Konami has announced that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker has gotten a firm North American street date -- May 25, 2010.
The title is the direct sequel to the popular Metal Gear Solid 3, putting players in control of Naked Snake. David Daniels, Director of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment believes the title has "serious sales potential." He also adds that Kojima has "pushed the limits of the PSP system." Sounds serious.
Designer/director/writer Hideo Kojima thinks the game will make you go out and buy a PSP. Well, will it?

I don't know how everyone seems to forget that game, it's a great game
The question is: Will Peace Walker move me to buy a new model with PS3 Controller connectivity and video-out?
The demo played much more like console iterations of the series than Portable Ops did. I didn't get a real "Portable Ops" feel from it. It's different of course, but no more different than any one MGS game has been from another, and the camera control leaves a little to be desired (but not nearly as much as Portable Ops did).
I'd say it's going to be about the best MGS experience you'll get on a PSP, short of having Metal Gear Solid from the PSOne Classics collection loaded on there.
Thanks to my cousin for giving me a PSP =D
That sounds promising. I'm a massive Metal Gear fan, but I stopped playing Portable Ops halfway through. I know a lot of people loved it, but the recruitment stuff and the way the levels weren't really connected just put me off.
They better not slip up and let this get leaked online like 2 months before release or bye bye PW sales.
@Linuxguy
I haven't! But you already knew that.
Unlike Portable Ops, the mission areas appear to be broken up into multiple areas and pathways, in the traditional MGS format. You still deploy to regions, but the composition of the maps is in a more spaced out, multi-area format in which you are generally free to move from one area to the next.
The aiming system is similar to Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, if you've ever played it, and maintains the third-person perspective system used in MGS4. Crouch-walking essentially replaces crawling, while going prone and pressing against walls have lost the ability to move, but grant high bonuses to camouflage level. The weapon selection and item selection in-mission is also different than Portable Ops, allowing for more than just 4 items. CQC has changed severely, limiting the player's moves essentially to grab, throw, and choke, but CQC is now "chainable" to multiple enemies. Meaning that when surrounded, you can execute what amounts to a CQC "combo" on enemies in close proximity.
All in all, it "feels" much more like a traditional Metal Gear than Portable Ops did, not that it was a bad game by any means.
(just kidding)
(And find it to be incredibly useful!)
Peace Walker is the direct sequel to Portable Ops. It fills in the gap from the early 70's to the 80's.
People's complaints about the recruiting system forget one thing: it's actually key to the plot: it's the main reason Big Boss HAS a PMC army to begin with in Peace Walker.
Also, I played the Japanese demo version of PW--and honestly, those had to be some of the most convoluted controls I've ever had for a PSP game. That's not easy for me to say, rest assured. *points to name*
The fact that going prone cannot be maintained without holding a button down is bizarre; all the moreso that you can't move while flat either anymore. Also, aiming with the four symbol buttons is convoluted and frustrating, not to mention a waste of controls.
Portable Ops controls worked well for the game, given it's limited options.
