I've always hated the phrase "everything but the kitchen sink." What the hell does that mean, anyway? I have to use it here, though. The recently announced Metal Gear Solid 4 PlayStation 3 bundle does include everything but the kitchen sink, and that includes backwards compatibility for your PS2 game collection.
You already knew that the bundle contained MGS4 and an 80GB PS3. Also, DualShock 3? Check. Not bad for $499, right? But a PlayStation Blog reader wanted a bit more value in his bundle, according to MCV. The reader hit the comments section of the PlayStation Blog post with a backwards compatibility question, and he received this response:
Yes, similar to the Motorstorm bundle, the new MGS4 bundle features an 80GB PS3 with some PS2 backwards compatibility.
As far as hardware goes, that's just about everything you could ask for in a PS3 bundle. Nice job, Sony. Make sure you have your online component going strong by then, please.
Oh, and I'm feeling pretty good about the June 12th date CTZ mentioned yesterday. VideoGame Forums has scans of the Japanese PlayStation magazine, and the date is all up in those pages. If Kojima and Konami hold up to their simultaneous worldwide release promise, we'll have this game in our hands in a few short months.
[Thanks, JR]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Where do I preorder, and here are my credit card details.
But ONLY if Sony don't shit on Europe this time.
How can you negatively spin this great news? Be happy with what they're doing.
And "will it be enough"? I think it will be seeing as how just about everyone says "I'll buy a PS3 when MGS4 comes out". Now the game's bundled, comes with DS3, and BC is still there (not that it REALLY matters), those people will MORE than happily buy the system
Step 2: You put your snake in the box
Step 3: You open the box
Also, Video Cognito - you'd think so, but check the responses. I think most of us, including myself, glazed over the possibility.
I mean that might make sense, stimulus spending could make for a big quarter for sony.
Even so, I won't be among the buyers. None of the PS3 "exclusives" like MGS4 (cough) really thrill me that much. Plus, I'm already having trouble finding the time and money to enjoy my 360, Wii, and DS.
umm...i don't think its just sony...as i recall, ms racked up a lot of dead boxes and has had many different skus and different processors and until recently were talking about an hd-dvd bundle as well.
@ harrmonica-
Not true. First, you can't hold it against MS that there were *RUMORS* regarding an HD-DVD bundle, that were never confirmed by the company in any way, unless I'm gravely mistaken. Secondly, different processors? Who cares? If Sony changed processing chips or other internal components, no one would even notice. The only reason it made news with MS is because it may or may not have helped fix the RRoD problem, which had become a big story.
No matter which way you slice it, having a feature like backwards compatibility not be standard across all skus is unnecessarily confusing and well, lame.
And while I'm not gay, or female, I could probably deal with that inside me, too.
As long as it doesn't skimp on the reacharound.
: )
This is really what Sony should have had at launch... that would have been epic.
I want this so badly especially with the attractive price. but why is it not FULLY backward compatible?! WHYYY!?
Nice move from sony for the BC ... keep going on !
Now this really makes me wish I had waited to buy a ps3...damn.
As long as I can still play Abe's Oddysee, Bushido Blade, and the first Guilty Gear, BC is all good.
thanks for the info. I just checked Sony's site and there is a search function to see which games work with the PS3 and which do not and you are right, most of the games I own still work with the system, save for Brave Fencer Musashi but I still have my PS2 that it will work on. it seems that the software upgrades solve a lot of issues with the popular PS2 games such as MGS3 Snake Eater which had some video issues that have now been resolved.
I can't wait for June. I just hope that I can get one of these. I'd rather not take a day off of work to go wait outside a store. but I will do what is necessary to get this
Also, In case people would like to find more in detail info on BC for all systems, Sony replied to my email with links and all info for it.
