MGS4 needs to sell OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAND! photo

An article on Reuters suggest that Metal Gear Solid 4 will be the "last of the great exclusives" and talks about the death of third party exclusivity as well the high costs that factor into their demise. Of note was a comment from MGS4 assistant producer Ryan Payton who stated that Guns of the Patriots would need to sell one million copies in the first day alone if the high development costs are to be justified.

In the first day, on the PlayStation 3, is a lofty goal, and proof positive that third party exclusivity just isn't worth it anymore. Will MGS4 manage such a feat? Well, without saying it's impossible, let us just say that it's about as likely as Darth Vader being Luke Skywalker's father and the creator of C3-PO while discovering that The Force is actually made up of hundreds of tiny germ people.

G4's Adam Sessler agrees that Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't going to be a modern day miracle. "No, Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't the killer app," Sessler states in the article.  "People who already own a PS3 will likely get it. But it doesn't have that kind of broad-based appeal." I adore Metal Gear Solid, and I'm inclined to nod along with him. Metal Gear is not a system-shifter. Never has been, never will be. A sales spike is possible, but Solid Snake will never be as mainstream as Mario.

Now, what were we saying about MGS4 on the 360?

@TheStripe =- look at the amount of hardware you're getting with a $400 purchase of a ps3 in comparison to the $200 put into a ps2 SIX years ago. an updated media format(blu-ray), hd gaming, a nice blu-ray player, a 40gb hardrive, online capable out of the box(w/wifi), wireless bluetooth controllers, no freaking memorycards. the ps2 had none of that. its all in how you measure your dollar's worth. twice the price for more than twice the machine seems like a good value.

i never liked MGS not on the ps1 or ps2, weird controls and crappy camera and quite boring, GTA was more a system seller than MGS, i bought a ps2 just to play GTA vice city

Is that supposed to be 1 million sold on day 1, worldwide? Is that such a lofty goal for a big name franchise?

I don't pay attention to sales numbers that much, but 1 million on day 1, worldwide should be a piece of cake for any big franchise no?

I've been impressed with the game, whenever I see it in action it looks even better than the last time. However, it doesn't look SO good that I can justify buying a PS3 to play it on.

yes, it is. Of course I didn't buy a PS3 solely for MGS4, I got it for Uncharted, HS, R&C, GT5, GOW, and anything else that those companies come up with. If you bought a PS3 just for MGS, you are a loser.

Just change the name of the game from Metal Gear Solid to Metal Gear Pirate. INSTANT WIN!

You totally took a joke from Robot Chicken there - the part about the Star Wars. Nothing irks me more than plagiarized comedy. I hope you take out that sentence and admit to your foul play.

Of course nobody gives a rat's ass about whether the game will actually be as good as we all expect it to be. How about we wait for some reviews and word of mouth?

Adam Sessler's an idiot. But I can see MGS4 easily selling shitloads of copies day 1. Granted stores stay on their asses with keeping it stocked, get alot, and just constantly bug everyone to also get a PS3 along with it.

Hell if I don't have a PS3 by the time it hits (which is most likely a hell no unless PS3 gets the weight loss PS2 had and a little lower.) I'll still buy MGS4. Just cause if I don't have it, my friend will most likely have it. Bam.

it's possible to support sony's next gen crap without even supporting sony the full way.

For the purist, I understand how much someone would desire to have an exclusive for the PS3. But the bottom line is that the PS3 is under performing in the marketplace and Konami has a huge financial stake in this with releasing MGS4 as an exclusive. MSG4 has already gone thru 2 major delays and is currently slated to release late Q2 of 2008 (who knows what Konami's fiscal year is -- Q2 could be late March or late July for them). Now I'm sure Konami has a contractual agreement to release this game only for the PS3, but Konami should seriously look into breaking that portion of the contract for their own sake. And I wouldn't be surprised that the true reason behind these delays was to allow a development team to create a 360 port.

For the people saying this is not a system shifter, two words: Dynasty Warriors. I just saw went back and saw that the new one sold 188,000 in the first week in Japan. It's hard to know its impact because PS3's prices dropped that week, but hardware sales did spike. Also, the week Blazing Angels 2 dropped in Japan, 360 beat PS3 in hardware sales. Isn't that niche?
Remember that there's still tons of PS2 owners with no next-gen system and GTA4 and Little Big Planet will be out or coming soon (not to mention some other good games as well as older games like Drake's being cheaper at that point). I think tons of people will buy the PS3 not JUST for MGS4, but as an excuse to finally make the plunge.

Lastly, if Sengoku Musou 69 or whatever can sell 188,000 in a week in Japan alone with the user base before the 40 GB and price drop, why couldn't MGS4 sell that much or more on day one in Japan? That'd already be about 20% just from Japan. Whoever said MGS4 will plateau at 600K after a few months is nuts. Resistance was just on the top selling charts again after the price drop and it had already sold over 1,000,000 for a new IP.

Maybe if Sony help Konami by paying Gaming sites to super hype this ala Halo 3. It will sell a good amount of it's target. With MGO being free with MGS4, it won't really be a rip off, with MGO being more of a new game (or feeling more like one) rather than an online component, sales wont be a massive problem. MPO being free might be what kills off an Xbox version. Kojima has talked about Dual-layer Blu-Ray, this makes me think this could possibly be 2 Blu ray game. That's obviously quite a few DVD's. So they'd either have to compress alot to facilitate, or spend potentially more in production cost. That's on top of development for converting to 360 hardware. I cant see a 360 version happening. If 360 was fitted with a HD-Drive as standard, i think it would already be well into development

Aurain beat me too it but how in the heck are you going to fit a double layer blu-ray disc (or possibly several blu-ray discs) worth of material on a 360? Not to mention the fact that developers cant code for the 360 with the assumption that a hard drive is available which means nothing can be cached on the hard disk and everything has to spin from the optical drive. If MGS4 is ever to appear on a 360 then Konami is going to have to clear some gigantic technical hurdles.

MGS4 will not sell 1 million in the first 24 hours. Period. End of story. If you want to argue with me, I'll write your name down and call you out when it doesn't happen. Feel free to do the same, but you'll be wrong.

@hagar: Okami was/is great, but as of right now--based on what's advertised in mags/online/through stores--PS3 has the best 08. You talk about the irrelelvance of sales for "fifa ox's": I was talking exclusives, which relates to this article. If you're not interested in this game, don't post.
