Microsoft cuts Kratos' head off, mounts it as a trophy photo

Okay, stupid story time, but the implications are very obvious. The latest edition of Xbox Live's "Inside Xbox" series is a Halloween edition, and as such, it makes use of stereotypically scary imagery. The episode's NXE panel shows some heads mounted on a wall as hunting trophies, but what's this? Isn't that one Kratos? Why yes, I do believe it is.

It appears that Microsoft has killed and beheaded the star of PS3 exclusive God of War III. This is of course a rather cheeky jab at the competition, which is doubly hilarious since I believe Kratos could kick seven shades of sh*t out of any Microsoft executive on any day of the week.

Anyway, what do you think of this? Amusing jibe, or tasteless insult? I guess that all depends on which side of the fanboy fence you sit.

And before you ask, yes it is a slow news day.

God of War III coming to the Xbox 360, you heard it first here.

It would be funny if it made any sense.

I wouldn't call it "tasteless," especially since Kratos is not a real personage and, therefore, it would be difficult to imagine his taking offense to the incident.

I think "stupid" and "childish" are somewhat apt. Microsoft is usually above this kind of cheeky raspberry-blowing conduct. Most businesses refrain from directly insulting the competition because it often comes across as uncreative and boorish. I don't know if this quite crosses the line, but it certainly makes one wonder why MS couldn't think up any better ideas. Maybe they fired all their best marketing people?

The video is in black and white and Kratos' head is unrecognizable. I actually watched just to see if it had anything to do with God of War. Nope. Just a lame joke about friend requests and "death by game disc."

Is MS so scared of the GOW franchise that they decided to cut his head off? They'd fail miserably of course, seeing that Kratos is actually a heap of textures, polygons and a bajiliion lines of code.

I would think that the days before Halloween should crop up to several accounts of holiday-induced stupidity.

I saw that yesterday, and I was like "LOL WTF."
I think it's pretty funny. Sony should respond by mounting Master Chief's head on a wall.

People are reading way too far into this. I though tit was kind of funny. And I totally agree with Shadowii - if Sony did the same thing with Master Chief, I'd laugh my ass off.

Given the nature of these things, I would expect to see a response from Sony. If they don't come up with a cutting bon mot (probably in the form of an equally strange image), I would be somewhat surprised. If I were Sony, I would wait and make a reference to the MS image as an easter egg in a future game.

Balmer is a freak. He'd just thrash and jump around randomly like an ape and take Kratos down and never even know he'd done it. He's like a runaway train on meth.

Kratos > Microsoft.

O and @ Gains...not sure but you may want to go see an optometrist. That's CLEARLY Kratos' head. No ifs ands or buts about it.

I think it would have been funnier (or, at the very least, would have made more sense) if all three of the heads had been Sony mascots (like maybe Kratos, Sackboy and Ratchet/Klank?).

Just Greek gods. And even then it's because the god fly around in easy to learn patterns and because Kratos won't stay dead.

Kratos would easily defeat a Microsoft executive?

Does it need to be said that most protagonists would effortlessly massacre normal human beings?

Anyway, I bet somebody in a Microsoft emblazoned building is chuckling to themselves over this.
