Microsoft 'confident' in hardware quality ... glad somebody is photo

There's a fine line between confidence and ignorance, and it seems that Microsoft is willing to skate along that line with all the grace of a testicle. While gamers are faced with the constant worry of their consoles perishing on them, Microsoft coolly presides over its parade of the dead and tells the world that we shouldn't panic. With Microsoft, everything's going to be okay.

"[MS] feel very confident in the quality of the consoles that we are producing," stated Shane Kim, instantly making Xbox 360 owners everywhere feel a million times happier about their fragile hardware. "Customers should be confident that we are applying the same focus and commitment to quality in our hardware as we are to our software and services."

That last sentence doesn't make me feel any better, by the way. Not by a long shot.

"We certainly regret the issues that some customers have experienced with Xbox 360, which is why we took the step of extending our warranty to an unprecedented three years," Kim continued. "Our hardware experience and talent continue to grow."

Ah, okay. Now everything is fine.

In other words, they know the "f"ed up, but they are still working on getting it right.

Well they should just keep making sure.

What they need to do is a "Buy one Xbox 360, get one free" deal. That way when the first one craps out you've no need to send away for a replacement.

Yeah... Just had my 360 belly up on me this week and rear the dread RRoD at me. I've had it since shortly after the 360 originally hit the market so in other words my warranty ran out 1 year 3 days ago... Have yet to call to find out how much F'in $ MS is gonna want from me to get the thing fixed. And right before the GTA4 release no less >:(

Now, I'm not an angry person by any means. You'll never see me freak out on somebody even if they desperately deserve it. BUT FUCK MICROSOFT.
There. Angriest thing you'll see me do. Not even ten hours ago, my roommate finally got a XBLA points card for his system with the express intent of dl-ing Ikaruga. And just as I was going online to get my shmup-y goodness on, RROD.
SO, my roomie immediately calls them up to get this "extended warranty" activated, he is told it doesn't apply to him. He bought the system off of somebody else. Not the original owner, so it costs him a cool hundred dollars to repair.
Way to stand behind your defective product, Microsoft.
How're your PS3's working guys? My next console will not be a 360, and my tax refund is coming soon.

These console failures are the reason I haven't bought a 360. That and I'm cheap. But still, my friend bought an 360, and then won one, and both of them crapped out on him in 6 months after getting them. The extended warranty is nice, but consoles that don't break at all is better.

Was thinking the same thing Haxan. My brother picked up a PS3 over the holiday. As much as i've liked my 360 it's complete bullshit that they expect people to pay to repair a product that was shipped with faulty hardware. I figure maybe I should just go pre-order a copy of MGS3 and check out the Metal Gear Online Beta... Hell might just play GTA4 on the PS3. Was leaning toward the 360 because I really enjoy the achievement/gamerscore system but fuck it man.

Some say that the faiulure rate has dropped with the new ones to 3%. I think that the number is "low" because it hasnt been in the market for long enough.

I hear alot about the RROD's, but I had the Unreadable Disc error (i.e. the disc spinning motor crapped out). That's in no way covered at all under that extended warranty.

I went with buying a used one from some well-to-do and responsible young executive bachelor type who never played it anyway. Very good condition. All peripherals. Not registered w/ MS yet... Practically new!

For 150 bucks. Fine with me. If this one cranks it to 13, though, I think I'll send it in and eat the $100. I'd go PS3, but I like me 360 friends too much. Probably getting one anyway when MGS4 comes out...

The sad thing is that in the grand scheme of things, the RRoD doesn't matter. Yeah it's a terrible and damnable thing, but it's more than obvious now that people are willing to put up with it to play games. It sure isn't hurting 360 sales, at least.

I only have one thing to say to Shane Kim: There's a reason why I am only buying games for my Xbox 360 that are exclusive to the console, these days.

And it's not because it was enjoyable for me to go the midnight launch of the console (locally), just to have it fail on me and replaced three different times -- and be stuck with about 60 games with nothing to play them on, while waiting for those replacements to arrive.

Hey Shane, tell me that when I don't continue to see Cbloggers on the site every single week going through what I went through, before wisening up.

If I were a 360 owner that sentence would scare the shit out of me. 1 word...Vista. A software product that while might appeal to some, its the bane of many people and IT guys I know. From what they say "it looks pretty, but runs like shit." Shit I even thought of getting a Mac if it didn't turn me into a condecending asshole.

I know its to late now, and I'm not sure if Microsoft could have seen this RROD issue coming before the console was released, but to me the smart thing to do instead of the 3 year warranty thing, was to fix the issue immeadiatly. Recall and replace all older versions and only sell the new fixed ones. This console battle could have been completly different if they didn't have this issue.

Microsoft lie all the time and so do other big companies with a large monopoly.

The fact is Microsoft is that your hardware is flimsy. While the Xbox 360 is a fantastic machine, it is unreliable and crumbles to pieces like a dried up cookie.

I have witnessed two RRoD's at friends houses and to date, every single person I know has had the Red Ring of Death, apart from myself and two others (this is out of 20 people mind you).

I do believe that Microsoft is trying to fix the problem but so far we are all walking in the valley of the shadow of death with our 360's.

I love my Xbox 360 but once I get the RRoD I don't think I am going to touch it, I can only hope I have one of these magical 'good' 360's that Microsoft are talking about whereby they never get the RRoD or suffer from any other defect.

One can only dream.... -_-

Once they fix this nonsense, I might buy one - and I know at least 5 people who feel the same as me. It's a shame. For those who that their bad craftmanship isn't hindering their sales, I don't think that's the case. I think there are many folks like me who are waiting for them to get it right.

