Microsoft: 360 lineup is about quality, not quantity photo

Gamers may have noticed lately that Microsoft's Xbox 360 lineup is a bit of a dustbowl, with very little on the horizon outside of third-party games. The 'Soft, however, isn't too bothered about that, claiming it's not the size of the library that counts, it's the quality.

"Creating core IP, as many first-and third-parties have seen over the years, isn't an easy thing," claimed corporate VP Phil Spencer. "I went through the process of creating Gears with Epic and I know the sweat, time, and effort hat went into it. I also worked on things like Alan Wake, Too Human, Crackdown, and stuff that didn't hit the same level of success, but had an equal amount of sweat equity and heart go into getting created."

Spencer said that the 360's lineup is about "quality and impact, not number of releases a year."

Here's the thing though, Microsoft. You need a quantity of something before anything can have any quality. Let's see some games worth a shit, please. No, not your on-rails Fable crap.

That argument Microsoft is making is insane. The PS3 had a ton of first party games in 2011, and for what I rememmber, all of them were 80 to 90 on metacritic. Microsoft just making excuses for not having a good lineup of games.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Microsoft can give us at E3.

Either way, this looks to be a Sony and Nintendo year for me; I'm going crazy on the Vita and the 3DS, and I'll get the Wii-U when the first first-party game hits. If it's something like Metroid-Wii-U or Mario Galaxy 3 Wii-U, I'm going apeshit.

By which I mean it's just a pile of bullshit PR nonsense.

They captured the market share already, as CoD sales figures indicate, so why invest in exclusives that possible won't sell as well as CoD and GoW, right 'Soft?

Microsoft had plenty of quality 360 exclusives last year. It's just that it was all Kinect bullshit.

they (M$) don't give two shits about software at this late stage in the 360's life-cycle. especially since the 360 itself continues to sell like gangbusters. Halo 4 will be their last triple-A game. period.

stop calling Gears of War GoW, its confusing. GoW could just as well be God of War even if it is clearly not in this contects it can still be confusing.

They are going to release a Halo, some XBLA games and whore some DLC from the next COD and call it a day. They are jumping ship for the next-box as they did with their first console.

Umm, other than Halo 4, what "quality" title does Microsoft plan on releasing this year, exactly?

Part of me wishes Kinect would have crashed and burned so MS would stop pumping all their damn money into it.

I'm still going with lots of secret shit as of yet to be revealed, or they are pulling a Nintendo and starting to ignore the system while they prepare for the next one (as their system still sells and they have insane 3rd party support behind)

Definitely seems like they're pretty much done with focusing on 360 first-party games (aside from Kinect!) for good. They probably already have their biggest devs working on 720 games at this point.

I agree with Jim completely on this one. In order to HAVE quality, you must have a quantity of SOMETHING to receive that quality.

I'd judge after E3, not to mention we're winding down the cycle here so they're bound to be putting resources into the NextBox.

But i'm sure we'll have some 1st party rare stuff after E3 but it'll probably be Kinect focus'd :/ MS should buy up Double Fine & give them money and not fuck them over like every studio they've bought besides Bungie.

I finally got myself a 360 and there's not one upcoming exclusive game I am interested in. I wish they would let devs make their own choices on Kinect... because Kinect Fable looks like a giant fail to me so far. :(

Fable has let me down ever since I bought 2. I like em...a bit...but they aren't anything new or exciting like Molyneaux would have you believe. Fable 1 was awesome and had so much potential to develop, and then it was squandered in hype about well...not much at all.

the stupidest thing about Microsoft's lack of... well... anything besides Kinect games and Gears of Halo lately, is that they charged out of the gate with tonnes of promising IP (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and even Infinite Undiscovery never saw their true potential), but MS cut anything that didn't initially sell 5 trillion copies.

i learned my lesson, though. i'll be buying a Japanese console next gen.

We get it Kinect is a thing. Even 2010 had a few good exclusives (Conviction, Alan Wake) but last year was a drought and they need to get their shit together cause Sony's trouncing them in variety. It's sad cause Microsoft was offering a ton of unique content 2 years ago.

Sony released a crap ton of Exclusives over the years while Microsoft has only released very few. Every single one of Sony's first party offerings were great games. How come Sony can manage to release so many quality exclusives, while Microsoft says they can't because quality is too important???

That doesn't make much sense to me considering. Killzone 3, Infamous 2, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, 2 God of War HD collections, Team Ico Collection, Sly Cooper Collection, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Funny thing is I wanted to write a review of the console generation as a whole but I never had xbl, and felt like a bit of a hypocrite for getting ready to grade the console without trying its (allegedly) greatest feature.

