Metal Slug 3 on XBLA this Wednesday photo

Just one Xbox Live Arcade release is scheduled for next week, but it's a good one: Metal Slug 3 (800 Microsoft Points).

Before you say anything about the price, remember that Metal Slug 3 was also released as a stand-alone game for the original Xbox, so while the Live Arcade port might not be as cheap as other 2D games that have been ported to the service like Sonic the Hedgehog, it's not a complete rip-off.

If you've never played any of the Metal Slug games before, then what's wrong with you? The series has always been extremely fun and bizarre. For instance, when you come into contact with another zombie in Metal Slug 3, your character becomes undead and can vomit a river of blood across the entire screen. Awesome, huh?

The XBLA version of Metal Slug 3 will be online-enabled so you and a friend can help each other tackle the game's huge bosses over Xbox Live. Does that sound like a good deal or are you going to pass on this one, Dtoiders?

Only if you can push the back button to add quarters. Never could get away from this machine without putting at least five bucks in.

Just get a subscirption to GameTap, people.

They have ALL (or what I think it all) the Metal Slug games and you could play 'em (plus a bajilliono others) for a month for about the same price as that SINGLE game.

Seriously, I signed up a week ago and I can't say enough good things about it.

hmm...the 2 player online co-op almost makes it worth it. I already have the game for everything but my right shoe, not to mention the complete anthology on the PSP, but I'll wait and see how the online co-op handles.

I'm really discovering the dangers of Microsoft "funny munny" points. I spent what, Lord knows how many points, on Rock Band downloads.

80+160+440=680 points.

I have no idea how much cash that is.

This is gonna be a problem.

DinnerTime:

You can easily get all Metal Slug games via emulation, which has a price tag of $0, while its not exactly legal, any person who knows how to use the internet wouldn't go with Gametap and would know that its hard to get caught(Though if you want to be the good boy go ahead but I mean come on, most of the games gamers download are fairly old and either the company's dead or you can just buy games that they're shelling out on new consoles, which is what they'd want anyway).

Thats all Gametap really is, emulation you pay for. The problem with Gametap though IS the price tag and the fact that they have to get the rights to allow you to buy these certain games from them. Tell me, how many GBA games are on there? Can you play Street Fighter 3? Exactly.

Bengo,

Actually, yes, you CAN play Street Fighter 3 on it. It was just added and I played it yesterday. LOTS of Capcom fighting games are on it.

I payed $60 for a YEAR of GameTap and believe me, I've downloaded old roms and emulators before and GameTap makes EVERYTHING easier and safer. Easier to find, easier to download, and you don't have to worry about bad/corupt/virus files since most pirate sites are crap and very unreliable.

Personally though, I think it's well worth the $60 for the thousand games, the original content (ie. Sam & Max), and the new games that I don't have to pay ANYTHING more above the monthly fee to play (Overlord, Jericho, etc).

And yes, I "know how to use the internet," but excuse me for chosing convienience and community over spotty emulation. In fact, I know how to use the internet SO WELL that I could download all of my PSP, GBA and PS2 games FOR FREE instead of buying them. Screw the developers and their hard work!

Ok, this game has been on the NeoGeo, GBA, PS2, Xbox and has been featured in the Anthology for the Wii, PSP and PS2. Now it's coming for the 360. Not counting the arcade version, that 8 times this game has been put out. I'm sorry but 10 bucks is too much for a game that has been ported 8 times now. I doubt we will see any enhanced graphics or any extras other than some achievements tacked on to really make it worth being ported again. If M$ is really that intent on rehashing older arcade games, lets see some that haven't taken a trip around almost every system. This should be a $5 game at the most. Just my opinion.

goodness. MS3 is pretty much impossible to beat near the end. Though I prefer X, I just don't understand why they didn't just release a Metal Slug Anthology on the arcade. Just 3? I wouldn't mind all 6 for a download.

I have the Xbox version, and I can emulate this easily, but I'll support anything SNK wants to put out on XBLA just to show interest. Maybe we'll get Samurai Shodown 2 eventually, like many of us have been waiting patiently for.

Online co-op and achievements make it worth the 800 points for me. It's the best game in the series.

Everything after Metal Slug 3 was a serious letdown. 4 was okay but the first signs of laziness started to creep in. The first 4 (X included) are just works of brilliance.

Metal Slug 3 is a lot of fun and I have a friend across the country that I like playing co-op games with. I wouldn't mind throwing down $10 so we can play this game together like we used to.

Now, if Live were actually working, that sort of magical experience might actually be possible.

I agree after MSX, the series was bleh at best. But that's cause SNK Playmore took over. where all things SNK declined.

Hopefully they remember to add the hit detection. the Wii version (i unno if others were the same.) phailed to have hit detection. I think only the 2nd boss had actual hit detection.
TheStripe's Avatar
TheStripe at 12/29/2007 19:12
Man, ten bucks is a deal, compared to what the series has pulled from my pockets in quarters at movie theaters and student unions. I sorta wavered on getting the Wii anthology, how do those of you that own it feel about it? I'll probably get this anyway.

@shin - "the Wii version phailed to have hit detection"

Wha? Explain.
The-Excel's Avatar
The-Excel at 12/29/2007 19:14
I think he's talking about hit flash. I hated how the Wii version of the Anthology lacked it so much that I traded it in and got the PS2 version instead and never regretted it.

Also, sprite filtering still sucks.

DinnertimeNinja:

Anybody with any common sense would know how to download roms/emulators safely, its called AVG and Spybot, read into it.

You think you're supporting the developers even though you just said "the original content (ie. Sam & Max), and the new games that I don't have to pay ANYTHING more above the monthly fee to play (Overlord, Jericho, etc) "? Not only this but you can't exactly keep the games forever can you? You have to keep forwarding money to them while I just go to the store and buy a copy and get to keep it forever.

God forbid I or anybody else download old games where the companies have either moved on from those games or have died out as a whole.
DinnertimeNinja's Avatar
DinnertimeNinja at 12/30/2007 00:15
Banjo,

My god, guy. I actually HAVE AVG and Spybot already and they've helped me out of many a jam thanks to questionable downloads.

And yes, I AM supporting the developers through supporting Gametap. Gametap makes monetary deals with the companies to offer their games on Gametap. People like me come along and PAY MONEY to allow Gametap to keep existing and keep paying developers to use their games. How do you not understand this?

Also, I would have never bought Overlord and Jericho in the first place so why the hell would I care if I didn't get to keep them. I play them, I beat them. End of story. Even if they're only on the service for a month (which is unlikely), I STILL get all those games for about the cost of renting ONE game from a B&M store and maybe a couple of games from something like Gamefly.

Go ahead, go out and buy Overlord, Jericho, and whatever else to keep as long as you like. I just payed $5 to play them and whatever the hell else I want to play for a month. More than enough time to beat 'em and delete 'em.

Oh, and if you can find me another good place to play TwinkleStar Sprites and Super Gem Fighter online against dozens of people at any given time through a damn good online service then step up and tell us all.

And the online matches are so bad with Kawaks that it's like playing a flip-book so you're going to have to do a hell of a lot better than that.

Lasty, I couldn't care less if you download older, hard to find games for yourself. I STILL do it (Monkey Island is one of my favorite series of all time and Lucas Arts REFUSES to make me an anniversary pack), but that doesn't mean I'm going to illegally download ALL the games I ever want just because I can.

What, did Gametap kill your parents or something?
