Hey, look at that, it's a new Metal Slug. Who knew? I didn't, because if I had, I would have pre-ordered it in Japan, where doing so apparently nets you the sweet pre-order bonus of a pair of underwear. This new PSP title features seven stages of militar ... wait, underwear? What?
Apparently so. SNK says quantities are limited as well, so if you plan to import this, you may want to specify that you're looking for a copy that comes with a free set of drawls. Anyway, Metal Slug XX includes seven stages, the combat school mini mission feature that was seen in Metal Slug 7, and the triumphant return of KOF characters Ralf and Clark.
SNK says the game will fully utilize the PSP hardware to make for gorgeous 2D visuals, and features ad-hoc play this time around for 2-player co-op. New Metal Slug action is always good news to me. The game hits Japan on December 23rd at 5,040 Yen. No word yet on a US release, but if it hits PSN digitally it'll be a cinch to get either way, albeit without the bonus underwear.
Also no word on whether the underwear are the magical kind that you can take off without removing your pants like the POWs in the game. Check out a trailer for Metal SLug XX after the jump and hit the gallery for some screens.
So "the game will fully utilize the PSP hardware" means only using a portion of the screen? LAME! I hate when games are not properly formatted for the platforms which they appear on.
As long as they keep on rehashing Metal Slug games using the same old (but beautiful) sprites, I will keep on playing them. But what they really need to do is give Metal Slug the KoF XII treatment and create brand new high resolution artwork. And if they we're going to go to all the trouble of creating new art they would have to make sure the game was exceptional. And it would look beautiful too.
Well, it's a port of the DS version (they didn't even bothered to change the aspect ratio of the game), but this version will be much superior for having co-op multiplayer, which are the most fun about the Metal Slug series IMO.
Since I consider the DS version broken (simply for not having multiplayer), I really hope SNKP port this new version back to the DS.
The theory that these games are still made on the original hardware sounds pretty plausible to me. The engine and sprites have never undergone any sort of change that'd indicate using a newer, beefier engine. There always seems to be unintentional slowdown too. I'm guessing I'll never see a Metal Slug HD.

Well, they got the "beautiful" part down...
My boxers have a Rocket Launcher in them, now that I think about it.
