Microsoft confirms internal memory in new Xbox 360 Arcades photo

It had existed as a rumor for a while, but the news of Xbox 360 Arcades shipping with 265MB of internal storage has now been confirmed by Microsoft. Arcade units will no longer need external memory cards, coming packed with the tools needed to save a couple of games and remind you that you need a hard drive.

"We are constantly updating the console's more than 1700 internal components," confirmed an MS rep. "We can confirm that we are moving to internal memory for the Xbox 360 Arcade. The physical internal memory is the same size as the previous external memory units -- 256MB."

Is it just me, or has this generation seen a ridiculous amount of SKU releases and updates? It's largley due to rise of the blogs that have seen this kind of stuff reported on more, but I still don't recall the PlayStation 2 and Xbox having this much crap on the shelves.

And then we have the Wii, which hasn't changed in all the time it's been released, outselling the lot of it.

I really don't have any interest in the Arcade, but is there a way to tell via SKU number or part number which XB360 is which? I'm sure that anyone who wants to get a 360 now but can only get the Arcade will want the 256 MB version.

@ John B: Maybe not, since MS has that deal where you can get a refurbished 20 gig HD & 3 months of live for $29.99 (but not if you have one of the newer Arcade units with 256MB of internal memory).

Wrong. PS2 had many hardware revisions. The first three PS2s didn't have the expansion bay. The first 2 PS2 didn't play DVD movies.The fourth revision had a completely different motherboard. The sixth PS2 had a completely different power button setup. The ninth PS2 added the possibility to play DVD-RW. And the last two revisions had minor differences. This, of course, is about the NOT slim version.

Wii on the other hand had only three revisions up to now, that I know of. And there's another one planed. The changes? I believe it's just security changes. People say, also, that the first Wii has problems running Smash Brawl, but I can't confirm that.

I think this mainly evidences consumer ignorance. Not to take anything away from the Wii console, but I think an informed consumer would find it hard to justify a Wii purchase (@ $250) over an Xbox 360 (@ $200) at this point, at least in terms of price to value/functionality.

I still don;t understand why MS don't just say "hey, we did this". If I'm buying a car and suddenly found it had an extra seat, after being sold it, I would be a bit miffed.

@Mxyzptlk:

Yes, but the main reason why I'm not interested in the Arcade is that I want an HDMI port, which I believe the arcade doesn't have. Still, if it comes down to straight $$$, I can deal without the HDMI.

Search anandtech for the definitive list but here are the ways to confirm a jasper:
Arcade without an external mem unit
Or
Psu rated at 150watt (or 12.1A shows on the back of the 360 - need to move the console to see in the window)

Also they didn't start making jasper until mid October so don't buy anything with a build date before then ( you can see the build date in the window easily by pushing it down )

Rational animal: Nope, you don't understand the Wii. That's fine, few gamers do. Don't just assume that there's all this ignorance as much as lack of interest. The 360 doesn't deliver what those people want. Believe it or not, gaming can appeal to people without hardcore tastes, and those people aren't stupid.

They should just start bundling the arcade with a motion sensing remote, call it the Xii and be done with it.

@John B:

The arcade has an HDMI port, it just doesn't come with an HDMI cable.

@redzie - the jasper is the revision that should solve the issue. It introduces the 65nm gpu chip, replacing the 90nm chip that was causing boards to warp. The falcon had only shrunk the CPU which wasn't causing problems in the first place.

Smart idea. I kind of wish they'd switched the Arcades out for the 20GB versions, though. Would've made more sense.

"I think this mainly evidences consumer ignorance."

Consumer ignorance is pretty much a given. You don't need to evidence that. What's really interesting is how beutifully it evidences manufacturer ignorance.

Consumers in general don't want to have to choose, they want commercials to tell them in the simplest possible way what to buy. It's just staggering that Microsoft and Sony don't get this, especially since both companies historically made their fortune on this principle.