So I swallowed my pride and bought a year of xbl off amazon for 40 bucks ( I wasn't paying 60 I swallowed my pride not my sanity) and this happens.

even looking at exclusives i missed the past 5 years the pickings are still slim. They truly relied on established brands and popularity to sell this thing, its probably why i never felt i was missing much.

And now that the casual gamer is the industry's new darling the people that brought them here have really been hung out to dry.

Better hope the third parties have your interest in mind or switch over to a ps3, because if you can't do either of the above, your pretty screwed.

@Konnery Fable: The Lost Chapters was one of my favorite Xbox games, Fable 2 I tossed aside about halfway through and never went back. The potential the series had in the first game was completely overlooked in the second. I didn't try the third.

Black Nexus. You've always come off as a huge Sony fanboy in almost every post. Without a balanced opinion it's hard to take you seriously.

By the by around 2009 Microsoft was laughing as far as exclusive content was concerned. They've unfortunately dropped the ball within the last year.

You left out: And what of Sony’s recent efforts? ”They’ve done a great job at selling old franchises with HD remakes,” Spencer joked.

I'd rather have a good quality exclusive than just more exclusives. PS3's exclusives, as a whole are merely 'OK'. So to claim that its better because it has more exclusives is just idiotic fanboy drivel.

Just because Microsoft's priorities have shifted towards Kinect, doesn't change the fact that more[PS3 exclusives] does not always mean better.

Dear MS,

Since Gears and Forza the only reason I turn on my 360 is Skyrim. That's all you gave me last year. This year nothing. I hope you pull out something at e3, I truly do. If not, well skyrim and my backlog of arcade titles will keep me busy, but ill mostly be on my ps3 and 3ds. Oops wait, forgot I grabbed fear 3 and el shaddai. You don't credit for those though. Make me want kinect or give me some damn games.

Sincerely,
My Money.

Microsoft always has better XBLA exclusives now than retail exclusives. The only big(hardcore) Microsoft title this year that I can pick up at a Best Buy will probably be Halo 4. Hopefully the smaller downloadable games pick up the slack.

I think Sony said this a couple years ago and Microsoft mocked them for it. And I think Nintendo said something similar last year, since 2011 only had Zelda for them. I guess since Microsoft lost the exclusivity on Mass Effect and focused so hard on the Kinect, they really failed to produce much of worth recently. I guess I'm glad I own both consoles and didn't bet on just one of them.

It used to be a somewhat decent debate comparing the line-ups of Sony vs MS consoles, often coming down to personal preference (more often coming down to crazy fanboyism) but now it's like WTF has MS been thinking?? They actually think the Netflix people and Kinect casual players should get priority... the whole reason the system is in a home to begin with it because of core gamers. I'd bet that the rest of the 360's generation is completely lacking of any real exclusives.

@ Rammstein to be fair just cause you may not enjoy them doesn't mean they aren't quality. Opinions dawg! I hear they all sell well too.

While Sony may have varied exclusives Microsoft is known for it's excellent online service. The minute Microsoft attempts to give it's users a solid Single Player game everyone pirates the fuck out of it.

Microsoft needs to either a) utilize the studios they own more efficiently (looking at you, Rare) or b) buy some new studios. Clearly they know talent when they see it (looking at you, Twisted Pixel), so I wonder: why don't they invest in some new studios and secure some more exclusives?

It's truly baffling to me.

Microsoft's line up of exclusive content is lackluster, but it's a bit underrated, only because there are some really cool games coming out for xbla. Microsoft is lucky that there is a ton of great third party games coming out this year because on the retail side of things Microsoft is empty.

While I enjoyed Uncharted 2(the first was better), it wasn't enough to OMFG DAY ONE Uncharted 3.. and what, Heavy Rain? Nonono, I'm laughing *with* you not at you! What else...can't think of anything else.

As he also said, I'd sooner put Skyward Sword as best exclusive of the year than anything Sony did last year.

As he also, also said, where are all these best-selling exclusives in the top 10?

More isn't better, people! Didn't they teach that in first grade?

I am pretty surprised at how bare the 360's exclusive line up is looking. If anything, I'm guessing Microsoft is going to be spending a lot of money to secure exclusive content for multiplat releases this year.

I see myself playing Dark Souls on my 360 for a long time so the lack of news doesn't bother me yet.
