MGS: Rising 'levels the playing field' for exclusivity photo

Microsoft's Shane Kim has a lot to be happy about, following a relatively successful E3 showing. One of the biggest Xbox-flavored shockers this year was arguably the appearance of Hideo Kojima, who announced a whole new Metal Gear Solid experience for the Xbox 360. For Kim, this announcement has 'leveled the playing field' for third party exclusives.

"I still think exclusive content is really important. First of all, in games, we've said for a long time that a key part of our strategy with Xbox 360 was a level third-party playing field. Now we've effectively done that with Metal Gear Solid [Rising] coming to the Xbox 360," boasts Kim. "The economics are such that third parties also have to support multiple platforms, and you can't ignore Xbox 360. It's the second leading platform.

"It's too much of a business-driver to just be focused on a single platform if you're not a first party. So, it's up to the first parties to deliver the bulk of the exclusive game content. Now, we're having success with third parties because we can still get exclusive downloadable content, because of the service we've built with Live and the business we've been able to generate for third-party publishers there."

It's certainly a coup for Microsoft to finally crack the Metal Gear case, even if it's not MGS4. Luckily, Sony still has Ragdoll Kung Fu. Nobody's taking that feather from the PS3's cap!

Actually exclusivity IS the gaming industry. If all games were available to all consoles they're would only be one console and one handheld and if that happened they could sell their crap for whatever price they liked. It wouldn't be an industry it would be a bunch of overpriced crap for one place not to mention that there wouldn't be enough choice between the consoles. I want a wii because I love the series and cell shading, I'll want a PS3 for the graphics and I would want an Xbox as a sorta middle ground between casual and hardcore. If something comes out for another system we either need to buy that system or go without because it's a system that works fine and has been around since the beggining

Oh dear, I sense another fanboy bonanza.

Sony still has - or will in 2010 - more than enough other titles to make me get one but yeah still a good blow for Microsoft by taking away another brand you used to associate with Playstation

Exclusives are a blessed sin. Good side: They can churn out some very decent games with developers not having to worry about making/porting multiple versions. Bad side: It encourages fanboyism and bias, as well as being into Nazism.

Open to interpret (if a little fanboyish): If there were no exclusives, PS3 would be in some deep, deep...doo doo.

Ooops, very good point. I completely forgot about that, funnily enough it was a timed exclusive on Xbox, Substance or something. Think I already had Sons of Liberty on PS2 so that's my excuse for forgetting!

I don't really see how it levels it up.

360 is getting Metal Gear, true, But it's a Spin-off with no Solid Snake which I have a suspicion is going to be a DMC-eque Slash em up.

Main series holds alot more power in the eyes of the fan, Ask any die-hard Final Fantasy fan, such as my self. I don't really care about not getting Crystal Chronicles on my PS2. If FF12 was Gamecube only, I'd have gone mental. If it was a Bonafide MGS5, It would be level.

If I liked MGS, I'd care.

Exclusivity is a good thing though. PS3 needs them more than ever, but with its exclusives it is becoming more and more of an attractive system. That and a fucking price-cut, but exclusives seems to be the chosen strategy. Still, saying that, the best exclusive this generation for me, has been Gears. The whole 'cover-system' mechanic has made third person shooters (on consoles) a hell of a lot more playable. And fun.

still doesn't address why xbox owners should like Raiden after MGS2. Hopefully they'll be able to reveal this as my non-ps3 owning mentality on Raiden is he was in the only mediocre MGS thus making this a bit of a harder sell.
Mornelithe's Avatar

I like MGS, and even I don't care. LoL. Anyone surprised by MGS moving away from PS3 exclusivity, is simply fooling themselves. However, Rising, hardly qualifies as the 360 gaining anything but a shadow of the original series. Simply put, Kojima's working on Peacewalker for the PSP, the game he referred to as the 'true' MGS5. Whereas, on Rising, he's neither lead designer or director. I mean, I guess it's a victory for Xbox owners?? But really...they're just going to get a watered down version of the storyline and no Snake.

I don't think this levels the playing field very much at all.

Xbox owners get a game that isn't even considered a "true sequel" to an MGS title, and an MGS title that Kojima doesn't even have any involvement in. Hardly leveling the field.

@manasteel88 - Have you not seen him in MGS4? He's wearing a god damned cyborg mother fucking ninja outfit! Remember what Grey Fox did in MGS1's cutscenes? Raiden does that and 10x more in MGS4.

If this game can deliver anywhere near the level of intense action from any of the clips with cyborg ninjas, it doesn't matter what series it's from, it'll be a badass game. After the finality of MGS4 (but really just its atrocious dialog and script), the further removed from the main story, the better IMO.

I think this is one they need to not talk about. The more they brag about having something too, the more they sound like they don't have anything of their own. We know they do and so do they, but nobody needs a 360 (or for that matter even a console) to play this game. You don't get Sony going on and on about how Dead Rising 2 isn't a 360 exclusive. They announced it, it was kind of surprising, the end.

If I were them, I would focus more on Splinter Cell being new and different both from MGS and from the older games in its series and preferably do it without plugging "exclusive to xbox 360" every other sentence because it makes the speaker look like an enormous tool unless it's coupled with a release date and given way at the end.

Funny how you had to take that jab with the last sentence. It couldn't have been MGS: Peace Walker, Uncharted 2, MAG, God of War III, Agent, Heavy Rain, or any other exlcusive coming down the pipeline.

Or better yet, you could have just kept for snide editorial comment out of this supposed news story.

Shouldn't they wait to see how the spin off does before bragging, this is going to be held to the standards of what many consider one of the greatest games this gen and if there's so much as 1 flaw it will be blamed on the fact that its multi plat.

Not to mention that sony(and the entire gaming industryfor that matter) won't sit still either and will continually raise the bar, that and kojima seems to express little intrest in this project, your basically banking on the fact that the multi plat standard will hold up for two years(in an industry that can totally about face in two months, maybe less), there kinda setting themselves up to eat their words.

Prudence MS, it does ya good.

Well shit, this was made to be such a big deal over the past year (And maybe even before that), "MGS4 coming to 360 this, MGS4 coming to 360 that." This was a long time coming, so I don't blame them for gloating, even though I agree that Xbox owners definitely have had an MGS game before, and are getting another with the same lead character. It's not the real MGS game, but I don't think many owners care (Myself included). And besides, they are focusing on their exclusives. Did you guys already forget that Splinter Cell had an entire game play demo shown?

@ SantaClaus89

It was a joke dude, you don't have to take it so seriously. And besides, Agent isn't going to be exclusive...

Sooo I assume you work at rockstar and have detailed info on how they plan on porting it, because I work at ubisoft and have detailed info on how splinter cell is coming to the ps3 because of their past actions.

See what I did there, I'm all for proving a point and won't spite anyone for it, but if your gonna make a claim like that you should bring evidence and not opinions and interpritations on past actions because that's how these flame wars get started and the fanboy word gets slung around.

As of now you can't say the agent won't be exclusive just as I can't say splinter cell won't be exclusive because neither of us are in the know.
