About a month ago we posted video of an incredible-looking fan remake of the underrated Metroid II: Return of Samus. It looked great, but just try to forget about it for a second and feast your eyes on the above. Now this ... this is what I am talking about.

This amazingly well made trailer is from community member (and obvious Metroid super fan) vonrichter’s upcoming Metroid: SR388. He posted the video on his community blog last night and, needless to say, I was impressed.

The game looks to be a completely original Metroid game using graphics from SNES masterpiece Super Metroid, with a ton of new enemies, weapons, special moves, backgrounds, and animations (*swoon*). And that scene with Samus sliding on the ice? Badass! Metroid: SR388 looks so good, in fact, that it could easily pass for an officially licensed 2D Metroid sequel. Do you not agree?

My hat is off to you, vonrichter. What you and your team have created so far is ridiculously impressive. I can’t wait to see (and play!) the final product. Good luck ... and may Nintendo’s legal team stay as far away from you as possible. Let me know if you need me to distract them with a Mario copyright infringement or something.

We're such vets. I love how the average new gamer wouldn't be impressed by some of these 2D frames, but when we see Samus walking backwards we're all like "OH SHIIIIIT!!!"

Agreed 100%. It's ok in Zelda, but it just does not fit the context of Metroid. That being said..

Samus definitely lacks the motor skills to move things around. This one time at Band-Aid camp, she couldn't even figure out how to open a tuba case with a solid gold statue of Bob Hoskins.

I have to get something off my chest, Bool: I wasn't born with these great legs. I used to do aerobics 'till I dropped... then I found Thigh Master!

It might turn out that you push giraffes around, or possibly Sonic the Hedgehog, while Carmen Sandiego salivates in the corner while stroking a fuzzy expandable capsule creature head drenched in at least 4 or 5 vats of mayonnaise.

OK, you got me cornered... this is actually a sidescrolling Zelda game in disguise, and if you squint your eyes really hard while watching the video, and count backwards from 8.73, you will see Link having way too much fun with a silver arrow and a giant chicken boss!

Two new games in my second favorite series (even if the first series IS getting raped anally by Squeenix). Please don't let the Nintendo lawyers get wind of this before it gets released. Also, please release a level editor for it. Fan-made levels for a fangame would rock.

Umm, if I'm not mistaken,Moonwalking is nothing new. You could do it in Super Metroid, but you had to enable it in the config.

See Nintendo, us hardcore Metroid fans have been waiting for ever. You remake Metroid but leave Metroid II to collect dust in your basement and don't even bother to remake it, then you idiots say Metroid: Dread is coming out but it gets axed, thanks. Then Retro Studio's completely fucks up with Metroid Prime 3 by having it riddled with tacky voice acting work, and a terrible, corny ending (You will understand if you saw it).

Stop raping this great series you guys made and start making something worth playing. Metroid 2's remake has been dreamed about by every true Metroid fan, and anything after Metroid Fusion in the Metroid timeline would be great (considering you fucked Samus up so fucking badly with the fucking gay fuckin frog suit she now wears).

Here's a protip for anyone thinking about doing a project like this in the future: DO NOT SHOW IT OFF BEFORE IT IS DONE!

Yes it's fun to show people what you've been working on and have them admire it, but if you wait until it's completed and just release it they can never shut it down, even if you have to pull your website and cease distribution personally.

Looks amazing though.

I don't think hiding the game from the public eye is really a good idea, or crucial.
Hiding it and releasing it sounds like a good way to get hit with a lawsuit instead of just a C&D.

this looks amazing!! i always did like metroid II, except for the whole 'every area looks almost exactly the same' kinda thing. looks like this will change that immensely! i love the last two seconds of the video, too XDD

the gameplay looks a little slower/floatier than other metroid 2d games to me though. but i'm sure i'll adjust.

It's exactly the same as Super Metroid physics, except slightly faster. So if you do not like the first 3 Metroid games (which are even floatier than this game), you probably won't like this either. Personally, I think Super Metroid has amazing gameplay.

I know this is nitpicky but as someone who has played (and ultimately hated) hacked Super Metroid remakes, I have to ask... What do you mean the physics are "slightly faster"? One of the hacks I've played had claimed "the physics are faster" and it ended up killing the fun entirely.

I also have a fear that because this game is fan-made, the gameplay itself will be harder than it's supposed to be. Please, please, please tell me you're being faithful to the original games and making it only somewhat challenging for the regular playthrough but difficult if you want to collect all the goodies.

Nitpicks aside, the trailer makes it look amazing and I eagerly await its completion.

DaveKap: VR and I had this discussion too and I doubt it will be designed in a way that only hardcore Metroid speedrunner fanatics can enjoy it. But, there will probably be some special things in there just for them... otherwise, I think you can rest easy that the game will be playable to a wide as possible audience.

Metroid 2 is easily one of the most underated Nintendo games ever. I got the original cart for about £1 not so long ago, and enjoyed every minute of it. Remake looks awesome.
