Metroid arm cannon gets steampunk'd photo

Steampunk, while something I have never gotten into, is an interesting concept that romanticizes a bygone age of top hats, monocles and industrialization. It also gives rise to some unique takes on technology, like a steampunk version of Samus Aran's arm cannon for example. Made by Skinz-N-Hydez, this unique take on Samus' trademark weapon is only one of many items crafted by the deviantart member.

Whether you like this arm cannon remake or not, a lot of time and energy was put into this thing, and I admire him for that, if nothing else. I certainly wouldn't have the patience or drive to assemble something so detailed. Metroid is not the only videogame Skinz has shown attention to either and if you check out his deviantart account you'll find items for Legend of Zelda and Fallout.

Maybe a Steampunk re-imagining is exactly what the Metroid series needs right about now to revitalize it. This arm-cannon could come with the next game's collector's edition.

It couldn't hurt the series any worse than the suffering and debilitation that Other M seems to have inflicted upon it.

Oh my dear lord, keep that down, don't put ideas into Nintendos head! Seriously, thats what the series doesn't need at all!

I didn't like other M either, even though I went in with an open mind and tried to like it. However I am starting to get annoyed that every time Metroid is mentioned people immediately start bemoaning Other M. Sure the story wasn't good, but it's not even the worst Metroid game (that title belongs to MP:Hunters). Metroid other M was a response to people saying they wanted a more "mature" Metroid game with a story. Even though the Metroid games were never childish, and were rich in back story (which I found more interesting than conventional story telling). Nintendo delivered what those fans wanted, and there's actually quite a few who enjoyed it. Personally I just shrugged off the game because there's no point in crying over split milk. I just hope we get a new 2D Metroid game soon, it's been 7 long years since Zero Mission.

What Scissors said. Specially the "getting a good 2d metroid soon" bit.

I would definitely pay money for that arm cannon.

That reminds me, I'd kill for a steampunk Legend of Zelda game. Why the hell haven't we had a steampunk Zelda game yet?

As for Other M... It was set before Fusion, so we at least know things got better. I had some problems with the story, but I didn't dislike it as much as most people. My main gripe with it is that, aside from a few instances, it's not a Metroidvania until the very end.

I just want the series to move finally beyond Fusion so that we can finally get some new gameplay mechanics and environments to explore. I also hope that whoever develops the game returns to storytelling format seen in the Prime series, preferably between Echoes' and Corruption in terms of dialogue, if we must interact with characters at all. Most of the character development and plot development could be done via scans/personal diaries (Samus included) and a few optional viewable flashbacks associated with said scans, like the one at the beginning of Echoes.

Also, although Echoes' is my favorite Metroid game and I'd love another in the series like it, I'd want a 2D Metroid game much more. Fusion was the last original 2D Metroid game and that was linear as hell.

A re-imagining is unneeded, though, and, as cool as a steampunk Metroidvania could be, giving Metroid itself a steampunk setting would be silly. People are over exaggerating Other M's negative points and I feel those who write those long-ass essays about the dark undertones in its story (and gameplay mechanics) are just over-analyzing terrible writing while conveniently ignoring certain factors for the sake of their arguments.

@Faux - don't talk about Metroid again. Other M wasn't stellar, but it didn't destroy the franchise, either. It doesn't need a reboot. I think Nintendo now knows this series is better left to Retro Studios and out of Sakaguchi's hands.

Besides, Retro's more than proven they can do 2D games as well. Give them that Other M engine and they'd make something even better with it.

@Gamer-e - A "Metroidvania" is a game that is a lot like Metroid and a little like Castlevania, Metroid is just Metroid.

Also, steampunk Samus already happened.

Forgot to add the "steampunk" Samus - the Dark Suit:

Technically, its supposed to more resemble a Luminoth, but still, kinda steampunk lookin'.

After months of people shitting on Other M, I bought it a little over a month ago, and finally realized that it's flipping awesome.

If you mute any scene where Samus talks, and just enjoy the gameplay, it might be one of the best Metroid games yet.

That looks cool as shit. Major props to this dude.

Off topic: Other M was a fantastic Metroid game. It was set back by the few annoyances presented by the 1st person bits, but those segments dont ruin the game by any means. Its more true to the classic formula than any of the Prime games, and manages to make Samus feel human as well as a badass. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hm, maybe I would actually enjoy Other M if I played it. It sounded fun to me. And that arm cannon looks awesome. Steampunk has always been an interesting style to me.

Yeah... another 2d Metroid would rock. If you haven't yet, I reccomend playing on of the fan made Metroid 2 remakes. An official Metroid 2 remake would be great.

Metroid Dread needs to be back in production.
Metroid Other M was a good game. It was just very different from Other Metroid games in terms of gameplay. You cannot tell me that fight with Ridley sucked. I will kill you.

There was a lot of things Missing from the game that other games had. But for somebody who hadn't worked on a Metroid game before I give them props. I would say Let Retro do the next game. They are Genius. MP2 was also my favorite prime game. (1 was a masterpiece too)
