check the Nielsens data for console usage. The link is floating about this site in a couple of places, one of my recent comments has it.

360 - 12 to 18 year old males, and surprisingly older femals.
PS3 - 18 to 24 year olds, and if I remember correctly, similar age females.
Wii - everyone else.

When GENERALLY is clearly stated, how can i be accused over generalising?!

Batteries - I've seen plenty of my friends going through duracell AA's with their 360 controllers, don't give me that shit. They don't fucking come with powerpacks / rechargables, it's yet another extra hidden-from-mummy-at-christmas-time cost, just like LIVE is.

@Wheatspin: At the risk of sounding like I'm defending sexualchocolate here (believe me, I'm not), I can't help but refute some of your points.

"Sexualchocolate, if you have the money to rent 10 bluray movies per month, then why are you whining about the $50 A YEAR it costs for XBL."

It's the principle of the thing. Why pay for something that should be free? I think that's a valid argument.

"And finally, 360 controllers DO have rechargeable batteries."

Don't you have to buy those extra?

"The majority of people I play on XBL with ate 20+."

I suggest you and sexchoco look up the term "statistical significance". That said, I do believe there was a study done that found 360 owners to generally be younger. I'm not going to bother trying to find it, because who even knows how reliable is. But really, I think it's pretty safe to assume that ON AVERAGE, the typical 360 owner is younger than the typical PS3 owner.

"Frankly, I think it's a great idea, but there's just not enough GOOD movies on them."

Uh, what movies would you like to see on blu ray that aren't already?

Of course MS isn't worried about PS3 getting Netflix, just like Nintendo isn't worried about the others getting motion control. Because they think if they deny concern it won't be an issue.

Of course they care, at least they should. As PSN gets better and remains free, MS will have to add things to justify charging. 1vs.100 can be a fun distraction, but it sure isn't worth $50 a year. Online multiplayer is available on PSN, so that isn't a real selling point for MS as much.

Granted, I like Live better than PSN, but not by much. Unfortunately, I just paid for the yeara few months, so I'll have Gold member status for about another 9, but if there isn't anything that truly separates Live from PSN, I won't be renewing.
