About a month ago we posted video of an incredible-looking fan remake of the underrated Metroid II: Return of Samus. It looked great, but just try to forget about it for a second and feast your eyes on the above. Now this ... this is what I am talking about.

This amazingly well made trailer is from community member (and obvious Metroid super fan) vonrichter’s upcoming Metroid: SR388. He posted the video on his community blog last night and, needless to say, I was impressed.

The game looks to be a completely original Metroid game using graphics from SNES masterpiece Super Metroid, with a ton of new enemies, weapons, special moves, backgrounds, and animations (*swoon*). And that scene with Samus sliding on the ice? Badass! Metroid: SR388 looks so good, in fact, that it could easily pass for an officially licensed 2D Metroid sequel. Do you not agree?

My hat is off to you, vonrichter. What you and your team have created so far is ridiculously impressive. I can’t wait to see (and play!) the final product. Good luck ... and may Nintendo’s legal team stay as far away from you as possible. Let me know if you need me to distract them with a Mario copyright infringement or something.

This game is going to be amazing. Forget GTAIV, this is what I'm waiting for.

I want to know how far along it is. He says it's got 90% new sprites and animations, but he doesn't mention how close it is to being done.

i'm not a fan of the block pushing ability. it just doesn't seem to fit samus. if she can just move shit to solve puzzles, why not blow a hole through the fucking door to do skip a few steps of a puzzle.

i know the block pushing would be part of the puzzle, but it just doesn't seem to fit the rest of what she can do.

So far it looks great, I hope there's a playable demo at least before Nintendo's legal starts attacking with flying wiimotes.

This is going to be like 10 times better than any of the Prime crap Nintendo wasted so much time with.

Hi, WiiWare? Yeah, there's this fan-made Metroid game that I think you should look at.

Uh huh...uh huh...right. Yeah, no waggle controls.

DLC? Well, you could do that thing you're doing with the FF title and let people buy bikinis...

Please. They'd eat that shit up. Charge 'em $5 per bikini.

Looks like I saw a little bit of Weighted companion cube (or at least a box with a huge resemblance to one) as well as some Castlevania-esque whip swinging going on there.

It honestly looks amazing. My hat is off to you good sirs and madames.

I'm really, really impressed by this. It kicks the shit out of some of those GBA Metoid games, that's for sure. Very nice work.

The only thing is...what's the goal here for you? Was this made totally out of love for Metroid, or are you looking to make some money? I'm sad to say it, but I see lawyers unleashing the hounds on you when they should be cutting you a check instead.

So very amazing! But I'd be highly surprised if Nintendo's legal team wouldn't step in soon...

I also hope, they stay far away from him!

See Nintendo? This is what happens when you don't release a 2D Metroid like we asked. Other people have to make awesome replacements instead!

This is why we can't have nice things!

Ok, so I actually know the guy that did the sprites for this game and saw parts of it while it was still in very early stages. (I'm sure he probably reads D'toid.. if so, "Congrats R.".) The game was amazingly awesome a few years ago when I saw it in action, I'm sure it's only been perfected since.

"as well as some Castlevania-esque whip swinging going on there."

...Have you played any Metroid game since Metroid II? The grapple beam is nothing new.

But damn does this looks awesome. Somebody obviously gets what makes Metroid Metroid. Isolation, atmosphere, big weirdass bosses. I'll play this for sure.

Hold off judgement until you see how the pushing works in the actual game, and what kind of things it's used for ;-)

Nintendo should port this to DS and/or sell it on Virtual console while giving you royalties. I'm punching a hooker in the tits if Nintendo squashes it with legal action before I get to play it.
