Mexican PS3 to cost mucho dinero photo

¡Dios Mio! Even with Sony's recently announced price drop, many still feel that $500 is too much to spend on a video game console. The blogosphere is rife with complaints on Sony's price point for their flagship system, but now it seems that gamers from United States have no room to complain when compared to their Latin American neighbors.

Mexican gamers will finally be able to purchase their territory-specific PS3 for the price of 9,999 Mexican Pesos, which comes out to $910 USD and some change. They will recieve the new 80gb model, and it will be packed with the blah-worthy Forumla One Championship Edition. Wealthy Latino gamers can begin ordering their systems on Wednesday via the Mexican SonyStyle web page. The system is expected to launch on August 11th.

The official Mexican PlayStation blog states that the first sixty customers ordering the PS3 from SonyStyle will recieve a special edition package that includes a camera, knapsack, and a clock. Hopefully these extras will help make up for the $400+ extra cost - but that needs to be one nice knapsack! It is also mentioned that SonyStyle is offering 12 months financing without interest with certain pay types. Its good to know that they realize that their price point is so high that it requires financing.

We would like to wish our Latin American readers the best of luck on saving their pesos, but if you're reading this page, we recommend that you check out any of the fine American internet stores selling PS3s at almost half the cost.

I never thought the day would come where you'd require a co-signer to buy a game console.

If not selling a single console in Mexico is Sony's intention, they will definitely achieve that goal.

in israel it's the equivelant of $1300... but i mean it really ranges from $1100 to $1600 depending on the value of the dollar on any given day... and that's just for the standard 60 GB with only one controller... no extra games.

but then again, every single israeli i know (except for a save few) is such a fucking piece of shit that they deserve such a price point.

Why fucking bother? Nobody's going to buy the PS3 for $900 dollars in MEXICO.
I've been to Mexico. I'll just say that I didn't see diamonds and pearls flowing in the streets.

Attention mexicans. I live in South Texas. Contact me and I will deliver PS3's to you for the low price of $700. It's a steal to be sure, since all you have to do is not come into the US illegally and obtain one.

This plan of action is conservative approved.

You guys do know that Mexico is one of the top video-game playing countries on the world, right?
(Side Note: Arcades there are alive and well due to this type of bullshit; bad for consoles, good for mastering KoF combo'ing)
Anyhoo, after Japan, teh U.S. and Canada, Mexico is next up in spending for games.
...Of course, it need not necessarily be spending for an official source...

I always thought that the people who could afford a PS3 in Mexico in the first place would just come up to the States for shopping and buy one here.

That's what I'd do.

That sucks.

Here in Brazil, the PS3 costs about US$1450.
The problem isn't the price itself
It's all the taxes the SOBs from the government impose on eletronics like that.

You dudes, it SUCKS to live down here if you're a geek.

the system actually launched at 13,000 pesos (1200 + USD)

and yes, mexico is one of the top videogame buying countries

also, there's this thing called VISA. you get it to go to the US. not everyone swims

I have a friend in Venezuela who has a PS3 from America (was my neighbor) and he says it sucks to have one down there. Nobody else has one and the internet is slow as hell.

I know Mexico is damn serious about games (I've seen the arcades, holy shit) but they're kind of the butt of all jokes in America. Thank Carlos Mencia for that.

It would be helpful to know what the 360 and Wii cost there so that we could gain a little perspective.

But this is Sony. I'm half expecting them to announce a new version of the PS3 that doesn't play video games for $25 more by Wednesday.

Is Sony encouraging grey market activities? Seriously, why make mexico pay a premium when the same product can be had for hundreds less right over the border. I just don't get it anymore. I think sony is being run by a room of drunk monkeys.

It's no wonder why the 360 and WII are kicking Sony's ass so hard.

Well, we do get kind of raped with videogames prices in mexico... The only console and games that sell to the comparable amount + taxes is the 360...

But wii is only about 50-60 dollars less expensive than the 360 premium. And games for the 360 are cheaper than nintendo and sony ones for the most part.

But all sony stuff is kind of overpriced right here... when you can buy almost any Apple product cheaper than a sony one, you've got some serious raping going one.

I never thought I would take Sony's side, but I don't think it's their fault. It seems like everything getting imported into any country (broad brush) south of the US has heavy taxes levied upon it. Blame the Mex government.

I second the part of Brazil having high import taxes especially on tech. When we have an employee come up and visit us in Detroit he takes back all kinds of gear---ipods, dram, you name it. For a piece of memory that costs us 50 bucks here it costs 900 there, for example.

Don't blame Sony...

And here we have all the fucking white people talking shit. Im not from Mexico but damn americans are some stupid uninformed dipshits. Except a couple but is really full of fucking retarded people...real intelligent to have Bush as president... twice... Looks like when the world is taking over your country the only thing remaining is to hate on people.

Nearly all the latinos I know speak both english and spanish and have some truly impressive education. Maybe Mexico have a poor girl selling candy but I prefer buying some candy and feel ok that to watch planes crashing on buildings, kids shooting at schools, Rodney King racism, lots of crackheads and a way of thinking that is just cemented on hollow pride.

Well, is good to have all those Israeli, Cubans, Dominicans, Mexicans, Salvadorians, Peruvians, Puertoricans, Colombians, Argentinians and all kinds of hispanics and asian invading this country. If you are afraid to lose your job, well, study harder and have more certificates to your name... oh! y aprendan a hablar español monton de gilipollas, masca miembros, comemierdas, pendejos, lame escrotos, sopla culos.

This needs more latin gamers posts...
In colombia, my xbox 360 costed $654, but I made the investment because I could easily hack it and play backups, instead of spending $100 per game.
The PS3 is at $955, and the wii $550. Most of the latin gamers make the obvious choice and just play pirated games.
Of course, at that gargantuan price, and almost no good games, the PS3 is not a good sale.

Latin gamers have a hard time...

yup...piracy helps

Wii games bought: 2
Wii games owned: 27

360 isn't that overpriced cause there's actually a Microsoft branch in mexico (im guessing it's supposed to be for all of Latin America)

dont get why it's overpriced...doesnt that North America (continent, people. US =/= america) apply to electronics?

anyway, obshaky is right. all latin american countries have a higher standard of education than US. dunno about canada. plus, most schools teach english and spanish so you learn the most widely spread language and english (more countries' official language is spanish)

also...on mexico:

Xbox 360 Premium: $499
PS3: $1,300 (until the date announced in the article)
Wii: $400 - $500 depending on where you buy it
Xbox/PS3/Wii modding: $50 =]
