MGS4 PS3 bundle has everything you need, including backwards compatibility photo

I've always hated the phrase "everything but the kitchen sink." What the hell does that mean, anyway? I have to use it here, though. The recently announced Metal Gear Solid 4 PlayStation 3 bundle does include everything but the kitchen sink, and that includes backwards compatibility for your PS2 game collection.

You already knew that the bundle contained MGS4 and an 80GB PS3. Also, DualShock 3? Check. Not bad for $499, right? But a PlayStation Blog reader wanted a bit more value in his bundle, according to MCV. The reader hit the comments section of the PlayStation Blog post with a backwards compatibility question, and he received this response:

Yes, similar to the Motorstorm bundle, the new MGS4 bundle features an 80GB PS3 with some PS2 backwards compatibility.

As far as hardware goes, that's just about everything you could ask for in a PS3 bundle. Nice job, Sony. Make sure you have your online component going strong by then, please.

Oh, and I'm feeling pretty good about the June 12th date CTZ mentioned yesterday. VideoGame Forums has scans of the Japanese PlayStation magazine, and the date is all up in those pages. If Kojima and Konami hold up to their simultaneous worldwide release promise, we'll have this game in our hands in a few short months.

[Thanks, JR]

This is great! 2 out of the 3 of my PS3 needs have been fulfilled (Valkyrie of the Battlefield and BC. I still await Disgaea 3), so the time for a PS3 is soon.

I could give less of a shit about MGS4. When the time comes, I'll sell it here at a reduced rate, because I love you guys in the most manly way possible.

Was there actually any doubt that there would be BC? It's an 80gb... I doubt they'd make a special model and gimp it just for this.

Konami, I beg you, please release MGS 4 on the 360 as well. I really don't want to have to buy a PS3. :(

Fuck. Thanks 40 gig ps3, because i didnt need to play my ps3 games anyway. But hey, how about 12 more SKU's while you're at it, Sony? Make em better and slimmer ad sexier and with more jam-packed goodness. I'll be crying and masturbating in the corner.

Y'know, if I hadn't just become a poor student I'd get that.

Oh well, I suppose my 360 will have to do.

@Qalamari: It’s software-based, so not all PS2 games will work on it. But most of them will. As others have commented, Sony has a search page on its website where you can type in games to see if they’ll work. The only SKUs with hardware-based BC were the launch models (20 GB & 60 GB).

hahahahahahaa. MGS in a box. love it. that package deal is amazing. that and the god of war one (www.consolepatrol.com) shows that Sony is definitely serious in trying to sell as many of their consoles. hopefully they get the games going too.

Bring it to the UK (for a price comparable to this US one) and I'm sold. Money on the table.

@RitualNet: Unfortunately, the bundle is for North America only (confirmed by the PlayStation.Blog; see comment #11).

Sony didn't remove the EE chips to cut costs....... I really would like to buy a new PS3, particularly this new bundle, but I find it almost unforgivable that they removed the PS2 BC hardware from PS3s just because they wanted people to play more PS3 games.
Un-fucking-forgivable.

@Qalamari
The limited software BC that may play most games, but will still experience slowwwwww-down. Which is a major major bummer.

Also, everytime I see that bit of information, I want to punch that fucking bastard in the face.

Jack Tretton being the fucking bastard I want to punch in the face for removing EE chips from PS3s for no legitimate reason.
Just clarifying my post, as it seemed like I could have been talking about any of you posters (when I wasn't =D)!

What most people don't understand about this being a great deal is, the recent victory of blu-ray many people will buy the PS3 for $400 or $500 which is what a blu-ray player costs anyways, a PS3 is blu-ray + games + online community, with this bundle it will definitely be a win, and with an 80gb HD that owns any other Blu-ray player in the market.

@ Arttemis: Jack Tretton pisses me the fuck off, too. He's actually the reason I haven't bought a PS3 yet. Every interview I read with him just makes me more and more angry. I actually like everything the PS3 has to offer, and I'm sure I'll give in and buy one this year, probably this SKU. But yeah, that douche definitely needs a stab in the testicles.

'with some PS2 backwards compatibility.'

'some'?

I could really use some disambiguation right about now.... =)

Simple solution for the "some backwards compatability" issue.....JUST KEEP YOUR FRIGGIN PS2!!!! Is it really that big of a deal? Not for me considering how my PS2 will still be working when my grandkids are in their 40's!!! I'm not even married yet!! I could care less about the backwards compatability. Sure it's nice, but who's going to be playing crappy PS2 games when we will have all of the awesome next gen stuff to melt our brains with?

I think this is living proof that they're not letting go of the 80GB SKU, they're just wrapping it up with a different bundle. I can see them going like they did with the slim PSP, with different bundles having different colors and different games packed with it.
Guarantee you this won't be the only 80GB bundle w/ DS3 we'll see down the line. GTA4, God of War 3, Little Big Planet, Final Fantasy XIII... they'll all more than likely get a bundle. Currently I can see them coming out with bundles for R&C Future, Uncharted, DMC4, or Burnout Paradise.

@Big_A:

The cost of a PS3 would be lessened if people sell their PS2's. I was going to when I bought my PS3, but the potential buyer has dragged ass in regards to financing the purchase.
