Metro 2033 gets release date, limited edition photo

THQ's upcoming shooter Metro 2033 is slightly more upcoming than we had anticipated. The Russian-themed post-apocalyptic FPS has just been announced for a March 16 release date in North America. Europe will be getting the game on March 19.

A limited edition version of the game has also been announced, which strikes me as arrogant for a fresh IP, but there you are. The special edition comes with an exclusive in-game weapon and four art cards.

Metro 2033 is based on a cult Russian novel of the same name. It revolves around a group of societies that have formed within underground metro stations after the end of the world. There are lots of gas masks, mutants, and neo Nazis. Should be a damn good game.

We're checking Metro 2033 out today and will be able to let you know just how good it is. Stay tuned for that!

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. January 28th, 2010 - THQ Inc. today announced that Metro 2033TM, the hotly anticipated first person shooter for Xbox 360® and PC, is scheduled to reach North American stores on March 16th, and European stores on March 19th 2010.

A Limited Edition will be available for both formats, including an exclusive in-game weapon – the formidable automatic shotgun – and four art cards by the Russian painter Anton Grechko, who was commissioned to create a range of artwork inspired by the universe of Metro 2033.

Standard and Limited Edition versions of Metro 2033 are available to pre-order now, with selected retailers offering free Metro 2033 themed Xbox LIVE® Avatar items with every pre-order.

About Metro 2033

Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands.

In 2013, the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.

The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside.

You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire, but raised Underground. Having never ventured beyond your Metro Station-City limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. Your journey takes you from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where your actions will determine the fate of mankind.

I'm actually kinda excited for this game, I'm pissed though cause you can't get the book here in the U.S. though I'm sure it'll change in the coming months.

Pfft, everybody knows that New York has the largest catacombs and most run down dangerous subway system EVAR.

Reading the book right now, and its a good read so far. It's kind of weird though that it has yet to feature a single gasmask or any of that kind of equipment shown in the game images. I guess the devs just think it looks "cool"...

How is releasing a limited edition arrogant? It's a buzzed about new release.

@Kree

Or they are taking a few liberties with the source material, which as far as I'm concerned, all adaptations should.

Art cards?

That's the best they could come up with?

In the trailer I watched it appeared the gas masks weren't exactly necessary in the metro, perhaps you haven't read far enough? I wouldn't know, I don't read books.

@ marktime

Of course they should, Im all for that, just not overly exited with the (IMHO) quit cliche character design shown so far.

@ dtomek

Exactly, they are not. But yeah, could be, have only read like half of it or so... try one, your missing probably the best storytelling medium out there.

Too bad they canned the PS3 version. I can't stand shooters on the horrid 360 pad.

I'm swedish too, and I don't rly like reading swedish translations :/ I checked every book store there is so far and the only edition you can get in Sweden so far is the Hardback swedish Ed.

I couldn't wait for it to MAYBE come out in english anytime soon so I just ordered it. Read the first chapter online, got hooked straight away!

People will make mods to bring back the automatic shotgun and make new weapons so it's not a big deal. The art cards might depend on how good they are though.

I'm mad excited for this game. Too many games today don't focus on having a great single player experience, so this game is really refreshing in that sense. Hopefully it turns out to be amazing, because I'm sure I'm not the only person that has been getting gradually excited for this game.

Yeah I generally like to read in the original language but I dont really see the point in reading an English translation rather than a Swedish one. Except if you know that one is better I guess. But your right, it seems its not out in english yet. Too bad
