MGS: Peace Walker on PSP so children can play it photo

Oh Hideo Kojima, you shady old bastard, you! The Metal Gear Solid creator has explained why the latest game in his stealth series, Peace Walker, is on the PlayStation Portable, despite looking epic enough to deserve a place on the PS3. According to Kojima, it's so that kids can play it!

"With the PS3, you've got a whole range of middle and high school kids who can't play your game because their parents don't let them play video games at home," explains the mad professor. "Those kids can whine at their parents all day about how the game's anti-war and anti-nukes, but they'll just respond 'Well, you're still killing people with guns, aren't you?' and brush it off.

"I wanted to go the extra mile for gamers in that sort of situation. That was one of the reasons I chose the PSP."

So there you go. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is on the PSP so that the kids can play it (and also learn his important anti-nuke message). I'd really like to see Kojima explain that one to The Daily Mail.

He's still crazy, but I've got to agree with him. I like this.

Hahahahaha, Shady old bastard. Love it.

Should have just brought it to 360! Then MILLIONS of CHILDREN could play it.

That doesn't make a lick of sense. So their parents say no to killing folks on their big TVs, but it's okay to do so on a smaller screen? Huh? So is his reasoning just so "kids" can hide that they're playing a "mature" game from their folks? I don't get it.

I love Kojima's games, but c'mon...

I've been telling him to GTFO for a while now. It never does any good.

Kojima may have just shot himself in the foot there.

Yeah....that makes....total..sense.

What parents won't let their kid play video games at home but buys them a PSP? Maybe he's talking specifically about Japanese families. I don't know...I just wish this was a PSN game so I could play it ;_;

GTFO? Are you saying that the 360's main demographic isn't 12-18 year olds?
or are you saying that the ant-360 opinion is not welcome here?

On topic, I don't understand what the shady old bastard is on about with this. Surely parents that are strikt about PS3 gaming are strikt about PSP gaming too??

Oh, that crazy Kojima. He's at it again. What a card.

I don't care though. If it means I can give my PSP a little love, then I'm all for it.

Pretty sure it's 12-30 year olds. You'd be surprised if you ever actually played online on a 360 how there are a considerable amount of adults on there. Most Gears 2 games and Left 4 Dead games I play have maybe one kid and the rest are 18+ rational people.
It's just Halo that's saturated with children, not the entire system. And, honestly, I doubt the Halo demographic would be the kind to play the MGS series.

"Nielsen Media Research tried to prove the point by tracking usage data by age and gender for all three of the home consoles. Over the course of October to December, 2008, console activity in all National TV Panel homes was measured, and the results are interesting if not very predictable.

Nintendo Wii

The Wii, which is by far the bestselling home console of this generation, appeals mainly to males aged between six and 11, and females aged between 25 and 34. Women over the age of 35 use the Wii much more than either the PS3 or Xbox 360. Which would kind of explain how Wii Fit continues to top the all-format charts month after month.

Microsoft Xbox 360

The Xbox 360, currently sitting in a very comfortable second place in terms of sales, appeals mainly to males aged between 12 and 17, and females aged between 25 and 34. This seems like a bizarre mix but the younger age range for boys could explain the level of petty whining and douchebaggery on display over Xbox Live.

Sony PS3

The PS3 generally seems to appeal to the older generation, with no young kids anywhere in the mix. This could just be because the Sony machine is so damn expensive that kids are still saving up their pocket money for one. Both males and females saw the largest usage amongst the 18 to 24 age range. This is considered the hardcore range where gamers play more games and for longer than any other age range."

WHAT THE FUCK KOJIMA?!

Why the hell would a person tell kids to not listen to their parents? Also this guy is a big hypocrite. "Hey kids! Nukes are BAD, and so is war! But killing thousands of mooks to prove a preachy message is okay!" He says that the game is anti-war even though the point of the game is to KILL YOUR WAY TO VICTORY!

Seriously, what the fuck.

