If someone were to ask me where I'd like to first hear Metallica's new single, the answer would be simple: "Nowhere." But the idea of any band (even the aging metal pioneers, who haven't really put out an album I've liked since the early 90s) premiering a new single as a playable song in Rock Band has me intrigued.
In a recent Rock Mountain News article, Brian Crecente pulls some interesting tid bits out of MTV's senior vice president of home entertainment, Al DeGooyer. In the article, entitled "With 'Band' in hand, MTV eyes evolution," DeGooyer talks about releasing new music weekly for the game, and relationships with established and up-and-coming bands.
"There are a couple of things we've committed to, one of them with Metallica for example," he told Crescente. "They've reserved the right to give us their first single from their new album for the game."
What remains to be seen is whether this will be used as a tool for marketing (free content?), or if we'll have to pony up cash to hear/rock along with some new music. But Metallica? Part of me was hoping Justin Timeberlake would drop his new joint in the game, but I guess I'll take what I can get.

It's Metallica. They were at the front lines of the fight against free downloading.
This is their way to caash in.
I hope this fails. I know it won't given the xbox fanbase but I can always hope.
Personally, I would settle for playing ANY song in Rock Band, given that it still hasn't been released in Australia. Sucks.
but i supose this is what you get when you involve MTV in something, a constant flow of shit.
And if you're going to whine about them taking a stand against free downloading, shut up and get a job. CDs are cheap. Hell, even I'm against free downloading.
I can sense the comments labeling me as a fanboy now.
Just to make Lars angry.
Is that a bad thing? Up to you.
Personally, I find their hamfisted attempt at trying to retain any of their Metal standings to be laughable, and their music to be about as exciting as eating a frozen grape (which you should all try it's really quite lovely).
Of course, that's just my opinion.
If you want to listen to real Metal, you should totally listen to Megadeth (omg dave mustaine if he was ever in metalica they would be so much better lolololo).
Also, the reason why people give them such a hard time about their piracy crusade is due to the fact that they wouldn't be popular without concert bootlegs. But whatever.
Oh, so yeah not excited about this song. That picture is hilarious though! LOOK! OLD PEOPLE!

The idea of using Rock Band as a venue for new music, free or not, is cool and all... but... I mean, I don't exactly listen to a lot of new music these days (despite working for a radio conglom...), but how much new music out there is big on guitar riffs and the kind of instrumentation that might make a song fun to play in Rock Band? From what I can tell, outside of Foo Fighters and a precious few other groups that've been around since the late 90s, not a lot.
BEER...GOOD!
I will never forget that Newgrounds flash from back in the day.

He WAS the "vocalist" on the first album, Kill 'Em All, way back in 1985 or thereabout. Needless to say, that was Metallica's best, and it's been downhill from there. Like many other great bands, after the 80's they just put out complete rubbish. Some even started this before the 80's were over, like AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest...
Justin Timberlake, no...no, not rock, not band, go away.