In the meantime, if Sony drops their price and stops this multiple sku nonsense I may buy one of those instead. I'm still on the fence so it's their move. In the meantime, I'm happy with my Wii and my PC, so take your time guys.

Well I'm glad some people are realizing that having a PS3 over an Xbox isn't only about games, but pure principle. Simply, it works. Not only does it work but Sony actively strives to improve. My PS3 is currently out of warranty and I can honestly say I'm not worried in the least bit.

Also I don't think Xbox is no longer a % of failure but an eventual failure of the entire generation of Xboxs. So basically 100% (eventually). Seriously.

"We just can't do that" thats all they said, I said pull of an HDMI premium console, instead of an old one its hard! GEEZ! Confident my ass, customer service sucks!

Cut the bullshit, and just say, "Yeah bad design choice by us, we will fix it for sure." thats all and then fix the damn issue!

Fucking dammit. I really, really hate Microsoft's arrogance. They have to, have to, HAVE TO know that they have what is probably close to a 50% hardware failure rate. I mean, seriously, every two out of three 360 owners I've met have had hardware problems, some more than once. Ask Nick Chester. Ask Brian Crecente. The 360 is shitty, shitty hardware.

Dammit, why do they have to have the best games and the best online service? *pouts* This is maddening. I'm afraid of buying a 360, and that's just not right.

Right no problems. After my 360 red ringed they were kind enough to send me refurbished replacement that red ringed itself only 5 minutes after being out of the box. When i dropped off the second xbox at the courier there was 3 other people there doing the same thing, this on a typical tuesday morning in a small city. The second refurb they sent me sounds like a fucking airplane engine and makes grinding and grunting noises worthy of a cheap porn flick. To top it off some of my arcade titles mysteriously turned back into demos which is a whole other issue that people have been experiencing that microsoft wants to ignore.

I got my 2nd 360 back 3 weeks ago. 1 week into playing it casually (5 hours a week basically) it red ringed again. I went to xbox.com and submitted a repair request. After days of checking it was still in the queue for processing my repair order.. So after a week of that BS I called. Apparently their system had some error that wasn;t allowing my repair request to go through.

But since I bitched at them (they also left a piece of tin foil in my cd tray that I happened to find when the console couldn't read my disc..) they said that they are going to put in a request for a new 360 for me instead of repairing my old one. So I suppose I'll be getting a refurbished one that'll break soon after. As soon as I beat Mass Effect I really want to trade it in with all of my games to buy a PS3.

This is funny there is 42 commets on this topic and out of the 42 34 of them have had the RROD or known some one that has had it. I my self suffered this aswell and after my fist time i Microsoft would have resolved this hardware problem by now. Nope they want us to purchase new systems to make more bucks. I had several friend purchase a second or third unit before the warranty was exstended. I also know a few chaps that have gotten shafted on the new warranty aswell. So like many other posters i just dont believe a word Microsoft says.

While people with rrod's will be more likely to post here, exaggerating the numbers, it is also possible the rrod rate is higher than the officially accepted numbers. For one thing, hardcore gamers are more likely to bump into the issue because they are passing more time playing, also reducing the overall rrod rate because not all people play as much as them, maybe if people did so, the rrod rate would be (a number right out me ass) 80%..

By the way, why do people keep pointing to Sony as "The company that can make a good console..OURS aren't breaking!".

The PSX and PS2 were such horrible designs they had class action law suits filed against them. Most people went through 4-5 Playstations in both generations. Microsoft might have shitty quality consoles, but Sony is hardly the bastion of reliability.

Maybe it's just because I sensibly waited at least a year before I bought either of my Playstations, and my PS1 still works, I was playing Suikoden 2 on it the other day because my sister borrowed the PS2, the big fat PS2 which still works, because she left her slim elsewhere.

Meanwhile the 360 has been out for well over a year now and they still can't get it right.

I went through 2 PS1's and 2 PS2's. My first PS1 was a near-launch model that lasted a good amount of time. One day, it just froze everytime a game would load. Found out one of my siblings dropped it...don't even ask why. Went out and bought my second one, and it has been working since.

With my PS2, the first one was a used one...Gamestop had a deal to get a used system with two new games, or something like that. Bought it several months after launch. The system was a failure the minute I hooked it up...it would play DVD discs, but not CD discs. Or was it vice-versa? Anyway, brought it back, they had no more used ones, so I got a new one (that was back when I knew one of the guys that worked there, so he was cool with me). Been working since (knock on wood).

So, that being said, technically my Sony systems have been defect free. I mean, first PS1 was dropped, first PS2 was used and almost immediately returned. Same with my Nintendo systems...NES still works (with a few minor repairs to the 72-pin connector), my brother has my working SNES, GameCube works, and Wii works. So, I'm comfortable buying from these two companies.

Microsoft? I'll pass for now. Too many stories about 360's red-ringing and the original crapping out. I've known people who had problems with both consoles multiple times, but the same people never had many problems with their other consoles.

And no, I'm not a fanboy. If a console has good games, I'm there. I would just like to keep my consoles longer than 6 months-1 year before it needs to be repaired...preferably never having to get it repaired.

never had a playstation problem 1 or 2 or 3. never had a snes problem. everyone has the same NES problems(dirty pins, no hardware failure) but ive had 2 360's and my second one is about to die(which is why i got GTA4 for PS3), because every time i goto the dashboard when done playing a game the cd drive motor makes a very loud grinding noise. but ONLY when i goto the dash board from in game. not when i just power it off. and i will not buy another 360 for a long time when this one dies on me.