That's nice; is that peer reviewed? Maybe a link? Also if its an "offical" report, I'm sure "douchebaggery on display over Xbox Live" isn't scientifically sound. How did they gather this data? What's the sample size? Copying and pasting something from PS3.com doesn't count as a solid article.
Also, way to turn a PS3 article into an Xbox bashing thread. You really can't stop talking about that system you hate so much, can you? It even overtakes you in threads about your precious Sony. Suppressed desire to own one, maybe?

Well, technically Snake's not supposed to kill anyone and go in all stealth like... But considering how hard that is, killing your way to victory IS the usual way through.

Point taken though.

News flash! Kids like video games! I don't know about the rest of you, but I was once a kid who loved video games, too. OMG kids love movies, DVD/Blu-Ray players must suck as well!!

I don't blame anyone who doesn't want a PS3/360/Wii, but at least stick to coherent reasons.
Anyway, Peace Walker looks epic, I'm pretty excited for both new MG games. I don't buy his logic, though. If I wasn't going to buy violent games for my daughter on 360/PS3/wii, then I wouldn't buy her one on PSP either. The new generation of parents actually grew up playing games, and we actually know what we're getting when we buy games for our kids.

When I was a kid my parents used to regulate our gaming based on how much time we spent in front of the tv, I can only imagine this hasn't changed a ton with modern parents. Games on portables are more accessible, you can play them anywhere and are not restricted to (in kid's case) where your parents watch over you. Then again, I'm only inferring.

Yeah and pointing out the hypocrisy in an anti-war game that has you killing people, is about as smart as criticizing any media that has an anti-content message BUT STILL HAS THAT CONTENT GRR IT MAKES ME MAD. It's not fucking Gears of War mate, hoo hah let's kill us some Locusts, oh my war is certainly hell etc.

I think what he's trying to is that, parents are more likely to overlook violent games on a handheld, than on a home console. The principle behind this being that violent games are not as prominent on handhelds, and parents can see more violence on a tv. I love your stuff Kojima, but you have to learn how

@SexualChocolate

I'm not the biggest fan of the 360, but I don't bash on it like you do, and I make a fool myself doing so.

all you have to say to your parents is 'look, you are rewarded for doing the opposite of killing, non-lethal actions grant extra content, and taking out people silently is a better method then going rambo'
and they'll be like 'show me!'
and you well, and you'll blow their mind with mgs4 or mgs3, either works
and they'll be like OMG STAY AT HOME AND PLAY MOAR!

Riiiiiiight. What better way to spread an anti-nuke message than with a series that has a story so convoluted, its creator said even he's not sure what's going on in it?

"So Psycho Mantis represents the totalitarian leader and the marble busts he's throwing at me is government spending?"

Should've put it on Wii. Only kids' games go on the wii. Therefore, MGS would be kiddie by definition.

It makes sense. He is implying that the kids would buy it themselves because parents don't have a lot of control over what happens outside the home.

Seems like a true enough statement to me.

@Chronic Logic:

Clearly you've never played a MG game--you don't have to kill a single enemy for any of the games, save for MGS3 & 4's ending (though 4 is more a matter of self-defense). The core idea of the game was AVOIDING a fight and accomplishing the mission.

I think RedQueensAce might be onto something. If you read between the lines a bit, I think what he REALLY wants is to tap into that Monster Hunter money. To do so, Kojima had to put it on something that EVERYONE in Japan currently has or will get (a PSP).

Also, I would think that retroactively destroying precious dinosaurs would be worse than taking out terrorists but apparently PARENTS KNOW BETTER.

Actually, I'm 16, and this is exactly why I'm excited for the game. My parents won't let me play games like this, but they can't see what I'm playing on my psp or ds, so I can play whatever I want on them (which means, I play handhelds a lot more than consoles).

I still think that being afraid that videogame violence will damage kids is ridiculous. It's like saying that "playing guns" with your friends, or "killing" your GI Joes, will lead to some sort of emotional trauma.

Even at a very early age, kids can tell that videogame characters aren't real, even in HD. The most realistic videogame characters today still look like they are made out of plastic.

Before, I was actually a little irritated that Peace Walker wasn't coming to home consoles, but now that I know why it's not, I'm all for it.
