Microsoft bites the bullet: HD DVD no more photo

Ever since the (not so?) great mass defection of 2007-2008, it has been expected that Microsoft would at some point, abandon their own support of the HD DVD format. If you've taken a peek at Gamerscore since Saturday, you probably saw them announce just that:

"As a result of recent decisions made by Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers, Microsoft plans to withdraw from HD DVD.  Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market.  As we stated earlier, we do not believe this decision will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace. HD-DVD is one of the several ways we offer a high definition experience to consumers and we will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room, along with playback of the DVD movies they already own."

Not the best of news for those that hoped that the struggling format would finally take off and fly on its own, but there is one silver lining in this situation -- it has zero effect on the Xbox 360 and its games. The announcement should also put those bothersome rumors of yet another SKU with an internal HD DVD drive to rest. If only we could now get rid of the current scuttlebutt calling for the notably green console to transform into something a little more Blu-ray. When are people going to lose those silly notions that add-ons just don't cut it?

I always thought of it as prudent on MS's part not to shove HD DVD down our throats from the start. It was just too risky. As history now shows, it would appear that they made the right choice, and it looks like good old fashioned DVD may be here to stay for a while longer -- at least until Blu-ray players and the disks themselves start matching the price-point that the mainstream finds comfort in.

Just to give myself some credibility, I'd like to tell you first that I have a BS Degree in broadcasting, so I know what I'm talking about.

Q.How much compression can you put HD video through before you lose image quality??
A.All video compression is loss in image quality. In order to compress the size of an image, data must be discarded. (See:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossy_data_compression) No streaming video codec is currently lossless.

Q.Does Digital Cable allow for viewing of standard def or high def...
A.Both, America is currently going through the complete conversion to HD on all channels.

Q. ...and how fast does it stream??
A.http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=962

Everything you need to know about faux HD is at that link with data rates.

"I don't know wahat the big deal is. DVD is obliterating Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray has no chance in hell of beating it before DLC takes over. The war was two years too long, and the average joe just doesn't want it."

I'm sure this point has been made here before but I'll say it again. The broadband penetration in the US is NOT NOT NOT where it needs to be to allow digital distribution to take hold. And working for AT&T I can tell you that from personal experience. Is it getting better? You bet. As it stands right now anywhere between 60-80% of people that want broadband from us won't be able to get it just because of where they are geographically. And that's just regular broadband speeds, do you know the speed requirement that would be required to download 700mb or more file in a reasonable amount of time? Its at least double but more likely quadruple the speeds that are out there now to get people interested in digital distribution.

Also, the storage needed to download movies and have a whole library of movies like I have dvds in my house now is staggering, and the storage capability is not there yet to do that, and won't be for some time.

Lastly, a lot of people including myself like to have a hard copy of my movie on a physical disk. What would I do if the hard drive I had a lot of movies on crashed? Download them all over again over a couple of days? F that. While digital distribution will be around in the future it is so far off most people don't realize it and think it will be here in 2-5 years, take it from me it won't. I see different people everyday that don't own a computer.

I'm glad they made it an optional device rather than force us to use a certain disc format.

" It was just too risky. As history now shows, it would appear that they made the right choice,"

Actually i think we will never turly know if they made the right choice. I mean, i think Sony forocing PS3 buyers to get a Blu-ray player probably helpped Blu-ray alot... i mean, every PS3 owner was a potential/future Blu-ray... it helped push blu-ray...

In theory, had the 360 had built in HDDVD, it would have done the same thing for blu-ray... the major difference though, the 360 was a lot more popular, sold a lot more, and had a full year head start... The more HDDVD players that are owned by consumers, the more HDDVD movies are likely to be bought... The sale comparisions between blu-ray and HDDVD may have been drastically different and studios would see this... HDDVD might have still been in the fight, and may have actually been enough push to win it for HDDVD... ofcourse it would have been devestating should HDDVD loose, and hence why MS was not willing to take the risk that Sony was willing to do... if both companies take the risk, one will loose and one will win... but if only one company takes the risk, that company is VERY likely to win, and the other gains nothing but looses nothings

but that is a what-if scenerio, one we will never know how it would have truly work out

good answer brainderailment, that is some very good feedback. @ Corak, so very true, it is not even funny how many internal and external HDD have crashed on me. I have learned the hardway to always back things up on DVD, I can't wait till 50gig BRD come out so I can store all my shit on one or two disks.

And BLu Ray mp3 & Car players, how many songs can you fit in them will be super sexy....

Now something no one has noticed... Toshiba kinda switch console support... Hmmm you say

I really don't see the BluRay in PS3 as shoving it down anyone's throats. I see it as a logical progression of a game-medium. 360 is the ONLY console to ever come out using the same size medium as a previously come and gone console. I see that as shoving multiple disks down your throat. I don't know why nobody was saying that about DVD in the ps2 and xbox. It was an unestablished format at the launch of the PS2.

personally.. i don't buy enough movies for the difference between an upscaled DVD and a BluRay/HD-DVD to be worth the $20(or more) price difference

brainderailment: I agree with everything you've said, however I'd like to point out that the 360 wasn't the the only system to use the same medium of a previous console. The Nintendo 64 did it too. ;p

It's not necessarily that they were right in not shoving HD-DVD down our throats. I have to imagine that if the 360 came with HD-DVD packed in, the outcome of the format war could have been very different.

It's pretty sad that the film industry is not supporting any if not all ways of providing HD movies. The film industry also owe it to the dvd format for earning them billions.. it was the natural progression to continue the dvd format. To be bought out by sony to be the only source that provides a high definition media disc (blue ray ) is pathetic. Talk about progress... we've just gone backwards and I believe it's lost them a lot of sales and a kick in the teeth to the whole idea of hdtv. After betamax and mini disc... Blue ray...hmmm it doesnt even sound right. Well, I've never been the one for downloading movies... but thats what I'll do in the future if I want hd movies. I Thought the hd era was here and now... you can blame the film industry and sony for knocking us back 5 years or more. If all be said... it's a sad day for hd.
