Metal Gear Solid 4 has 90-minute cut-scenes, requires a 4.6 GB install photo

Think Final Fantasy games have never-ending cut scenes?  Metal Gear Solid 4 is about to put them to shame. According to issue 108 of PSW Magazine, the game is rumored to have some cinematic scenes as long as ninety minutes!  If you've played through previous modern Metal Gear games you're surely used to this -- some sequences in Snake Eater were at least half as long. But 90 minutes?

Perhaps Konami should reconsider their Metal Gear bundle with one that includes a terabyte hard drive, a 30-day supply of popcorn, and a pop-out leather sofa. The good news is that it might be worth it:

MGS4's story is massive. The videogame equivalent of all three Godfather movies on one disc ... As you'd expect, you'll spend a lot of time watching cut-scenes, so if you found previous games' story exposition laborious, then you'd better find yourself a nice cushion and plenty of teabags in readiness for MGS4's. They can be skipped, but you'll be missing out on some of the finely crafted examples of FMV footage anywhere in gaming.

I'm sure someone is shaking and vomiting in Hollywood from the news, as is some gamer out there with a full hard drive. Got five gigs you're not doing anything with?

[Via CVG

At the very least, you won't have to worry about load times for this content: Another source has discovered that MGS4 will force you to install a whopping 4.6 gigs of content onto your hard drive (see gallery below). The forced install trend looks like it's here to stay (to the chuckle of PC gamers everywhere) with games like Haze and Devil May Cry 4 also commanding fat-bottomed HDD footprints.

There is no doubt that this game will be nothing short of a quality production deserving our unborn children and all the hard drive space they will someday have, but I'd like to hear from fans of the franchise: Does 90 minutes sound like a treat or a burden?

o god my pants feel tight....wait did i say that out loud?

seriously if anyone expected anything less than this you are a fool. especially if youve played past mgs games you know kojima has the blood of a classic hollywood director dying to tell a great story and with the tech now he can and with ryan payton as a key member of the crew im pretty sure he saw what a lot of you did if this rumor is true in that people will want the ability to come back to the 90min cut scene later in the day if they so choose.

At least you can pause and skip them.

90 minutes is still pretty excessive in my opinion. The writing, animation, and voice acting had all better be top-notch in order to justify the length.

And people are wondering why this couldn't have also been released on the you-know-what.

I remember playing the last MGS game and thinking, "Gee, I've watched 40 minutes of cut scenes and have only played 20 minutes of the actual game". This is going to be even worse, I'm sure I'll play it down the road. But as of right now I have to give a big "no thanks".

Who here thinks the 90min cut scene is the intro!?

I have no idea how i view this as that's along ass cutscene.

"MOM!!!!!!!!!! I need to save before dinner, it'll be another 84 minutes so fucking chill!

Just to clarify, "cutscene" doesn't necessarily mean "pre-rendered CG". If they use the in-game engine, the space required to pull off a 90 minute interlude doesn't necessarily require obscene amounts of disc storage.

I'm curious if people's comments are based on which console they own if they have only one. There is probably some inherent bias before you even start typing.

Also this game is Kojima's baby. I believe he would make it the way he wants to and not to please everyone, which is impossible anyway, especially now a days. Granted he usually makes gamers, who like those types of games, very happy anyway.

I still can't wait for the game, even with this rumor and no other specific information if its total cutscene time, final cutscene, whatever. Kojima has a vision he wants to share and I for one can't wait to see what he came up with.

or maybe these cutscenes are the ones with the flashback sequences.

I can't wait for this to be honest. I'm sure their will be plenty of game to be had, but a story this massive almost needs 90 minutes of explications/revelations.

I honestly don't know why people still complain about the mandatory installs. They make the games run better, and hard drives for the PS3 are dirt cheap, unlike the 360 hard drives.

The cutscene, on the other hand, sounds a bit huge to me. I love the entire MGS series, but holy crap... Well, we'll see how it turns out.

You know, I've been a MGS fan for a long, long time. But seriously, when I sit down to play a game, I want to play. I have a wife, a house, a job, I don't have 5 hours /day to dedicate to gaming. 90 minute cut scenes? What a waste of time. If I want that, I'll just put in A MOVIE with a halfway decent plot.

I didn't want my first post here to be negative, but you guys do realize that MGS's story isn't really all that great, right? I mean 2 words:

THE PATRIOTS

The Patriots?!??!? the La-Le-Lu-Lei-Lo?!?!? Seriously??? When they had that reveal in MGS2, I almost threw up all over my PS2. A collective consciousness growing in Washington? Seriously?

Worst...Plot...Device...Ever...

Plus, that assumes that anyone in politics in D.C. has brain. Clearly, not the case :P

MGS2 is the reason I now loath long cut scenes. Throughout that whole game I felt like I was playing Dragons Lair and could only do minimal actions to keep the game going. Lame. Thanks Konami for reiterating my hate.

I'm with the others that will be calling shenanigans if you can't save during the cutscenes. I've never even bothered to play through a MGS game before, but I hope they know what they're doing...if you're going to make gamers sit through a 90 minute cutscene, it had better be some legendary, brilliant shit.

