Microsoft claims to have ironed out the fail from Xbox 360 photo

A recent survey conducted by Game Informer gave a fail rate of 54% to the Xbox 360. None of you seemed surprised by that number. We've all seen enough of the Red Ring of Death to know. I don't think Microsoft was surprised by it, either. But from what Microsoft man Aaron Greenberg says, you can rest assured that your newer Xbox 360 is going to last you. And those bad days? He says that he feels that "most of this is well behind us."

"I can tell you the consoles we're making today have lower-heat chips and better cooling, and we're seeing fantastic quality in those consoles today," Greenberg told GameSpot. "That said, I know people have had issues with systems which were bought earlier in the life cycle and that's part of the reason why we implemented our unprecedented three-year warranty for anyone who gets the three red-ring flashing light error or the E74 error."

I'd ask you, the gamer, if these improvements came a bit too late, but obviously they haven't. I don't know of anyone who stopped playing Xbox 360 because of these hardware failures. You know that Microsoft has learned from their errors. That next piece of hardware is going to be tested so hard that it's not even going to be funny.

I have to say, when I read the EGM unveiling the original Xbox, I laughed. Microsoft was saying 'this is going to lose money--we're simply trying to establish a user installed base.'

I was young at the time; I didn't understand. 4 Xbox 360s later, I do. They got the games, I don't care if I have to replace my console every few months, the games are so damn good.

My PS3 luckily has never crapped out on me once; maybe it's because I've played less than 5 games on it?

I'm still going to be cautious about the next Xbox's failure rates. I have a 360 and the Wii, but I want a Ps3 because at least it wont break down that easily. I still trust Nintendo and Sony more with their Hardware. Microsoft still has a lot to learn, despite what they said.

But the damn rrod is still happening religiously, apparently another quality increase is in order because nothings really changed, they have exceeded the billion dollars put aside to deal with this and its showing no signs of stopping, GI just had that survey with none to pleasing results, what got fixed?

P.S MS when everyone in the world is still dealing seeing red claiming its fix will only aggravate the problem.

Nice to know they're getting their act together, but its about 4 years too late. I'll stay with the PSWii thanks.

Don't they keep saying that they've fixed the problem? Wasn't the falcon chip supposed to be a fix? Which SKU is apparently red-ring proofed?

I don't think the average consumer will believe them unless they bring out a new unit that visibly looks different from the rest and says "new hardware" or something to visibly show it's a unit constructed to prevent red-ring. Even then... the stats will tell the real story.

I got the RRoD a couple of months ago, not fun at all. This was still in the period that they claimed it had "Calmed down." I've never had a single console crap out on me like my original Xbox (So many fucking disc-read errors) and my 360 have. Whenever a console broke, it was almost always my fault, but the MS consoles broke on their own. They're lucky I love their games so much. They really need to test the hell out of the next console, because the shit that happened to me is inexcusable.

I don't know that they will necessarily test the heck out of their next console. I certainly hope so, and there is a lot of money to be saved by not having 54% of your hardware need warranty work or replacement of some kind.

Still, Microsoft has become dominant pretty much everywhere except for Japan this generation. People's willingness to put up with the quality issues may not say as much to Microsoft as the cost of the console failure rates.

Personally, I hope that they do. I think that if nothing else, they will at least IMPROVE the situation on the next console, because they have to have lost profit from all of that warranty work and those replacements. Hopefully, they will even eliminate it. I guess only time will tell.

Oh MS, extending your warranty only works when you find and FIX the problem and don't replace broke with BROKE!

"You know that Microsoft has learned from their errors. That next piece of hardware is going to be tested so hard that it's not even going to be funny."

I hate to have to say this, but I think that's probably wrong. I'm on my 6th Elite, all 5 previous have failed under warranty from GAME so at least the replacement costs nothing and only takes a trip to the shop, but I thought the Elite was meant to fix half the problems? The new hardware will be given the same treatment as the old, I expect it will be rushed out before the other manufacturers release their next console in an attempt to get a head start in the market as was the case of the 360, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to find a similar amount of errors. However, I think that next-gen they won't add the red lights, because all that did is give the public a catchy name for whatever errors the new device has.

