Metal Gear Solid 4's intro to blow your minds: Also to be outsourced photo

Everybody knows that Hideo Kojima, genius that he is, shows signs of a mind that exists in another reality. Now there are promises that his latest baby, Metal Gear Solid 4, will have an intro that has never been attempted before and will never be attempted again. Knowing Kojima-san, that could mean anything, including our collective deaths.

In a recent interview, MGS4 assistant producer Ryan Payton had this to say:

we're working with a studio who is producing the opening movie for the game. We're doing it with a very untraditional studio here in LA. I think that the opening movie and the ending of the game are going to be the two talks of the town. The opening movie is something that has never been attempted, and will never be attempted again. It's something that could only come out of Hideo's mind.

There are many things that could only come out of Hideo's mind, and in all fairness, a good few of them are absolutely terrifying. Whatever may happen, however, it cannot be denied that this is a most curious development indeed. The outsourcing alone is something I would consider quite unexpected, and it seems that the introduction and ending to Guns of the Patriots is going to be spectacular.

Of course, what could this mysterious introduction be? Considering the ominous promises made by Payton, I can only assume that it involves some form of human sacrifice. Perhaps in order to make the game work, you have to find and slaughter a baby and feed your PS3 its blood. In fact, I'm certain that's what is going to happen. What about you?

[Thanks to Justin]

It plays a 4-minute ad for Petal Rear Squalid Door, an XBox 360 exclusive, and then breaks your PS3.

So, its gonna be some stupid thing that makes no sense, but people will still say its the great and amazing and those of us who don't understand it just don't "get" MGS.

Has anyone ever called Kojima and the MGS series overrated? Because I would like to take that opportunity now, and, if I am the first, I would also like to add "ZERO!"

It will require you to take the dualshock3 controller and sit on it for the entire duration of the opening sequence. If you don't have one the monkey will laugh at you and you'll be forced to go buy one if you want to play the game.

If this actually has a feature length, HD intro the blu-ray vs dvd fanwars will a splode. Kojima has done something totally new with every one of the MGS games so I really wouldn't put it past him to try something that mind blowing. Why the outsourcing though?

Try as I might, I can never get into these games. Part of the reason is the long, drawn-out cut scenes, which I find to be both tedious and preachy.

In all honesty, it will probably be a 20-45 minute intro. Hideo does love his crazy long cutscenes

I definitely think it could be the feature length film, but at the end Hideo comes on screen, removes his pants, and skeets in your face. And you literally get hit in the face with his seamen. That's how good it's going to be.

There was a quote from Kojima around TGS'06 saying that it had people jumping out of their seats when he threw the idea out there in a meeting, so it's got to be something pretty impressive.
Could be a game-within-a-game, like the freaky dream sequence you got in MGS3 if you saved and reset the game when you were in jail. If I remember right, that was worked on by a separate team, so this could be summat similar.

I can't wait.

Oh, new idea: you have to play every boss battle from the last three games again as a series of flashbacks, and if you die more than twice the game ruins the ending for you then melts the disc. I think I've got it for reals this time.

i agree with king, something really fucking long since they have bluray, maybe an hour. If so, it better be damn exciting and entertaining. I have limited time to play, don't want to wait an hour. 20 minutes should be the sweet spot, maybe 30 max. either way, this shit will rule

@Brainderailment,

They did say they'd be implementing that throughout the game (I guess in place of the 'press R1 to stare at EVA's tits' feature from 3's cutscenes), but it just doesn't seem to fit in as something that even the most enthusiastic PR guy would say has never been done, and will never be done again (and Ryan Payton is usually pretty conservative with the stuff he comes out with about the game).

As evidenced by the fact I've got four comments in when I usually just lurk around with my collar turned up, I can't fucking wait for this.

The outsourcing is not that new or unusual. The intro for MGS3 was created/directed by Prologue (LA based). And they have already mentioned some time ago that the intro and logo for MGS4 would be done by Logan (also based in LA).

I googled for clarification (I have no idea where I initially read about it) and found this thread in the official European/German Playstation forums. Post #69 has a summary of TGS06 that mentions the Logan outsourcing. The original (and linked) source seems to be this.

If this truly is Kojima's last (canon) MGS game, he can really do whatever he wants with it. This intro and the resulting game are going to be freaky as hell, and people are going to buy it. If they don't like it, tough shit, they bought it, and there would be no negative repercussions for future MGS games, because the series would be finished.

I see 'feature length' as realistic, but I also see breaking the 4th wall in a way he's never done as a major, major part of the game. Who knows, bue tooth interactivity, playstation eye stuff, it could really be anything.

Opens with a twist... you are Marty McFly!

OR

The intro opens up with a picture of the earth, and lists the time as being 80,000,000,000 B.C. You will spin the controller horizontally, and based on the velocity, the earth will spin and take you that far forward in time... you could play the game in ancient pre-historic eras, or in super futuristic eras. The palate swaps will be done dynamically by downloading them while the earth spins from the internet to your hard drive. Imagine raptors piloting MG: Rexes, or enemy soldier amoebas, or soldiers in knight's armor! IMAGINE!

qwerty said - "I wouldn't be surprised if it interacted with your cell phone or something. a char on screen calls you and you have to answer it or something."

That sounds like the kind of innovative surprise twist that Kojima would come up with. Something like, it'd send you a text message, and it wouldn't move forward until you text them back, or it texts you a password or door code... almost like that part where you have to check the case in MGS1.

Or maybe you start the game as Otacon and you have to use the web browser in the PS3 to get emails about leads on new Metal Gear activity. They could have a ton of different locations with NPCs, and you could either get the info, or just play through each location in a trial and error deal.

Ok people, lets think about this for a second, Ryan Payton said on his blog that a different company was working on the intro to MGS4, he said that the same company that makes those ipod commercials are the ones working on the intro. He also said that the intro was actually gonna have real people ( well he said both real people and CGI cutscenes ) one of the members that is working on the intro to MGS4 said that it takes place in the future. Ok so heres my theory, i think that the intro to MGS4 might contain the trailer to the Metal Gear Solid Movie. Think about guys, why would Konami have another company thats involved in making commercial do the intro to MGS4? not only that but they said real people, they also said it takes place in the future. that sounds about right, something thats never been done before and probably never will again. It makes sense, the world premier of the Metal Gear Solid Movie for the first time ever, on the MGS4 game. Thats my theory, and im pretty sure thats what is going to be.
