MGS4 helps PS3 close in on Wii in Japan, but no waggle-slayer photo

Reports are suggesting that Sony may be catching up with Nintendo in Japan, as the sales gap between the PS3 and the Wii closes. The Wii still outsold the PlayStation 3 by 1.7 to 1, even though this was the month that Metal Gear Solid 4 released.

It seems that MGS4 provided a boost (one that may prove temporary), but was certainly no Wii slayer. Not even a game with a perfect Famitsu score and the pedigree of Kojima can prove to be enough of a system seller to knock the Wii off the top spot.

The Wii has topped Japanese hardware sales for the past seven months, and it seems that nobody can stop the march of the little white waggle box. Sony might be closing the gap, but a gap still remains and it looks like it'll take some incredible feats to close it for good.

You'd think everyone already owned one over there.

I sure the 360 version of MGS4 will help to topple Wii sales worldwide. And cure cancer. And prevent male-patterned baldness.

Can a real game get cut some slack with/without the Wii around?

Here's what I don't understand: How exactly is it "catching up" if it just fell further behind?

The Wii outsold the PS3 June, increasing the gap between the two consoles install bases. How is that "catching up?"

A little misleading. The gap widened even further, the only thing the PS3 managed to do was lose by less this month than previous months.

It's like as if someone was running 10mph faster than you and now they're only running 5mph faster than you. They're still running away from you and increasing the distance, just not as quickly as before.

killias2: Yes, indeed it is known that Jim Sterling is a PS3 fanboy. Why he even gave MGS4 11/10...

It's blatantly obvious that Jim is being paid by Sony to write this article.

100% truth.

Sony gave me money to pay GI.biz to make the story that I based my story on. CONFIRMED!

Good to hear, Jim. I appreciate honesty. If Gamespot was honest about when and where they accepted cash, maybe I'd forgive them.

The caption made me chuckle!

I never expected the PS3 to ever reach the Wii with MGS4, and I doubt it ever will in the future.

"Monthly sales gap is closing. Don't be retards."

The monthly sales gap was smaller than usual right after the biggest release of the PS3's lifespan. I don't know if I'll take that as evidence for a general trend, but we shall see.

*Wii outsells 360, PS3, PS2, + PSP combined* = "Wii is a fad, it won't last"

*PS3 has a rare great month, while Wii has a rare down month* = "SONY IS RECLAIMING THEIR THRONE!"

Gotta love it. (No, not talking about you Jim.)

Just goes to show you that consumers prefer affordable innovation over expensive, stale, rehashed garbage.

I can't wait for 2nd Generation Wii games to start coming out that totally obliterate everything on the PC, 360 and PS3.

When Wii games come out that totally slay Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, GTA 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4 in quality and innovation, then the rich elites will finally admit that the Wii has won.

Remember, just like the PS2 and PS1 before it, the Wii will dominate with the best 1st and 3rd party software.

right now the "3rd party" developers are afraid of not sellin enough. hence bloombox (exploding jenga blocks) that might change, that can change, but will it? don't think for a second that anyone has won or lost a race until its over. there is that one story, called the tortoise ( ps3 ) and the hair ( wii ), think on that for a second.

@ Qraze: Your analogy assumes that the "hare" in this case is going to suddenly stop selling consoles for the next year or so to let everyone else catch up. Since that isn't likely to happen unless Nintendo starts including poisonous spiders in Wii boxes, the hare is going to stay on pace and continue increasing its lead for the foreseeable future.
