Metro 2033 may be about post-apocalyptic Russia, but if you thought that would make it the next Fallout 3 or S.T.A.L.K.E.R, you'd be dead wrong. Unlike those games, Metro 2033 is not going the open-world route, giving us something a bit more linear in the name of cohesive storytelling.
"It’s a story-driven, atmospheric, first-person shooter. It’s not an open world game," THQ EP Dean Sharpe tells Inside Xbox. "The goal was to make a very believable, atmospheric, story-driven game, and I think that we did that."
I love a good open-world first-person game, but it's cool that THQ isn't jumping on the bandwagon if it feels the game is better served with a more linear structure. Metro 2033 seems quite promising, so I hope to see much more of it soon.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
(It sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but I'm not. I just REALLY like the apocalypse.)
Off-topic, but has anyone seen The Road yet? It wasn't quite the book, but I really enjoyed it. Talk about despair.
I'm going to have to use that one more often.
I haven't seen it yet, but I'm planning to this weekend. How was it different from the book?
They took some liberties with the flashbacks to flesh out the characters a bit more, but other than that (and a few, minor, cut scenes) the movie followed the story and feel of the book pretty closely.
I definitely think the story itself is better suited to book form, but the cinematography and acting were top-notch. (In my opinion, Robert Duvall deserves a best-supporting Oscar nod for his portrayal of the old man, regardless of how short his on-screen time was.)
It's certainly worth seeing for fans of the book and of gloomy movies in general.
Far Cry 2 suffered by going completely open. It just doesn't work for a pure shooter in my opinion.
from this set - http://www.gamesradar.com/pc/metro-2033/screenshots/g-20081219161519817058/pic-FDCE2C54-FDD3-486D-BB98-84086030AC4C#autoPlay
very nice art - and I seriously love when studios show their art with full size HD screens. Wish they were the norm here on my beloved Destructoid.