You only have to look at the Arcade price rise in Britain, the £40-a-year advert driven online service, the £60 Wi-Fi adapter, the cost of Games on Demand titles etc. To know that Microsoft have enough of a brand following to never need to care about consumer satisfaction again.

I bought a launch system and it finally red ringed after 4 years. If I had fallen into the three year warranty for the system, I would probably have sent mine in for a refurb or a new system. I will not buy a new 360. I lived in fear for two years and when the red ring finally came, it was totally as shitty as I expected it to be. If they could offer a lifetime warranty, it would be a different story.

My nintendo from 1986 still works great.

RRoD may be on the decline, but given the rise in reported E-74 errors, it's not beyond imagination to think that MS just updated the FW to report RRoD as a different error. They did it in the past with errors in windows 3.0-3.1. Would also explain why E-74 is cov'd by the extended warranties now.

I want a 360, but the little voice in the back of my head keeps reminding me of the RRoD and other such failures. I would rather deny myself the enjoyment of these games than purchase a product with a notorious history of self-destruction.

I'm still on my launch 360. But I'm not kidding myself; it's only a matter of time before it dies.

I live in perpetual fear of my 60gig BC PS3 dying though. I heard it's a hassle to get those fixed or replaced. But PS3s seem to be more durable, so only time will tell.

I recently took my Xbox apart and reapplied thermal paste (Arctic Cooling MX-2). I imagine as long as I take measures to counter the overheating RROD problems, I'll be good.

First day I had my 360 - Totally into Dead Rising, about 20 minutes....Power brick dies. Got a new one in 3 days. Fast forward to 1.5 years later, RROD. Crap. Sent it off, returned in a week. Fine. 1 month later...RROD. Back again in another week, OK. 2 months later...RROD. Hey! Free xbox live gold 1 month card! 2 weeks later - RROD. This time sent the console AND the power brick for replacement. No problems to this day (about a year later) but I still get anxious whenever I move the thing from one TV to another.

my first 360 was a 20gb and it never once got hit with the RROD, its disc tray instead broke down (refused to stay shut)... so i had that repaired by 360 pros, then i got hit with the error 74, 10 days after my 3 years was up... so i broke down and bought a 60gb console and have been smooth sailing since (knock on wood)

My 360 just RROD'd, but I'm not that bothered. I can do other things to pass time. Still annoying, but as long as it's fixed before ODST, then I'm fine.

Listening to you guys talk makes me unsure. The stupid 99 dollar wifi also seems like I'm not really saving any money.

Fuck it, you guys just saved me 400 bucks.

I've never seen the red ring of death because I don't buy MS products. The amount of hardware failure is staggering, but then I remember than MS is a software company built on the worst OS available.

I've had two issues in two years, and with each 'issue' the response time gets better. I got my last repair back in less than a week, that's German efficiency for you!

I'd rather have a 360 break than a PS3 break. When a PS3 gets the yellow LED or whatever all the data on the hard drive cannot be recovered and Sony replace it with a brand new unit. Back-up your saves!

@Tarvu - Seriously? Sony will give you a brand new PS3 if it bombs!? That's way better than getting a refurbished POS that will RR over and over again. I'm just going off of what swiftj posted above. I wouldn't know since I don't own a 360, nor have I ever even played a 360, ever.
I would honestly buy a 360 if I didn't have to buy all the extra crap (wifi, HDD, Live subscription). There are some sweet games like Lost Odyssey that I would kill to play. Oh well.

Tarvu, thats something you can fix by plugging in a external HDD or synking it with your PC.

Everything I put on my PS3 is from my PC so I always have a back up. You can backup games, I honestly don't know how lol, but I can re-download them again if my PS3 ever breaks down. [Did this when I swapped the 60g for 500gb! pure sw33tness.]

Personally, I think 54% is too low of an estimate, plus I'll still never buy one untill I see a complete redesign, as much as I would like to have one. I know probably 30 or so people that own one and EVERY SINGLE PERSON has gotten ringed or 74'd at least once.

I did stop playing (and buying) Xbox 360 because of 3 RRoD's. When Microsoft really releases a console that doesn't screw that easily, then I might be getting one, because I love Microsoft's exclusive games.
