Metro 2033 won't be an open-world game photo

Metro 2033 may be about post-apocalyptic Russia, but if you thought that would make it the next Fallout 3 or S.T.A.L.K.E.R, you'd be dead wrong. Unlike those games, Metro 2033 is not going the open-world route, giving us something a bit more linear in the name of cohesive storytelling.

"It’s a story-driven, atmospheric, first-person shooter. It’s not an open world game," THQ EP Dean Sharpe tells Inside Xbox. "The goal was to make a very believable, atmospheric, story-driven game, and I think that we did that."

I love a good open-world first-person game, but it's cool that THQ isn't jumping on the bandwagon if it feels the game is better served with a more linear structure. Metro 2033 seems quite promising, so I hope to see much more of it soon.

I'm very exxited for this. I cannot get enough of post apocalyptic games.

(It sounds like I'm being sarcastic, but I'm not. I just REALLY like the apocalypse.)

Off-topic, but has anyone seen The Road yet? It wasn't quite the book, but I really enjoyed it. Talk about despair.

Hopefully this will be less buggy than the Stalker games.

Hahaha @ "exxited".

I'm going to have to use that one more often.

I just hope that they refine the FPS elements of STALKER. Both SoC and CS felt very clunky.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm planning to this weekend. How was it different from the book?

@HEL105

They took some liberties with the flashbacks to flesh out the characters a bit more, but other than that (and a few, minor, cut scenes) the movie followed the story and feel of the book pretty closely.

I definitely think the story itself is better suited to book form, but the cinematography and acting were top-notch. (In my opinion, Robert Duvall deserves a best-supporting Oscar nod for his portrayal of the old man, regardless of how short his on-screen time was.)

It's certainly worth seeing for fans of the book and of gloomy movies in general.

So it's like Batman:AA? No open world but with a really big limited space?

Im glad this is linear. You can have a great story driven experience when its like that. Imagine Uncharted 2 being open world, would not of been as fast pace and for me fun.

Personally I think Crysis and the original Far Cry are the best way to do shooters, large open levels with a lot of non-linear decisions about how to reach objectives, but generally linear gameplay and not one large open world.

Far Cry 2 suffered by going completely open. It just doesn't work for a pure shooter in my opinion.

here is a nice screen -

from this set - http://www.gamesradar.com/pc/metro-2033/screenshots/g-20081219161519817058/pic-FDCE2C54-FDD3-486D-BB98-84086030AC4C#autoPlay

very nice art - and I seriously love when studios show their art with full size HD screens. Wish they were the norm here on my beloved Destructoid.

I'm definitely excited for this and hopeful that it will turn out well. I think non-linearity is overrated, especially this half-baked type of non-linearity, that just gives you a hugely annoying openworld to get from story mission from story mission, that we get every time a publisher claims non linear gameplay.
