Michael Bay to make FPS -- RevAnthony begins sobbing photo

Yes, apparently it's true. The L.A. Times did a feature on Digital Domain, which is a special effects company headed up by the Armageddon-tastic director Michael Bay. Yes, Mr. lips-on-Transformers Bay. So, the article mentions this early on:

Bay's first-person shooter game is part of a larger strategy to transform Digital Domain Inc., where he is now co-chairman, from one of Hollywood's elite special-effects houses into a full-blown production studio, capitalizing on the convergence between games and feature films.

Yep, Michael Bay is making a first person shooter. I can guarantee that the game, instead of having too many cinematics, will have too many explosions. Closing a door behind you: explosions. Using a keycard: explosions. Reloading ammo: explosions. Setting off thermonuclear device: no explosion, because you have to rewire the damned thing.

What's more, Digital Domain will be buying up some game studios.

Mindful of that trend, Digital Domain is building its own games unit and plans to acquire one or more game firms this year. The games would mostly be tied to Digital Domain's visual-effects projects, appealing to a range of styles and genres.

Look out, Rockstar. I admit that this isn't necessarily a bad thing, what with the announcement of Spielberg's Wii game and all, but let's just say that I'm apprehensive. The FPS is a genre that certainly gears itself towards action and visuals over a well developed plot -- and hell, I'm sure Bay's game will be better than Red Steel.

[Thanks a ton for this, Nathan]

Looking at DMV's avatar: explosions. Reading his article: explosions. Scrolling back up and noticing boobs in the picture: pants explosion.

Also, the camera guy might even be worse than me, is he seriously hiding behind a pine tree to take the picture? Or did the tree lean over and put up some bunny ears all on its own?

As long as the game consists of many one lines like "We ride together, we die together" I give it a B.

It can't be much stranger than Twilight Princess. Anything you kill explodes...when you slice it with a sword. Not sure what that means in terms of the chemical make-up of people in the Zelda universe, but I'm pretty sure natural deaths are bad for the environment.

Another FPS game can't hurt! I hope Uwe Boll does an FPS so mid-game it can cut to scenes from a movie for no reason.

why are you hesitant about the prospects of him being responsible for a FPS. there are hardly any games more mindless than a FPS where all you're doing is SHOOTING things. his movies are all about shooting shit up and blowing shit apart. it's a match made in heaven.

Will I need DirectX 10 for prettier explosions?

I'm sure he'd make a better game than movie, so I'm not worried.

Agreed, after crap like Bad Boys II, and Pearl Harbor there's no where to go but UP!

i think that Bay gets a bad rap, sure, his movies aren't art, but they tend to be fun explosion-laden blast-fests. i thought that "the island" was awesome, and I'm prepared, going in, for Transformers to be nothing but robots beating the bolts out of eachother while things blow up around them. (i think i might be disapointed if there's an actual plot!) needless to say, his directing ability will probably make for some great first person shooting action.

Why, God? WHY? FPS games have been replicating Bay's character-light explosion-heavy style for years -- we don't even NEED the sonofabitch creating these games himself.

you have to admit though a good story in any video game is rare - they stand out in the pack and bad stories and poor dialogue in a video game is usually the norm- especially in an FPS- so really- how bad can bay be at it? not particularly I would think-
