Metal Gear Solid RISING could spawn a new series photo

Hideo Kojima is intent on Wesleying Raiden as much as possible, and it appears that Metal Gear Solid RISING may see him succeed. The game looks to be incredibly badass, and Konami is excited enough about it that there may be an entirely new franchise bearing the RISING name.

"MGS Rising is not a side story. We're aiming for two Metal Gear Solids, making a series out of another standard," explains producer Shigenobu Matsuyama.

RISING is going to tell us what happened to Raiden between Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4. It's all about Raiden because the team had imagined a game where you could "cut anything" and the character was already known for wielding a katana. Either way, the thing looks boss and I want it.

I think they should keep it as a spin-off since Metal Gear was never about fucking your enemies in the face with katana's to begin with. But then again I might be completely caught by suprise and enjoy the hell out of it anyway.

With Move support? Even more badass if so.

I hope this retains the same twisted storyline. As I didn't enjoy metal gears gameplay, but the story was satisfyingly complex.
Although. The time slowdown we have seen could be linked to hours of future fun, dissecting humans in elaborate ways.
I think I'll be buying for that mechanic alone no matter what reviews tell me.

Here's to hoping there's a really fat enemy in the game .

MGS4 was one of the first games I ever played on PS3, it was also the first MGS I ever played. I'm not sure if if MGS4 was just lackluster compared to the other installments in the MGS series or if it's just me. It left a less than impressed feeling with me, and I can't really get excited about MGS.

The best games of the bunch were Metal Gear Solid and Snake Eater, in my opinion. You may want to try one of those. I'd suggest the first.

I'm hoping they change the title to just "metal gear rising" without the solid, because rising just isn't MGS, it needs stealth to be a true MGS.

@WoodButcher -- MGS4 was definitely my least favorite of the series. It did a lot things very right, but it was also a major letdown in some other key areas.

I agree with HEL105; MGS1 and MGS3 are definitely the best of the series. (I'd give 3 a slight edge.)

On-topic, the E3 footage had me up for anything. Cutting stuff up looked ridiculously fun. But I do hope they keep the stealth based series alive, as well. Don't just abandon the original kind of gameplay, like Capcom did with Resident Evil. I liked RE5, but it felt like a completely different franchise.

Im down for Rising but seeing as this is about raiden i hope a future game will go more into the story Of Frank Jeager. (gray fox)

I mean if you open the door to badass cyborg ninja characters i wouldnt mind that.

If it's going to be it's own series, why not call it Metal Gear Rising. I don't get why every single Metal Gear game keeps the name Solid these days.

I see long, long cutscenes for this game. Probably be another one of those play through it once and you're done with it kind of game.

MGS was good for it's time, but it's aged horribly, at least to me.

It makes sense. Metal Gear Solid was actually a spin off from the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear2: solid snake. In Metal Gear Solid, 'solid' in the title was referring to Solid snake. It is interesting to see 'solid' in the title for Metal Gear Solid: Rising. It might hint to solid snake actually appearing in this game.

From what I've seen, Rising just doesn't do anything for me. I like slow, smart stealth in my MGS, and even if Rising is all about the action, being able to "cut as you will" just seems like a gimmick.

On a technical level, it's impressive, but I don't see how it improves on the genre. Not to mention I'm not looking forward to another overly-convoluted mess of a plot. Just give me a remake of Metal Gear (before it was "Solid") already...

Ahhh - people and their explanations of what titles mean. Even with so little we know about the game, people are already trying to define Rising.

Can we just let the people making the games decide what these games are?

I loved MGS for the PS1 and liked very much the second. Snake Eater I hated, mainly because of the hype. When I played I got frustrated about the things I couldn't do anymore and the things the developers had me to do (like camouflage). The game got even worse when I realized everyone loved such a frustrating game.

Last year I bought a PSP. I tried Portable Ops and the control scheme made me furious. I tried to grab a guy and he heard me. Maybe Big Boss tickled him. What I really wanted to do was to break his neck and NOT use the f**** gun. I ended using the gun and turned off the PSP.

