From one side it looks nice, from the other.. it's easily forgettable :/ The most difficult thing to do, is simple but easily memorable logo.

The font looks terrible. It looks pretty generic and the "f" and "t" are joined for no reason.

Am I the only one who feels aspects of Windows 8 are intentionally designed to undermine PC gaming, and digital sellers like Steam in particular? Microsoft, I think, would much rather we were all gaming on their shitty little box so they could make licensing fees and force us to pay for Live. They seem to be in an ironic position where the success of gaming on their Windows platform is threatening their console platform.

Pretty much follows the idea that eventually all logos of the huge corporations will boil down to simple shapes. This is lazy but entirely functional as a logo.

It pains me to think how many thousands of dollars were spent to come up with this and conference calls with clueless executives to get their "feedback" on the logo tests.

Personally I hope Windows 8 is the last nail that causes developers to look to Linux. The only thing holding Linux back from widespread use is that it either lacks games or getting non native games to run under it is like pulling teeth.

Really the only thing Windows has going for it is games, they lose that edge and well .....

I quite like the logo. It's not EXCELLENT, but it's clean and simple.

@Scuffles: Wouldn't the fractured install base of Linux cause problems though? There are many distributions using many different libraries, types of packages etc. that I imagine it would be even more of a nightmare to ensure compatibility than it is now with Windows. I like Linux a lot, I use it every day for work, but I just don't think it's quite ready for use as a gaming platform (although it has lots of advantages due to its stability, the fact it's free etc.)

The old logo was a flag, like a racing flag. I don't know if I can call most logos good or bad ideas. This new one just looks like a simpler.

That looks really boring and lazy. I get that they were trying to make it look like the aesthetic of Windows 8, but they really couldn't come up with something more interesting than that? Their old logo probably would look fine with Windows 8 anyway.

The font for used for 'Microsoft' is either similar or the exact same as the font used for apple products.

Apple's logo is literally an apple. The Gap's logo is the company name in a blue box. This is hardly the crime against humanity a few of you are making it out to be. Its clean, simple and easy on the eyes - exactly how Microsoft is trying to reinvent themselves to better suit the new PC landscape.

Seriously? Steam is just as compatible on Windows 8 as it ever was. Having an App Store as an alternative changes almost nothing.

Yeah, it was time for a change. It used to be worst. I was originally a flying toaster with the windows logo popping out of the top.

I mean it looks to fit nice with Windows 8... and it's still the multicolored window, so nothing too crazy going on.

Oh, come on! This isn't their first logo change in 25 years! Don't you remember the older Windows' logos? It's still the same four-colored window. They just changed its style to match the new OS, like they already did in the past.

I think a lot of the issues stem from old concepts of linux. Hell I remember back in the day when I had search for sound drivers, probe my PCs PCI IRQ assignments, rewrite said drivers, compile then install. Now everything comes with a happy GUI is disturbingly user friendly and plug-n-play <3

True there are still some serious inconsistencies to tackle but the problem is that no one is really attempting to do so. Mainly because Developers have no real incentive.

I would liken the difference to taking the escalator vs the stairs. Win8 could just be that little push they need to get thinking about seriously taking the plunge and turning those stairs into a second elevator. Once they jump that hurdle it's the choice between taking the escalator and the escalator :)
