If you work for Nintendo, please cover your eyes and look away. This blog post is not for you.

About seven months back I posted an early trailer for a fan remake of Game Boy classic Metroid II: Return of Samus. Needless to say, I loved what I saw. I think I even threw in a few more adjectives that start with “a” and end in “mazing” than usual.

Well, word from creator DoctorM64’s progress blog is that the game -- dramatically entitled Metroid: Confrontation -- is finally finished! You can download the polished final product right here. Even if you are only a self-proclaimed mild fan of the early 2D Metroids (blasphemy!) you really have to check this remake out. The graphics are rendered in a beautiful Super Metroid style and the smooth gameplay feels exactly like something stamped with the Nintendo seal of approval (and, again, Nintendo employees: look away! THERE IS NOTHING COPYRIGHT INFRINGING TO SEE HERE!).

Put down that fan translation of Mother 3 for just a second to check Metroid: Confrontation out. You won’t be disappointed. In fact, you may throw out a few “amazing”s of your own.

[UPDATE: So, it looks like Metroid: Confrontation is an extended tech demo for another game, not the actual Metroid II remake. Although both games look almost identical, the actual Metroid II remake is still being worked on (but almost finished!). How confusing! The demo is still pretty great, though, so check it out. FAIL! The game isn't fail, mind you, but I am for being confused! EPIC CHAD FAIL!]

Doesn't seem like a perfectly faithful port, there wasn't any ledge hanging as far as I can recall in Metroid 2. You got nothing but ball form, spider ball, ball bombs, and three different beam upgrades, BUT ONLY ONE AT A TIME! You had to revisit chozo statues to change weapons!
...Also, wait. You didn't fight Kraid or Ridley in Metroid 2 either, so wtf. You had various forms of Metroids, along their various stages of development, from newly hatches to dragon-esque.

Chad, it's only a demo.

Ummm... Chad. As far as I recall, that's not the full game, but the name of a mini-release tech demo sort of thing.

Sweet, I had been watching both this and Mother 3, to see them finished within a week of each other, along with every other game in the history of the world being released this month... This is a good time to be a gamer.

With this and mother 3 so close together, it feels like we're entering a second golden age for nintendo. No thanks to them, of course

Sadly, Nintendo would never publish this as they're too busy gearing up for Wii Music!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Chad, but unless someone with a newer version of WINE has gotten this running on Linux I am VERY disappointed. Guess I'll go back to Mother 3 now.

Sry but you are losing your mind Chad. If you read his latest blog it even talks about how he is still working on the main game. From his original blog post about Metroid: Confrontation:

"So, the demo has a new name: Metroid: Confrontation"

It's a standalone product, but it is not the actual M2 remake.

@Wedge,
Hmmm, now I see what you are saying. I guess what I am playing is a tech demo for a separate project. *confused*

Post updated.

@Wedge,
Hahaha. No worries. I am glad you helped me see the light.

Sadly -- and maybe I shouldn't admit this -- I have been following this project a lot. I just heard that "it" was done and I immediately assumed it was the Metroid II remake. I even downloaded the darn thing and started playing it! *embarrassed*

I didn't know this other game even existed.

Eh. What can you do. At least I gave this demo a bunch of publicity! :) :)

Yeah, even this fail was awesome. The tech demo is really cool but I think it's too easy compared to other Metroids. Ridley and Kraig are wimps on this on. :P