As long as cutscene can be paused, I'm okay with it. You never know when nature will call...

I also agree with what B-Radicate said. No popping in the game for a quick 30 to 60 minute session before dinner or bed.

At least you can pause them. Just don't try playing this on a school night. As long as there are only, like, two or three like that, I think we'll all be fine, And the install doesn't bother me at all; you can use that time to replay MGS2 at least.

I'm gonna make a wild guess and say it's probably the ending that super long. Kojima's endings are always super long, and this being the big story-closing finale of the series, I would imagine it would have to have the longest ending of them all.

Well I can say I was expecting some good (and long) cutscenes, but 90 minutes...if the game's playable length is anything like I think it's gonna be then this'll be one enormous game. Forget taking a day off from work, this'll take a week. Also, as others have already stated: cutscenes are pauseable.

But I can say I'm quite excited, I never liked cutscenes in games, until I played Metal Gear, as I felt that they took you too far out of the action, but I always look forward to them in MGS games because they are so epic.

As for anyone that's said Metal Gear games have crappy stories...find a new game. Seriously, the stories in these games are excellent and if you don't agree then you shouldn't be playing them. If you think there are better stories in books then go read those books...it's all opinion so quit dissing on the story.

To those of you who are saying that this is Kojima's baby and he's not making it for us, would you kindly eat a bullet? I mean who the f*ck is he making it for? He expects us to buy the thing, right? Should we, y'know, factor into the equation on some level?

Don't get me wrong, artistic vision has its place in videogames, but the moment videogames become vanity projects is the moment I'll cash in my gamer chips, because developers will have clearly lost touch with what videogames are about.

To my mind, the idea that a game wouldn't be made with its audience in consideration is ludicrous, and runs contrary to what game design ought to be about. That said, I get the feeling that Kojima actually knows his audience very well, and that he's counting on them to eat this game up no matter what crazy shit he does with it. The rest of us will be told that we just don't get it.

90 minutes?! JFC. I'm a huge fan of the fanchise; in fact, what brought me into it the most were it's cinematic qualities. But Snake Eater really tried my patience. My biggest complaint is that MGS partitions its experience between gameplay and story. Wouldn't it be far more next gen for MGS to find entertaining and engaging ways to tell us the story AS WE'RE PLAYING IT? Rather than taking us out of the moment to watch a cinematic or read a fucking novel over the CODEC? That damned, fucking CODEC...

After games like BioShock and Mass Effect - where the story is beautifully told through gameplay - MGS is starting to feel archaic. 90 minutes is too fucking long. I'm here to play a game, not watch mini-movies of Hideo jerking off with his digital cinematography.

for people that whine about the cutscenes in the Metal Gear games, just remember if your being entertained does it really matter if your technically playing the game or not? besides you CAN pause during them :)

also I'm sure they'll be plenty of gameplay to balance it out

@ The Amazing Whatever

I like how people always break it down like that. Someone expresses distaste in something, and so they're whining, rather than expressing their opinions. Fucking brillaint.

That aside, I sure as should would hope that the cut-scenes end up being entertaining, what with some of them being 90 minutes in length.

I don't really have a problem with it, and am in fact kinda interested to see what Kojima makes of that running time. I just think that, well, the idea that it's Kojima's game, and that nobody has a right to complain about it given that is stupid.

Not that you're responsible for perpetuating that nonsense.

I've made you a mediocre sandwich. It looks quite good, but really, next door they serve steak for the same price. Also, there's a big turd on top of the sandwich. Stop complaining. You can always just eat around the turd, or pause eating it, and come back to it later. BUY MY TURD SANDWICH! IT'S ART!

((Yes, I'm prejudiced. I don't like turds.))

From Gamepro.com

"From CVG today comes a pretty wild rumor about Metal Gear Solid 4: the penultimate title in the Solid Snake series will feature rather lengthy cutscenes.

How lengthy? Try 90 minutes. And that's not 90-minutes in total, that's a 90-minute cutscene.

Trouble is, it's not entirely accurate. Will MSG4 have lengthy cutscenes, like the 45-minute one in MGS2? Yes, says GamePro's own Sid Shuman, but nowhere near 90 minutes.

"I've beat the game twice, and am the author of the forthcoming [GamePro] review," Shuman said. "Ninety-minute-long cinemas in MGS4 sounds like an exaggeration. Like the other MGS games, MGS4 definitely has a cinematic quality. And yes, some of the cut-scenes in the game are elaborate and occasionally lengthy. But not a one, to my recollection, even approaches 90 minutes.

"I think it's safe to say that the '90 minutes cinemas' claim is a pretty big exaggeration," he told GamePro News.

Unknown at this time is whether or not the cutscenes, 90-minutes or otherwise, are skippable. UPDATE@1:15 EST: Cut scenes are skippable."

So this rumor's bullshit.

Wow 90 mins is a long time totally no needed and also whoever said that the install was a pain because it takes 20 mins and that we are "babies." It isn't the time thing it is more the fact that now to play a game u need to take a rather large chunk of your HD that is the problem.
