Microsoft and Nintendo: Get a room, guys photo

The love fest between Microsoft’s Peter Moore and Nintendo (in particular, the Wii) continues.

Taking a break from drawing hearts on his Super Mario Bros. notebook and nervously calling Iwata just to hear his voice and hang up, Moore has revealed to Game Informer that he, like, totally wants to get to third base with the Wii. Translation: he really respects Nintendo’s new console and what the company is doing to make the Wii so easily accessible to the mainstream.

He likes Ninty’s strategy so much, in fact, that he plans on taking the Xbox 360 down a similar path in late 2007.

Although his comments lack any real details, Moore did reveal that there will be some surprising announcements in the next couple of months.

Hit the jump for "Moore" (ha ha ... ugh).

When asked about Microsoft appealing to non-hardcore gamers:

Moore: It’s a great question. You’ll be hearing a lot more about it in the next month or two. We have always had the focus on what we called—I don’t know whether I’ve sat down and talked about the first two holiday campaigns with you, but when we started building the strategy back in 2003, early 2004, we realized that the first 15 months, knowing what our ship date was even back then, would be critical to continue to recapture what’s called the hardcore gamer, and we want to make sure that we continue to have that sort of person on our side, because they’re very important to the overall ecosystem.

Then, coming into this holiday, we realized we needed to build an approachability story that was going to be important as we were attracting a different consumer in holiday 2007 and on to 2008. This is even before the Wii—the Wii was still the Revolution, and nobody knew anything about it. We recognized that both our strengths with Xbox became our Achilles’ heel with Xbox 360 in that we had built a very legitimate gaming device that had been taken to heart by the hardcore guys who when Microsoft announced the Xbox were very skeptical about our ability to deliver real gaming experiences on the console. I think we put all of that to rest very, very effectively and repositioned the brand. We went from black to white—it’s brighter and more optimistic brand. We’ve done an incredible amount of work with the third-party development community to make sure we’re well positioned to have all of the right content, the E and T content that’s going to be important in the out years in our platform. From a first-party point of view, it’s not just about E-rated games, it’s going to be about the experience that, quite frankly, Nintendo has done a tremendous job in capturing, in bringing back fun—if you will—to the gaming platforms. But we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeve as well to be able to do that. It’s not something that we’re going to be shy about, and it’s not something that we’re not painfully aware of that needs to be changed by this holiday. That has been the strategy all along, and we’ll be making some more announcements in the coming month or two. I think you’ll see how serious we are about that.

What do you think? Are you excited about Microsoft’s proposed change in direction? Or will you kill yourself the minute the Xbox 360 controller sports motion sensing capabilities?

Step one to getting more people to buy the 360?

Lower the price.

Master Chief in SSBB? Mario on marketplace? Who knows. I just hope they don't pull a bleeding edge maneuver like a motion sensitive controller.

However, if the Wii and the 360 could talk to each other...

As a huge fan of both the Wii and 360, I'd kill myself if Microsoft tried to jump on the motion sensing bandwagon. Just make the best fucking online experience ever. Make the dashboard REALLY fast so I don't have to spend 15 seconds during intense rounds to chat with a friend. Make unique games! There's still a shitload of un-tested game genres that would be great on traditional consoles like the 360 and the PS3. Go after that kind of unique stuff, don't copy Nintendo!

BAH!

They should ignore those casual gaming bitches and focus on their strengths. The reason the Wii appeals to the casual gamer market is because the Wii Remote is so easy for a non-gamer to pick up and play. A motion sensing 360 controller would not appeal at all to casual gamers it's too big and intimidating with all of it's shiny buttons. They'd have more luck marketing casual games on Vista and Windows Live Arcade. Motion sensing with any classic 2-handed controller like Sixaxis is going to just be a lame gimmick.

Also Kokomo.

I don't really care if the 360 controller supports motion-sensing, I'll just keep my non-motion sensing one and ignore the new one. I will be disappointed if that's their bright fucking idea. Let's not follow in Sony's footsteps with the whole "You know what our console needs? No, not good games; it needs motion-sensing! Now THAT's next-gen!" No. Stupid. Please.

X360 does not need a new controller.

just more games like godhand, okami...
i wonder if Seeds will work on the X360.
and what is Treasure up to lately?
Capcom..any new fighters? SF 3.4? Marvel vs Capcom 3?anything?

anyways, i'd die if a new Mario Kart would be released
for Xbox Live with Banjo & Kazooie...
but i dont think thats happening...
i can dream can't I?

Microsoft's strategy:

- We need to kill Sony, let's praise the Wii.

- We need to kill Nintendo, let's steal the Wii.

In other words, MS wants to bring the X360 even closer to a PC.
Well, guess what, they'll never be able to convince the casual crowd that they actually need a $400 console to play casual games, when they already can play all those non-demanding casual games on their PCs.
Most of the truly hardcore gamers and most of the truly casual gamers will never be interested in console hardware.

Viva Pinata was a casual game and I loved it. Give me a Harvest Moon-esque game for the Xbox 360 and I'll be a happy guy. 'Hardcore' games are fine and all, but sometimes I just want to sit back and relax and play something without stress and that doesn't require much brainpower or attention. I could care less about motion sensing controls, but casual games that are not limited to Live Arcade I'm all in favor for.

At least Microsoft is willing to give props to Nintendo for what it does best. Sony just hates everybody, their console crushes all the competition apparently.

There is no amount of talk that will get Mario on any system besides Nintendo and I think I would cry if Master Chief had any sort of appearance in Smash Bros.

yeah, ms has been quietly targeting the casual audience since launch.

why else would hexen hd be the pack in game.

expect more of that. i don't think they're gonna go the motion sensing route. just more accessible games to get the box in your living room, so you buy thier iptv service.

further speculation, browser capabilities added. quietly adding media center pc functionality to thier gaming device, rather than creating a multimedia device with gaming capabilities.

Whoa, whoa. Who said anything about a motion sensing controller? You guys go on a tangent and start rumors way to easy. All Moore aid was that Nintendo has captivated their target audience with easy fun games, and MS wants to have some games like that. Like the new Banjo Kazooie game, thats exactly what that strategy he's talking about; it even is the right time frame.
