Metal Gear Solid: the Essential Collection photo

Konami sends word that new Metal Gear game collection is on its way to prepare you for the Metal Gear Solid 4 release.

The Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection is coming to the PlayStation 2. It contains the original Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation as well as directors cuts of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 in a commemorative package with artwork by renowned MGS artist Yoji Shinkawa.

"Since its inception, the Metal Gear Solid franchise has been one of the most successful game series in the history of video games, receiving worldwide recognition and praise," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment Inc. "Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection represents a great value for gamers, bringing together three must-have classic titles which pioneered the stealth action genre."

I don't know that this collection is "essential" to any MGS fan. I'd guess that most of them already have these titles. If not, though, the price of $29.99 for this collection breaks down to $10 a game. Not bad, right?

Nothing against this collection, but I'd recommend the Gamecube remake Twin Snakes, which looks great on the Wii in 480p, instead. Between this and a $10 copy of MGS3, you'd be set.

This is a great value for these games, and anyone interested in MGS4 should pick this up, because believe me without playing MGS1&2 you will be lost. But I agree with you Dale for anyone who owns a Wii/Gamecube Twin Snakes is a must. Not only does it look amazing compared to the original, but the game mechanics were changed to match MGS2. It makes the game easier, and IMO a lot more fun to play.

It's a good and fair deal and it's great for those that haven't played the original in all it's 32-bit glory.

Twin Snakes was awesome, but sometimes you can't accept substitutes, even superior ones. Nostalgia FTW.

Is there still a way to do the memory card thing with Pyscho Mantis on my PS3? That's all I need to know.

The overrated collection would be a much better title for these, MGS1 for the PS1 is the best of them all, MGS2 is garbage and MGS3 is mediocre plus all 3 games have incredibly dated stealth mechanics at this point.

And Twin Snakes is horrid, those ridiculous cutscenes just killed the enjoyment that the original MGS had, plus the lack of accents.

@Yojimbo

The only real difference in what we're getting and what they have there is the Saga of Metal Gear DVD which is a timeline and interviews, The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 which is eh and it comes with Portable Ops for the PSP.

Oh. And a pretty case.

Not much of a difference.

Oh. And Dale, Come on man. Twin Snakes is awful. Those stupid Matrix cutscenes really did mess the feel of the game up.

@ArrestedDeveloper: I wouldn't waste my breath, man. He just hates on everything because he thinks it's cool. Comes across sounding like a total douchebag.

I guess I'm the special kind of MGS dork that actually liked the original over the Twin Snakes version. The voice acting was more enjoyable with the accents missing from the Twin Snakes, and the cut scenes were kept somewhat in the realm of reality(no cruise-missile platforming). Also, Twin Snakes seemed considerably easier with MGS 2's control scheme. Oh well, to each their own.

I'm ashamed to say it, but I've never played a MGS game before. Considering I have a PS3 and MSG4 is supposed to be one of the biggest releases on the PS3 this year, I'll probably be getting this collection. Or the Twin Snakes/MSG3 combo. I've always been interested in playing the series to see what all the fuss is about.

Kyousuke hates 99% of all games ever made, I thought you people were used to ignoring him by now?

Though honestly, I'd have to agree, mostly on that MGS3 plays like ABSOLUTE SHIT. Ironically because they upgraded the AI beyond seeing five feet in front of their own face, yet the gameplay mechanics were still stuck in the klunky past. Even with the free camera for Subsistence, it was still retarded. However the story, boss fights, and general cool stuff you can do in the game still makes up for it. Enough to play it anyways. Barely.

Still, even though I have all these games except the PS2 version of Substance, for the price, I'd get it just to have a single case for them all.

Twin snakes is awesome but why did they replace Greg Eagles voice with Rob Paulsen as Grey Fox? Eagles has a badass voice and suited it really well while I know Paulsen as a children's TV show voice actor (check his IMDB, PERFECT FOR THE ROLE). It really ruined part of the experience casting this guy with such a shallow voice. They still used Eagles for Anderson which made even less sense to me. I'd really love to find out what caused this decision.

Now Mr. North, though I agree with you this may not be "essential"...

Please show me where I can get MGS3: Subsistence for only $10.

Hell on Amazon the lowest price for a disc only copy is more than the price of this entire set.

Pretty good deal if you ask me.

I own MGS1 and TTS and I have to say that I thought MGS1 PS1 was superior. Didn't like the over the top nature of TTS cutscenes, screamed DMC3 at me, and missed Naomi's British accent. The Essential Collection is cool though, especially since Subsistence and Substance are out of print.

I have to agree with everyone who said Twin Snakes is inferior. The cut scenes felt out of pace and after playing the PS1 version the change in voices really annoyed me; however, I'm sure people who played TS first look at it the other way around.

It's a pretty good deal for all three games, I just wish it came with the extras of the Japanese collection.

Twin Snakes was meh compared to the original.

Also, you're forgetting to remind people that this also contains the original two games. And considering that Metal Gear 2 is my favorite game of all time, that's rather important.

Twin Snakes was way too damn easy.

I have to admit I enjoyed the crazy Matrix-like cutscenes, but only for the 'WOW' factor.

To really get in the mood, I'd much rather play the original.

Oh, and who here is purchasing the collection despite owning the original copies of each game included? *raises hand*

For anyone who is trying to decide between the original MGS and the Twin Snakes remake, go with the original. You can't go wrong with one of the best games ever made, and some of its original charm is lost with the remake.

But this is only if you can play one of them, if you can play both.

Yeah, I don't think you can even play these games on most PS3's.

Bummer.

As for the MGS vs TS debate, I for one preferred Twin Snakes to the original. That's probably not the most informed opinion, as I hated the original with a passion and refused to play it. Twin Snakes was at least tolerable due to the improved controls and graphics. But even then the game was a chore.

All Metal Gear games are pretty painful to play, yet I've bought each and every one of them. That's the true genius of Kojima. Story.

The Metal Gear Solid series out performs even the great Phoenix Wright trilogy in the "I hate playing this game, but I love the story too much to stop" category.

If you claim to have never felt this way about a Metal Gear Solid game, you're a liar.

@crane0102: Wow, aside from being seemingly functionally illiterate, you're fluent in the ways of ignorance as well... and did you contradict yourself by claiming the next-gen systems relegated the PS2 to obscurity, then turn around and agree with the person you're ignorantly flaming by saying there aren't good games on those same systems?

Moving on,
I have to say that I'll definitely pick this up (and put it down right next to my PS2-DMC: 5th Anniversary box-set), even though I already have Twin Snakes, MGS2:Substance, and MGS3: Subsistence for the PS version of the original game, and the nice artwork =).
Seeing as how they're releasing Director-Cut versions of the 2nd and 3rd game, I really think the original should be the expanded version that was released in Japan as MGS: Integral, including VR missions, extra difficulties, and a first-person view mode. That, in my opinion, would clearly be the "essential" box-set for any MGS fan.

I want to play through these games but i've never ever had a ps1, ps2 or ps3 mainly due to the controller, but after trying the slightly modified ps3 controller :D i like a lot. I don't know what they did (don't tell me just let me live in ignorance) but they did the right thing, and its so light which really improves the feel of it. I tried playing the original on my pc but it doesn't let me change resolution, i could put up with that but the constant crashing...that makes me a sad panda. Its disapointing considering the time i played was remarkably fun.
