Back in May, THQ told us that a downloadable content pack for Metro 2033 would be available "soon." By "soon," it meant August, apparently -- the DLC in question, "The Ranger Pack," is out tomorrow on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and Steam.

The pack will add a new "Ranger Mode" to the game, which reduces the ammunition available to the player while increasing damage and the number of enemies encounter. Also, say goodbye to the HUD, as it's stripped away for this more "realistic" mode. (You know, as "realistic" as a game where you fight creatures in tunnels can get.)

You'll also get new Achievements, along with two new weapons -- the Heavy Automatic Shotgun and the Volt Driver.

Good news for PC gamers -- the update is free. Xbox 360 folks will have to pony up 240 MS Points.

I tried to play the game originally with the HUD disabled and it really added to the immersion, but then i realised the game needs a crosshair, shotguns have no iron sights so cant be aimed without and throwing knifes have no way of aiming without one either.

Well, that's kind of why this game is partly touted as a survival horror game. Wouldn't be very "horror" like if you were an 8 foot tall Terminator with a mega-hud from the future, now would it?

Loved this game. A desolate world, tough but manageable combat, and mysterious (albeit silly) creatures. I sat in one of the bars in the stations and just eavesdropped for like 20 minutes. They really went all out recording dialogue for npc's. Can understand the gripes but I really dug it.

Awesome, this, doubled with me upgrading my pc for my birthday, makes me glad I got the Steam version.

I liked Metro 2033 a lot, but my two biggest gripes about the game were that the ammunition was too little and the enemies were too many; I would barely make it out of most areas with any extra ammo left — and in a few instances, I just didn't have any ammo left at all. So I find it a little weird that this DLC exacerbates those two issues almost specifically. It's like you're asking for a frustrating experience if you choose to play in this new mode.

Nevertheless, I like the idea of a No-HUD option; the game is engaging, especially towards the latter half. Oh — and in 3D — this game blows minds.

Sigh...people who complain to developers and publishers about paying for patches on Xbox Live really need to redirect their hate. Its an XBOX LIVE requirement that you pay for substantially large patches and DLC, not the developer/publisher of these games.
