There's a fine line between confidence and ignorance, and it seems that Microsoft is willing to skate along that line with all the grace of a testicle. While gamers are faced with the constant worry of their consoles perishing on them, Microsoft coolly presides over its parade of the dead and tells the world that we shouldn't panic. With Microsoft, everything's going to be okay.
"[MS] feel very confident in the quality of the consoles that we are producing," stated Shane Kim, instantly making Xbox 360 owners everywhere feel a million times happier about their fragile hardware. "Customers should be confident that we are applying the same focus and commitment to quality in our hardware as we are to our software and services."
That last sentence doesn't make me feel any better, by the way. Not by a long shot.
"We certainly regret the issues that some customers have experienced with Xbox 360, which is why we took the step of extending our warranty to an unprecedented three years," Kim continued. "Our hardware experience and talent continue to grow."
Ah, okay. Now everything is fine.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Well they should just keep making sure.
<pig laugh>
also, some customers??? HAHAHAHAHA
There. Angriest thing you'll see me do. Not even ten hours ago, my roommate finally got a XBLA points card for his system with the express intent of dl-ing Ikaruga. And just as I was going online to get my shmup-y goodness on, RROD.
SO, my roomie immediately calls them up to get this "extended warranty" activated, he is told it doesn't apply to him. He bought the system off of somebody else. Not the original owner, so it costs him a cool hundred dollars to repair.
Way to stand behind your defective product, Microsoft.
How're your PS3's working guys? My next console will not be a 360, and my tax refund is coming soon.
I lol'ed.
You aren't the only one. That's hilarious, Jim.
I was pretty pissed about having to send my RRoD'd 360 back to M$. Glad they have faith in their product, though.
Seriously Microsoft. Fix of GTFO. If I want to hear someone whine, i'll go to 4chan.
I went with buying a used one from some well-to-do and responsible young executive bachelor type who never played it anyway. Very good condition. All peripherals. Not registered w/ MS yet... Practically new!
For 150 bucks. Fine with me. If this one cranks it to 13, though, I think I'll send it in and eat the $100. I'd go PS3, but I like me 360 friends too much. Probably getting one anyway when MGS4 comes out...
So... the red ring of death is merely the blue screen of death reborn. It all makes sense now.
The percentage of 360 owners who have had RRODs has got to be near the 40% range.
And it's not because it was enjoyable for me to go the midnight launch of the console (locally), just to have it fail on me and replaced three different times -- and be stuck with about 60 games with nothing to play them on, while waiting for those replacements to arrive.
Hey Shane, tell me that when I don't continue to see Cbloggers on the site every single week going through what I went through, before wisening up.
If I were a 360 owner that sentence would scare the shit out of me. 1 word...Vista. A software product that while might appeal to some, its the bane of many people and IT guys I know. From what they say "it looks pretty, but runs like shit." Shit I even thought of getting a Mac if it didn't turn me into a condecending asshole.
I know its to late now, and I'm not sure if Microsoft could have seen this RROD issue coming before the console was released, but to me the smart thing to do instead of the 3 year warranty thing, was to fix the issue immeadiatly. Recall and replace all older versions and only sell the new fixed ones. This console battle could have been completly different if they didn't have this issue.
"[Irish accent]: “I’ll believe ya when me shit turns purple and smells like rainbow sherbet!”
Love the super trooper reference if my memory serves.
The fact is Microsoft is that your hardware is flimsy. While the Xbox 360 is a fantastic machine, it is unreliable and crumbles to pieces like a dried up cookie.
I have witnessed two RRoD's at friends houses and to date, every single person I know has had the Red Ring of Death, apart from myself and two others (this is out of 20 people mind you).
I do believe that Microsoft is trying to fix the problem but so far we are all walking in the valley of the shadow of death with our 360's.
I love my Xbox 360 but once I get the RRoD I don't think I am going to touch it, I can only hope I have one of these magical 'good' 360's that Microsoft are talking about whereby they never get the RRoD or suffer from any other defect.
One can only dream.... -_-
i like the "talent" part....
its the BS heaven
I'm kinda hoping it red rings soon so it's still inside warranty :(
Also "with all the grace of a testicle", wat.

Fail, on both their parts
In the meantime, if Sony drops their price and stops this multiple sku nonsense I may buy one of those instead. I'm still on the fence so it's their move. In the meantime, I'm happy with my Wii and my PC, so take your time guys.
Also I don't think Xbox is no longer a % of failure but an eventual failure of the entire generation of Xboxs. So basically 100% (eventually). Seriously.
Cut the bullshit, and just say, "Yeah bad design choice by us, we will fix it for sure." thats all and then fix the damn issue!
Dammit, why do they have to have the best games and the best online service? *pouts* This is maddening. I'm afraid of buying a 360, and that's just not right.
But since I bitched at them (they also left a piece of tin foil in my cd tray that I happened to find when the console couldn't read my disc..) they said that they are going to put in a request for a new 360 for me instead of repairing my old one. So I suppose I'll be getting a refurbished one that'll break soon after. As soon as I beat Mass Effect I really want to trade it in with all of my games to buy a PS3.
Microsoft, you make me want to strangle you sometimes.
mine bricked, i threw it out.
That explains why some game freeze my xbox :P
I have no idea what that means.
The PSX and PS2 were such horrible designs they had class action law suits filed against them. Most people went through 4-5 Playstations in both generations. Microsoft might have shitty quality consoles, but Sony is hardly the bastion of reliability.
Meanwhile the 360 has been out for well over a year now and they still can't get it right.
With my PS2, the first one was a used one...Gamestop had a deal to get a used system with two new games, or something like that. Bought it several months after launch. The system was a failure the minute I hooked it up...it would play DVD discs, but not CD discs. Or was it vice-versa? Anyway, brought it back, they had no more used ones, so I got a new one (that was back when I knew one of the guys that worked there, so he was cool with me). Been working since (knock on wood).
So, that being said, technically my Sony systems have been defect free. I mean, first PS1 was dropped, first PS2 was used and almost immediately returned. Same with my Nintendo systems...NES still works (with a few minor repairs to the 72-pin connector), my brother has my working SNES, GameCube works, and Wii works. So, I'm comfortable buying from these two companies.
Microsoft? I'll pass for now. Too many stories about 360's red-ringing and the original crapping out. I've known people who had problems with both consoles multiple times, but the same people never had many problems with their other consoles.
And no, I'm not a fanboy. If a console has good games, I'm there. I would just like to keep my consoles longer than 6 months-1 year before it needs to be repaired...preferably never having to get it repaired.
