Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Finally, after delays and gallons of tears from fanboys, Metal Gear Solid 4 finally has a release date. The game will be out this year between April and June but we're hearing that the game actually has a firm date of June 12th. Either way, the game is only just a few more months away.

Sony will also be releasing a PS3 bundle coinciding with MGS 4. The bundle will consist of MGS 4, a 80GB PS3 and the DualShock 3 controller (which now also has a firm release date). The bundle will retails for $499.99.

Finally, those who have preordered the game will be able to get into the beta of Metal Gear Online in late April.

The bundle is an extremely smart decision. A lot of people have been waiting to buy a PS3 just for Metal Gear Solid 4. Sony has made it simple and the price of the bundle is a steal. It's also a little funny to see that they've brought back the 80GB model after the recent discontinuation of it.

Alright fanboys, lets hear it. Is Sony going to finally kick some ass this year thanks to Metal Gear Solid?

I don't know about kick ass, but certainly reclaim some ground that they've managed to squander poorly over the last couple years.

I wonder if this SKU includes backwards compatibility, if so I may soon be the owner of a PS3

I'm not angry at my $400 purchase of the 80 gb PS3 in december. But I will pick up a 2nd controller with the DS3 release. But will I get MGS? The games always kicked my ass, so who knows

They picked a perfect time too. They'll have virtually no competition for gamer dollars near the summer.

Unless there is another huge release around that time that I forgot about?

MGS was good, the others in the series weren't.

@casual

I think NG2 is coming out near that timeframe but as much as I love violent ninja action I don't know if it'll have the same killer app appeal as MGS4.

Gotta spend my government tax return on something. I may have just found those things. I was looking for an excuse to pickup a PS3 and PSP. With PS3 being the only system with a Blu-Ray drive and the PSP's interconnectivity with it, i.e. playing games on the go, I can't really come up with a good reason not to own them now.

If this has backwards compatibility, Sony will be raping my tax return this year. $200 for the GoW PSP, $500 for this, hell, I might even make my HDTV purchase a Sony brand. Probably not though.

Everyone just needs to wait until I buy the MGS4 PS3 combo. Moments after I buy it there will be an announcement that MGS4 is coming to the 360.

It is very likely that I will buy this combo. What else is money for if I don't spend it?

From PS blog for those interested in bundle and backwards compat.

Answer :
Yes, similar to the Motorstorm bundle, the new MGS4 bundle features an 80GB PS3 with some PS2 backwards compatibility.

While normally the game would surely move some PS3s, this changes everything. That's a good deal, and people like saving money, especially when they're getting a top tier game to boot. This is definitely gonna be a big help for Sony.

..Man the 360 fans are comming out of the wood work for this game,. Christ what is so aweful about having to buy a system for a game ?

I got my 360 knowing that halo 3 was going to come out on it. I didnt wait by the side of my ps3 trolling on message borards passing rumors and wishing up and down that it was on the ps3.

With gaming dev costs these days, and sony being more giving with its contacts then M$ is (fucking ownership rights nazis) It wouldnt shock me to see this game out on the 360 a year later down the road, after sony has made all they will on it. But there is no way in hell that it will happen before xmas this year.

And like wise, I expect ninja gaiden 2 on the ps3 in the future, with all its dl content and after all the hype has toned down for it.

I work at a best buy and i asked our sony rep why the 80 GB were discontinued in the first place and she said that they were never discontinued they had just simply ran out of them. She said the only thing they were discontinuing was the bundle with motorstorm in it. So i assume the plan was to switch it from motorstorm it MGS4.

This is it, this is what's going to make me buy a PS3.
And for everyone concerned about the 80 gig model's backwards compatibility, it is backwards compatible with.. I believe the official number was 72% of PS2 games.
Check out http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus to see if the games you have are on the compatibility list.

Well I got the 360 and the Wii already and I would like to get a Bluray player so by the time this comes to Australia, the PS3 will be cheaper anyway so I think I might get this. I liked the other Metal Gear Solid games (except that crap Ac!d one on on the PSP) so I will get this for shizzle
Highflyer's Avatar
Highflyer at 02/26/2008 16:36
Well, I hope this can finally put the whole "MGS4 coming to the 360" rumors to rest. Sony is essentially paying Konami for each and every game they put in the bundle.

Granted Sony is probably getting the game a little cheaper then $60, but still. What an incentive for Konami to keep the game exclusively on the PS3.

While I'm sure that the game will eventually come out on the 360, this will probably be what it takes to get me to buy a PS3. Value, 80 gigs, and BC? Hell yeah I want it.

Man the timing really couldn't be better for Sony. With the US government giving out bonus rebate checks in early summer late spring to stimulate the economy this should come as great news for those that were waiting to get a PS3. If you like the Metal Gear series this is a no brainer.
