Microsoft <3's Rare, defends studio against Moore's criticism photo

Former Microsoft man Peter Moore has been a busy boy of late, and his various comments on a variety of industry-related subjects have fired up the Internet quite vigorously. We discussed one such comment yesterday, when the Cheshire Cat suggested that Rare's talents were not particularly relevant to the modern day games business, at least while he was working with them.

Microsoft, however, has naturally defended its acquisition, and Microsoft Games Studios boss Phil Spencer praised Rare's skills in a rebuttal of Moore's accusations. Here's what he had to say:

Rare is a great studio that continuously delivers high-quality, award-winning titles for the Xbox platform and will continue to do so in the future. Rare plays a strategic role in delivering games and platform experiences that will help the Xbox achieve our long-term strategy of expanding the customer base to a mainstream audience.

The studio’s current work that includes the recent release of another critically acclaimed installment in the Viva Piñata series, the reinvention of a genre and a franchise with the November release of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts as well as the avatar system they’re delivering as part of the new Xbox experience not only is indicative of the value they deliver to our business but proof positive to our partners and the industry at large of our commitment to this strategy and the platform’s continued success.

Looks like young Peter touched a nerve there. What do you think? Was Rare a good investment, and is it one that will pay off in the future? Is the current generation passing Rare by, or can the British developer keep pace with the industry? When will I get a banana tree seed from Seedos so I can get a Cinnamonkey and SOME1  PLZ SEND ME A DRAGONACHE PLZ OMG!

Rare, Microsoft and Nintendo need to stop bitching, have a threesome and make me a REAL Perfect Dark 64 sequel.

That or re-release the 64 version on xbla.

...sigh, wishful thinking.

Yeah dude. I liked it better when Rare was working for Nintendo. Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark... all amazing. When Rare switched to MS their games started to lose quality. I really want an appropriate sequel to Perfect Dark.

RARE made Goldeneye.. therefore RARE will always be one of the best in the industry in my book.

Actually, Ex members of RARE (now Free Radical) created GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and Time Splitter.

What made Rare Rare is no longer there.

See what I did there?

LOL. Good pun Muon. That's exactly my point. Considering that the two brother who started RARE left the company. RARE is now just a brand who needs to start new IPs because key people from famed IPs they had are no longer there.

I feel as through Rare's titles have served Microsoft extremely well, Maybe Perfect Dark was cashing in on previous success, but Viva Pinata was a good game, While i do agree that some of the glitter of rare is gone, they do have the IP's to do some good stuff, Banjo should be good, hopefully they will do a new Conker's game.

Rare was 50 times better when it wasn't part of Microsoft. All those original games that came out for nintendo, PS, all that creative juice was juiced out the day MS acquired them.

They might make some semi good games for the xbox, but Rare is a company that should be free to create original titles for all systems.

@klubjunkee

The developers who made an amazing shooter are no longer there? YES!

Now I don't have to worry as much about Banjo Kazooie 3.

Rare isn't exactly a bad studio...it's actually doing. ok, not necessarily in a financial success but critically they're doing better than a lot of dudes. Problem is that they need something new and worthwhile outside Viva Pinata, cos let's face it, it's not exactly the pinnacle of modern gaming.

Viva Pinata was a great game, and I'm looking forward to what they do with Banjo-Kazooie. But if they fail on the latter...that's really the end of any hope for the studio, at least in my mind.

Most of the developers at Rare are new...however they have indeed put out some solid titles for the 360. They had some hiccups during the first few years of the acquisition, which is expected from a company that loses its major developers. Now they can use some of the support from the new banjo, the old banjo (XBLA), Viva Pinata and the avatars to progress the system more.

or they could just drop the ball and the next group of games will suck...either way I think Moore has just been a little bit of a chatty Cathy recently.

I'm sure BK3 will be great but it won't attract casual gamers to the 360 like MS envisioned when they grabbed RARE. Nor will BK3 be a must have title for current 360 owners. It'll become a sleeper hit like Viva Pinata. A guilty pleasure for 360 owners.

For some reason everything seems to think Peter Moore is talking about the present. I'm sure he's talking about the 5 years of absolute worthlessness Rare provided MS immediately after the purchase.

Rare was a waste of money. They were awesome on the 64, but nothing they have done since has come close. It doesn't help that most of their talent left to form Free Radical. If they make another JFG then I will be happy, but PD0 and Kameo were average at best, and they were in development for over five years.

PD0 and Kameo were meh, but Viva Pinata was great, and how can anyone blame them for making kid friendly games, they're now a 1st party Microsoft developer, Microsoft is looking to widen the reach of its console. Hopefully the new Banjo game is good.
