Research group Americas News Intelligence thinks that the Mexican games market might be worth $1 billion by the end of the decade. ¡Dios Mio!
According to Gamasutra, the Miami-based group says that total revenues (not counting the pirated stuff) for the year are up over 30 percent over last year, coming in at $670 million by the end of this year. They expect numbers to raise 22.2 percent to $818 million in 2008.
"The results of our research flies in the face of the image of Mexico as an insignificant consumer market plagued with piracy," said Phung Pham, lead analyst on the report. "There is a booming gamer population and despite problems with piracy, a substantial level of legitimate business. And video game publishers are finally starting to take note."
The report also stresses the market importance of "YUGS" -- young, unmaryied gamers. The unattractive term (or YUGGIES) applies to the mid-20's singles living at home with plenty of disposable income. I would get married just to avoid being called that.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Wow you are too stupid to even get your stereotypes or your spelling of said stereotypes right.
Also, Tacos.
That billion probably comes mostly from the 360, considering it's the only console that doesn't have the huge price difference and does, somewhat, regulate the game prices.
@AD
Yeah.
I don't understand this post señor.
I don't understand this post señor.
I am mexican, but I buy at USA to get more for less.
@everyone-who-said-it-was-expensive: Indeed it is. That's why I don't form part of that market. I generally import them from the US, It's cheaper and it's a hop, a skip and a jump away.
Borders pwn.
oh, and post-racism is sooo in.
Mexicans are very "in" also =). And I do the same, I cross the border buy games and go back to my crime filled city =D.
