Microsoft admits the NXE can break 360 audio outputs, working on fix photo

Oh Microsoft. Microsoft, Microsoft, Microsoft. After a somewhat successful launch of its New Xbox Experience, you would think that for once, we had escaped widespread reports of the usual bullsh*t linked to the Xbox 360. Think again.

Microsoft has confirmed that a number of Xbox 360s have had their audio output broken by the NXE, rendering certain HDMI-connected consoles completely mute. Apparently, there is a compatibility issue with the NXE's updated HDCP handshake which essentially means that an HDMI connection cannot be established.

"While the vast majority of our users worldwide are enjoying the New Xbox Experience with no problems, we are aware that a handful of Xbox LIVE users are experiencing audio issues, and are diligently monitoring this issue and working towards a solution," Microsoft confessed in a statement. "We appreciate our members' enthusiasm and patience, and apologize for any inconveniences."

I guess we can't be too hard on them, really. It wouldn't be the Xbox 360 without something completely f*cking up for somebody.

"While the vast majority of our users worldwide are enjoying ________ with no problems..."

I've noticed they always start it out with that. What good is it to those having problems knowing that the "vast majority" isn't sharing their pain?

My last console died last month due to video issues, and not the RRoD. My console has HDMI, though I haven't been lucky enough to try it out yet, I just use AV on my old tv....should I be worried about losing audio or not?

A wag of the finger at Microsoft.

I had been using an HDMI cable when I downloaded NXE and my screen went crazy but I never noticed an audio problem since my TV was muted anyways. But yea, I had to switch to a component cable and I'd been meaning to ask someone if there had been any other problems with using HDMI. Well I guess this answers my question...

I thought that went too smoothly! Other than breaking some people's hardware and causing more millions in hardware warranty repairs for yourself, good job MS!

Boy, thank god the 360 is so reliable that a glitch like this won't ruin a stellar track record.

Ever since I d/led NXE I haven't been able to access the Marketplace. Actually, the only tabs I have on mine are the Friends and My Xbox ones.

This really isn't that bad. I mean, I haven't even heard of it and NXE has been out for a while now. For a huge update, I'd say it went pretty well. Besides, Sony can't even move from firmware version 2.40 to 2.41 without all hell breaking loose, so I'm not going to be to hard on MS.

Happened to me recently while i was playing Gears. sound just cut out. had to turn off the tv, turn it on and scroll through the hdmi inputs once to get it to work again.
Also the video screwed up borking all my HDMI inputs and i had to unplug the tv for 5 mins to drain the capacitors/clear the hdmi memory. unplug the HDMI and replug it. then it worked again.

I had the same video problem on PS3 when Sony did the 2.5 update. Only, i couldn't get it to work by unplugging the tv/HDMI and recycling it again. I had to wait for the 2.51 to be released, update it on an old CRT then move it back to the HDTV. finally it worked again.

Hmmm. I only have two issues with NXE. The marketplace is extremely slow to load, and streaming music from my Sony Ericsson W960i takes forever. I used to be able to select Play All, but that seems like it would take a day or two to load since the update. Oh well, I still love you.

This is nothing new, really. And not just from Microsoft. Remember the awesome 2.40 PS3 firmware that was bricking consoles left and right? And let's not even get into the game developers for both systems that release broken-ass games just to patch them up later...

The message here should be that everyone... EVERYONE needs to start testing thier shit thoroughly before rushing it out the door.

I just came in here to make sure we point out that Sony made a mistake once in order to avert the attention away from the hilarious truths that Jim has proclaimed.

Been having this problem with my 360, but I can get the sound back by playing and exiting out of a video file. Hope a real fix comes real soon.

Admitting to it was a good start but I would ahve been more impressed had MS been completely honest and said that NXE is simply breaking piles of 360's causing RROD.

Anyhow, with any luck my 360 coffin should be here today, ready for it's death march back to MS.

So glad I updated.

You'd think a company like Microsoft would actually completely check NXE for things like this before releasing it into the wild, i'm sure they have enough bloody testers to do a fairly decent job. :/

I updated to the NXE thinking "awesome, slick new interface" then after the console reset my hdmi port wouldn't work full stop. Now i'll have to send it off to be repaired, no doubt be screwed over by MS's shitty marketplace rules. Yay MS!

The new 3d interface sucks and It has bugs.

I Hate this new dashboard and the HDMI sound on xbox sucked way before this so I changed to optical toslink.

Not like it worked good anyway nobody would notice if sound cuts out.

I have a hard time blaming this on MS. I view this as a copy protection issue with HDCP and HDMI outputs. Once again only legitimate users are getting screwed because of a copy protection scheme. I can't imagine it is easy for MS to ensure every possible combination of HDCP enabled devices work smoothly with the XBox. This HDCP/HDMI issues seems to be a recurring issue in the electronics world.
