Metroid creator 'encourages' more Metroid Prime ideas photo

The world may currently be wrapped up in its excitement for Team Ninja's Metroid: Other M, but original Metroid creator Yoshio Sakamoto has said he'd encourage Retro Studios to have another crack at the less traditional Metroid Prime series.

"With regards to the Prime series, if the team at Retro comes up with an idea that does bring a sequel to the series to fruition, I by all means encourage them to do that," he states. "But I'm not directly involved with the Prime games. In terms of the Metroid series stories that I've told, the games that I've been involved in, I started with the NES Metroid and took it through Fusion.

"I'm hoping to tie the Super Metroid and Fusion stories together, and until I do that I can't think about what happens after Fusion, but if the concept does come to me I'd like to continue the story and see how far it can go.
One of my goals is to present Samus as an appealing human character, and that involves explaining a little bit about what happened in her past as well as the characters that influenced her. The story will play a big part."

It's cool to see so much Metroid talk going on. It's long been one of Nintendo's more forgotten franchises, despite its strong cult following. Here's hoping Other M gives the series a firm shove into the spotlight.

I'm all for knowing more about her past as long as it's not overdone. There is something nice about the mysteries about what where and why Samus does what she does. I'd like to know myself but not to the point that she starts to have much more dialogue than usual in future games.

I'm not a huge metroid fan but it always struck me as one of Nintendo's big name franchises. Starfox, F-Zero, Donkey Kong Country, these are the forgotten titles.

I hope Other M is good.

Completely agreeing with filling the gap between Super Metroid and Fusion. maybe Other M will take care of that.

Team Ninja is going to make Samus sooo slutty.
Probably a blue bikine with her nipples appearing.

Nice to know Sakamoto doesn't feel any dislike for the Prime games. Metroid has all the room to have different playstyles as long as it retains the original feel (Mario has 2D Platformers, 3D Platformers, and RPG's as it's major releases). I love games in both playstyles and I hope I can love one in the new playstyle Other M looks to be.

For a while I thought Prime 2 and 3 were disappointments compared to the original. Having replayed them recently they are actually fun, well-made games. Retro really did put their all into the series, even if it was kinda obvious that they were getting tired going into Prime 2 and 3. If they want to take another shot at a Metroid game, after a well-deserved break, they have my full support.

My only hope is that Other M doesn't go the Fusion Route. While that is a well-made game I couldn't get into it because of the hand-holding. Also, to be perfectly honest, the story was nowhere near good enough for me to give up the freedom that earlier titles offered. Here's hoping for the best.

The most exciting thing about Other M is how well it pays attention to the lore. Adam Malcovich from Fusion is finally making an appearance (and with the same design as the official comic released in Japan) AND we're going to find out what actually happened to him? Awesome.

The fact that R&D1 is working on it just as much as Team Ninja means it's going to be straight up Metroid. No offense to the Prime games, but I'm with Dyson; they didn't feel like the Metroid I loved in the 2D games.

I hate the prime games.

The only ones I have liked are Metroid Fusion and Super Metroid.

I really hope Team Ninja does good on this to give me another metroid game to like.

Im still sad that we never got that rumored Metorid Dread or whatever it was that would have been supposedly 2D

I dug the prime series a lot and would love to see Metroid go both directions, but a return to 2D is fine with me after finally getting around to play Super Metroid last year adn realizing it was the greatest game ever.

Strangely enough, I'm probably one of the few Metroid fans who doesn't give a crap about Adam. He was never well developed enough to matter to me (played both Fusion and read the Manga (short review: okay, four times as long as it needs to be and bogged down by uninteresting characters and plot development). Maybe they can do something with the character but since I didn't squeal with delight at seeing him I doubt it will work for me.

Nothing against the series producer, but I don't think Metroid works with a storyline in the middle of the gameplay. Prime (and to a lesser extent Super) did it best by having a well-developed storyline that was there if you wanted it. If you read the lores and logs you got a great story but if you just wanted a fun game then you had that too. Every player took away what they from the game.

I'm not saying that Other M won't make it work. I'm just saying that Fusion and Prime 3 didn't (this one to a lesser extent).

What's there to explain between Super and Fusion? Mother Brain died, Biologic cloned Metroids, Samus got infected with an X, and Fusion happened. And that was in 2002. It's been 7 years, let's move this along already. Or at least release Dread on the DS. If there's another 2D metroid on a Handheld, that would be great.

gamadaya: How did Ridley wind up a frozen corpse aboard B.S.L.?

That would actually be kind of sad if that was the only reason they made the game. To explain how Ridley ended up there. I would have much rather had a 5th game considering all they have to play around with due to the events in Fusion. Samus is now part-Metroid (maybe she starts getting certain urges), she is likely being hunted down by the Federation for disobeying orders, I doubt the Pirates wouldn't be involved. There is too much they could and should do with that. Hopefully Dread isn't far off.

@MotoRobo

Nintendo owns Retro Studios. Some of the people from Retro left and founded their own studio, but Retro, and many of the people responsible for the Prime trilogy, remain with Nintendo.

I think I have an idea. WHY was the Metroid breeding program created? what purpose could a race of parasites serve the federation? Something like could be a decent underlying plot in itself, without getting intrusive.

I just assumed that that was his respawn point. He doesn't seem to ever die no matter what.

Actually, I don't think he was dead until the X got to him.

Retro had some good ideas for Prime 2 and 3, they just weren't implemented well enough. Also, I think introducing more third person gameplay elements into the series, even to the point of having a choice of first/third person on the fly.

I hate the fact that a lot of work goes in to making an original concept for an old series and then all people can say is go back to selling out with Mario and Link =(

@DarkSaint76

The Prime Series would be better if you could decide which perspective of it you wanted to play in.

DarkSaint76/GoldenGamerXero: Would that even work? The games are designed to work in a 1st Person perspective. It's not as simple as flipping a switch. They'd have to design the game twice for both perspectives. Let's not forget how silly it might look to see Samus in 3rd Person (I'm not entirely sure Other M is 3rd Person yet). It's a lot to ask for something you might not even want.

P.S. Don't mention the Elder Scrolls. The battle system in those games sucks. It doesn't matter what perspective you play since your hero will still swing his arm in the same left/right or up/down motion. The combat engine in those games weren't nearly as much of a focus as the leveling, classes, environments, dialogue, ect.

Ho about putting in some real live Chozos I've been dying to see them in a metroid game.

Zepwich: First of all, the entire species is extinct.

Second, you get to see one in a flashback near the end of ZM as well as during the entire Manga. Don't forget the Chozo Ghost's in Prime 1 as well.

Third, it's kinda the point not to see them. The games trump them up as a mystical and powerful race. They are shrouded in mystery. To see a live one would ruin that feeling.

The original Metroid Prime had among the very best narratives in video games. The way it was logically unfolded was superb. Retro definitely hit their peak in immersion with the first one.