Make sense, MGS is a huge property - Kojima ending Snake and trying to leave the IP doesn't mean it's going to die. Lets the up and coming at Kojima productions take reign on the series/other character while Kojima gets his hands into other IP's. Good luck to both Rising and whatever Kojima does in the meantime.

I can't wait for this game. I'm a huge Metal Gear game collector and I'm hoping for the usual bad ass collectors edition.

Even though it doesn't look like your typical Metal Gear game, it's nice they are going further into the story of Raiden (even though I'm not a huge fan of Raiden, Son's of Liberty was my least favorite Metal Gear game).

It's also awesome that 360 only user's will finally get a Metal Gear for this gen. They can finally have fun with what PS3 owner's have had for a few years now.

Sounds to me like you should be picking up Metal Gear Solid off the PlayStation Network. It's not only mine but most peoples favourites.

For most fans of the series MGS4 is considered good because it tries to tie up story elements from the previous games in the series and while the game is impressive on it's own, for someone who'd never played the others it'd be literally like watching Just "Return Of The Jedi" by itself without the gaps filled in.

Oh and all the people complaining about MGS4, if you played it before the other games, there is no way you could possibly appreciate it.

It relies heavily on the fact that you're actually a fan of the series for you to actually get it in any facet.

Great. Now let's hope this one will actually have a good story.

I still laugh when people say they cried during MGS4, or MGS4 is somehow a pinnacle of fantastic storytelling. It was utter shit.

Not to be a snob. But the 'Solid' in Metal Gear Solid does not refer to Solid Snake. It is a reference to the series going into 3D environments. The old Metal Gear games were, of course, 2D and thus the 'Solid' added onto the title for the PS1 and later games.

Since Rising is still very much a 3D environment the use of 'Solid' is still appropriate. Granted, Rising should be the new addition and become its own series to learn about Raiden. It doesn't seem right to make a MGS5 after wrapping everything up with MGS4.

Tvtropes link? No!

Also, really? A game publisher is going to whore out a property? How surprising! Actually, this probably explains why not Kojima introduced it at E3: so the fanboys can say, "Well, whatsisname is working on Metal Gear Rising 2: Mostly Erect and he introduced the first one at E3!"

Snake's Revenge for the NES was unofficial, it was made by Ultra games.

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for the MSX2 was made by Kojima and Konami.

Maybe I just misread what you typed? lol

This needs to be a one-shot. Show us what happened to Raiden, and that's it. Don't ruin the series.

I completely agree with schmix -- This game needs Move support. If they're putting Kinect support in there (wtf?), then it would do AWESOME with the Move remote.

How could they ruin a series with a story as outlandish and ridiculous as MGS? I think they'd have a hard time coming up with something so crazy that it was actually too much, even for the MGS universe.

I don't know that Raiden qualifies as a proper Wesley anymore (to me anyway). I definitely was not a fan of his at first, but once I understood the purpose of his role in MGS2 and thoroughly enjoyed his role in MGS4, I've grown to like the character. He's probably a more honest extension of the player than any other character in the series, which has to count for something. Anyway, looking forward to this.

@brimtastic If anything, it would indicate the story arc which centers around the Patriots' rule 'till the very end of MGS4.

But yeah, as much as Solid means "3D", it's better to be replaced by a number or a new word because I don't want it's naming to be as comparable as Final Fantasy's.

@pedrovay2003 Even so the idea of playing as a superhuman badass after all these years is amazing, I'd have to agree on that aspect...unless you imply the Rising subtitle to previous characters in the series.

@Drakengard I still look at Solid as Snake's since, as much as he's been the main character in two games, is the center of the Solid series. It would also be a good indication of which major story arc is which since the Patriots (or their sowed seeds) were the center perpetrators behind everything what was going on. Since Rising is taking place between MGS2 and 4, it's technically correct to keep the Solid.
