Microsoft claims 8.1 attach rate, third party superiority photo

The industry peacock display continues unabashed, as Microsoft is now claiming a software attach rate of 8.1 titles. The Xbox 360 is also said to generate more revenue for third party publishers than the PS3 and Wii combined.

In the month of November, total software sales are said to have earned $408 million, with over $298 million being generated by third party sales. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft has been quick to lick its own balls in corporate delight.

"We've created the optimal line-up of experiences this holiday season for families seeking lasting entertainment value, particularly during rough economic times in the US and abroad," states MS' Don Mattrick. "We have the largest library of games, TV and movie content and the most expansive and rewarding social experiences. We're confident Xbox 360 will continue to drive record sales around the world this holiday and beyond."

The 360's latest success is all down to one thing -- LIPS. There is no other explanation.

Gibbo:

Actually, TRUE connoisseurs of Morph will remember him for his work with Tony Hart in such television shows as Hartbeat. I'm sure you children remember him best from Mark "I can't even keep alive" Speight's SMart, though, so keep on being BABIES!

Since I can't be the only person who had no Earthly idea what an 'attach rate' is, here's Wikipedia's explanation

sometimes i wonder about what they count as a title. Do downloadable small titles count the same as a full one. What about movie purchases/rentals how are they factored in. And most importantly are they simple counting games sold at retail or do they include games played per console (and we all know how easy it is to mod an 360).

@DemonEyes23: Damn fine intelligent question. Knowing Microsoft I don't doubt they did exactly that. On an even more devious note what if they just count game being redownloaded even. With their DRM issues of locking people out sometimes, who knows how much that bumped up the "attach rate".

Hate to post twice, but I just remembered this. If the Xbox 360 has such a high attach rate, then why does the statistics from the Publishers differ so much? Theres a number of times where the PS3 has been the leading console. Which is why the development has been increasing steadily for the PS3.

So I don't know if you can trust a number Xbox360 come up with.

Look at me dragging the average down. At least it's better than the Wii's 2 :P

Attach rate means squat when you have sold less than half you're competitor.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/06/AR2008110601561.html

Just counting Third Parties:

http://www.vgchartz.com/

Xbox 360: 5.2 x 24,860,000 = 129,272,000

PS3: 4.4 x = 17,880,000 = 78,672,000

Wii: 3.2 x 40,170,000 = 128,544,000

See? Xbox 360 barely sells more 3rd party software than Wii. If you combine 1st party sales, the Wii move more software than either 360 and PS3.

Attach Rate doesn't mean squat in hard numbers.

It's also disenginous to ignore 1st party sales. As if 360 and PS3 owners don't buy 1st party software.

(*Of, I'm assuming those numbers are correct, because maybe VGChartz hasn't been updated yet or the Washington Post Article might be inaccurate.)

Heh, I bought 8 games for the 360 just this year, along with 10 XBLA titles. I'm expecting that number is going to increase next year.

I'd imagine if that number would be any higher if it weren't for the RRODs, because I wouldn't imagine that they accounted for that
