Metroid: Other M was almost an on-rails game (UPDATED) photo

Today I had the privilege of attending a GDC talk by Yoshio Sakamoto of Nintendo*, who is perhaps most famous for his work on the Metroid series. He divulged many of the secrets behind his history as a producer and gamemaker, including quite a few about the upcoming Metroid: Other M. The most interesting one? While developing the control scheme, there was one thing he was unwilling to budge on: he wanted Samus to "move along a rail".

Yep, that's right. His original vision was for Other M to be on-rails, and it would have been if it had not been for Team Ninja.

In disagreement about rails being the best way to go, they first suggested using the Nunchuk, but Sakamoto was very adamant about using the sideways Wiimote scheme. But then they proposed a system where Samus could move freely in a full 3D environment using the control pad. Sakamoto tested this scheme, said it "worked perfectly", and was finally swayed to change his mind.

What do you think, Metroid fans? Are you glad Team Ninja stepped in, or would you have rather seen Sakamoto's full vision come to fruition?

* a full summary of this talk is coming soon!

[UPDATE: To clarify, Sakamoto meant a side-scrolling rail game, a-la Klonoa.]

I haven't been this nervous about a Metroid game since Metroid Prime, and that one really proved me wrong. Hopefully Other M hammers out its control issues before release and becomes another pleasant surprise.

I don't understand the context "on-rails" is being used in. Like a light gun based game (House of the Dead) or sidescroller?

It falls in between Super metroid and Fusion. So why couldn't it have stayed 2D? Metroid is one of the few things Nintendo have that I enjoy. And so far Other M hasn't shown anything I like....

It sounds like they were talking about something akin to Killer 7.

Either way, from what I've heard about the current controls, I'm glad Team Ninja is on board. I, for one, like where Other M is going.

Team Ninja has never impressed me.

I love Metroid.

Somehow those two facts add up to I don't give a crap about this game.

On rails metroid wouldn't work its great that Team Ninja stepped in im really liking how Other M is panning out its like it is combining the style of the previous metroid games into one, its bound to be awesome.

I can't believe there was the possibility this game could have actually sucked more than it already will.

I'm thrilled about the product Team Ninja seems to be putting out, and find it preferential to an on-rails experience. At the same time, I understand the benefits of those games that have been developed as on-rails for the Wii and wouldn't have dismissed Other M entirely based on that alone.

I believe "on-rails" in this instance means more like Klonoa or even the old-school Castlevania games moreso than HOTD.

Hey, don't be knocking the on rails... maybe if y'all picked up House of the Dead: Overkill and Dead Space Extraction like a real gamer would, then you'd see that they ain't all bad.

BTW, I love Team Ninja not only for the gameplay change, but for making Samus hotter than she already was

Lol @ the "real gamer" statements by Wii fans. I'm a real gamer, I just don't care for on rail shooters.

@Dreamweaver: There is nothing wrong with on-rails, Sin & Punishment and Star Fox 64 are both great games, Metroid should just not be on-rails.

Dreamweaver: I have all those games, and I'll be the first to admit they suck.
They're good for a 5 minute 'look how fun the arcade used to be!', but other than that, it's a guided crappy way to tell a story that limits any moving. There's a reason why Capcom doesn't want to put RE on the wii anymore. (apparently RE4 w/ Wii controls didn't jive to them either!) - but really, real gamers like to play games, and it doesn't matter what games, so you're no more or less a real gamer than anyone here, down fanboy, down!

Also, I'm glad they didn't make it a railer. I'm sick of the wii dumbing down the gaming experience as is.

ummm...it is 2D is terms of gameplay not graphics. It just has dynamic angles from what I've heard, kinda like the pause screen in Smash Bros. And it terms to 3D a la prime when you point at the screen, but it's limited, as you can even move in that view

That is an incredibly odd consideration to make, given that one of the staples throughout the Metroid series has been the idea of exploration and backtracking through various areas as new items and abilities are unlocked and obtained. That's always been what made the series stand out for me and set it apart from other games of the action/adventure verve. I especially liked the scanning enemies and objects that was incorporated into the Prime entries of the series.

They most likely meant "on rails" - as in, an on rail shooter. What else could they mean, guys? :D

And that would be awful. A series that prides itself on exploration, and created one of the best 3D exploration games of all time, on rails...yep.

Yeah, I'm happy to see that most commenters realise he probably mean Klonoa style. Equating what he said to an "on rails" game is pretty preposterous.

Exploration has always been a core component of every Metroid game. Why anyone would think it's a good idea to take this away and make it on rails is absolutely beyond me.

Don't care about "would-haves," "could-haves" and "almosts." I'm just glad they all made the right decision on what they felt worked for the game.

Nintendo took on Team Ninja because the team behind Metroid in Japan had little experience with big 3D projects. They know Metroid and they've mostly been making DS and GBA games for while, they even had input on the Prime games. They do good work, they just don't live in big-budget 3D development - this is why the collaborated with Team Ninja.

My only concern is really that they're gonna pull another Metroid Fusion on us again. I don't like it when plot undermines a game's core gameplay values.

I can appreciate the fact that Nintendo is trying to appeal to those who hate Metroid for the slow speed and backtracking of the game, but if it was on-rails that would be an outright disaster. I'm still looking forward to this one, but this hasn't exactly quelled my worries.

The last thing the Wii needs is another rail shooter.
Don't get me wrong, I love me some House of the Dead, but the Wii's software library is saturated by rail shooters.
(At least it wasn't going to be another edutainment/fitness game.
I can just imagine it: "Metroid Junior: Samus Teaches Typing".

"Don't get me wrong, I love me some House of the Dead, but the Wii's software library is saturated by rail shooters." There are a total of around 6 rail-shooters on the Wii. Hardly oversaturation, wouldn't you think?

Interesting bit of trivia, but this is ultimately a non-issue. Whatever the game was in planning, it's not that anymore. For example, Good Will Hunting was originally supposed to be an FBI thriller.

This is just stuff that is revealed. I bet there are many games (and movies and books and etc.) that go through drastic pre-production revisions and we never hear about them. Let it go.

I'm glad it's not on-rails. The last thing we'd need is a Metroid that gets lumped in with every other half-assed attempt at a "hardcore" Wii game.

All my comments are on rails. My computer just automatically scrolls through different blogs on different sites, and all I have to do is aim my keyboard and type. Sure, I basically have no control over what's going on on my screen, and it seems like the company that made my computer was just too lazy to make a computer that controls properly, but at least I don't have to put in any effort while still acting like I'm actually doing something.

I would be interested to see how the on-rails would have worked, but to actually implement it in the final? Oh, HYNE NO!
