Nick Chester already touched on this in his outstanding Metroid: Other M preview from yesterday, but I got so excited about this one particular detail that I felt it bore repeating.
Since upcoming Wii game Metroid: Other M has been revealed to be the direct sequel to Super Metroid, I figured there would be a few references to the SNES masterpiece thrown in here and there. But, this ... well, this I wasn’t ready for.
In the opening cinematic of the game, the entire final sequence from Super Metroid is recreated with drastically improved, completely 3D visuals. To try my best not to ruin it for anyone who hasn’t played Super Metroid (blasphemy!), this is the now legendary sequence involving Samus and a certain Baby Metroid. For people that have experienced it, it goes without saying it is one of the most emotionally complex, exquisitely staged sequences in videogame history.
It also happens to be the very first memorable moment I covered in my long-running Memory Card series. And it also just so happens to be MY FAVORITE VIDEOGAME SEQUENCE OF ALL TIME!
Now, I don’t want to get my hopes up for what I am going to see come June 27 -- the tragically beautifully Palom and Porom scene recreated in the Final Fantasy IV remake for the DS, for example, was not nearly as powerful in 3D -- but this news is still very exciting to hear. To this day, the return of the Baby Metroid still brings a little tear to my eye every time I see it. It really is that stunning. For me, seeing this genius piece of visual storytelling recreated in Metroid: Other M alone is worth the price of admission.
What do you think? Does this little detail get you excited about playing Metroid: Other M? Where would you rank the Baby Metroid sequence in your list of greatest videogame moments of all time?
I await the sight of this scene with bated breath. My sentiment mirrors yours pretty much exactly.
wheee
I think the death of the hatchling was one of the most impactful moments in all of gaming. The hatchling showed there was more than a warrior side to Samus and that was an emotion you carried over the course of two games. Then the way events later unfolded, the realization that this was the hatchling and then to see it sacrifice itself for its "mother" Samus was gutwrenching for me as teenage.
It really did make you want to kill this shit out of Mother Brain.
It's definitely in my top three. The music does it for me. And I have high hopes for this new Metroid. I have a few concerns over voice-acting, but I have no worries about the gameplay. Can't wait to play it.
Metroid is first?
Corruption sure seemed like a pre-cursor to Metroid to me. Weird.
:)
I am a very emotional person. Haha. :)
I never saw the scene, honestly I haven't touched the metroid series since the original NES title. Maybe this will finally bring me back in.
Don't laugh, the only two Metroid games I've ever played and beaten are the classic NES Metroid and the super sexy SNES (Super)Metroid, so, yes, I'm excited as hell for this direct sequel!
It's going to be an amazing year for fans of the Wii!
Most of the writers here seem to be in the boat of "Don't ask for rehashes or remakes, we want new original experiences!"
But then when something like this happens, most people (including writers) are jumping with "OMG THIS IS MY FAVORITE THING OF ALL TIME, THIS WILL BE AMAZING I ALWAYS WANTED TO PLAY THIS RE-MADE WITH BETTER GRAPHICS!"
I just find it annoying to come here one day and read about how video-game fans need to shut up about everything, then the next day read a hypocritical article about how people are jizzing over the exact thing Destructoid claims they need to "shut up" about.
Not only is this a sequel to an all-time great game, they are recreating a SCENE of that game in superior graphics as a nod to the fans.
I FAIL TO SEE YOUR LOGIC SIR.
it is one of the most emotionally complex, exquisitely staged sequences in videogame history.
I love Chadperbole. <3
I thought the exact same thing about Corruption... I don't get the Mother Brain continuity after playing that game.
Quantity shouldn't make a difference. A concept is a concept, you should either be for it or against it. Or, if you HAVE to be on the fence, don't go writing such strong articles suggesting that fans need to "shut up" about it, because apparently they don't need to shut up depending on how much of it they're getting.
My point made, it's outside the Prime series.
:D just trollin', this could indeed be awesome.
lmao
I HATE spoiling things, but I got so excited about this that I had to share. :)
I don't know how this excitement relates at all to Jim's article. Not trying to disagree, I just don't see it. :)
Regardless, this article has nothing to do with critiquing gamers or what kind of games I want to see made -- it's just a pointless blog post about how excited I am to see my favorite videogame sequence being remade. Totally harmless. :)
I don't see what is so funny about that. The sequence is incredibly well-made. You don't have to agree, but don't be disrespectful. :)
