THQ's upcoming shooter Metro 2033 is slightly more upcoming than we had anticipated. The Russian-themed post-apocalyptic FPS has just been announced for a March 16 release date in North America. Europe will be getting the game on March 19.
A limited edition version of the game has also been announced, which strikes me as arrogant for a fresh IP, but there you are. The special edition comes with an exclusive in-game weapon and four art cards.
Metro 2033 is based on a cult Russian novel of the same name. It revolves around a group of societies that have formed within underground metro stations after the end of the world. There are lots of gas masks, mutants, and neo Nazis. Should be a damn good game.
We're checking Metro 2033 out today and will be able to let you know just how good it is. Stay tuned for that!

About Metro 2033
Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands.
In 2013, the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.
The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside.
You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire, but raised Underground. Having never ventured beyond your Metro Station-City limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. Your journey takes you from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where your actions will determine the fate of mankind.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
If this game sell well, EA have to learn with this guys.
@Kree
Or they are taking a few liberties with the source material, which as far as I'm concerned, all adaptations should.
That's the best they could come up with?
In the trailer I watched it appeared the gas masks weren't exactly necessary in the metro, perhaps you haven't read far enough? I wouldn't know, I don't read books.
Of course they should, Im all for that, just not overly exited with the (IMHO) quit cliche character design shown so far.
@ dtomek
Exactly, they are not. But yeah, could be, have only read like half of it or so... try one, your missing probably the best storytelling medium out there.
Fair enough.
Where´d ya get the book? Is it in Russian?
Mines in Swedish since I dont read Russian (Im from Sweden) but you can get it in English from any online bookstore i suppose.
I'm swedish too, and I don't rly like reading swedish translations :/ I checked every book store there is so far and the only edition you can get in Sweden so far is the Hardback swedish Ed.
I couldn't wait for it to MAYBE come out in english anytime soon so I just ordered it. Read the first chapter online, got hooked straight away!
Yeah I generally like to read in the original language but I dont really see the point in reading an English translation rather than a Swedish one. Except if you know that one is better I guess. But your right, it seems its not out in english yet. Too bad
