Metal Gear Solid 4 has 90-minute cut-scenes, requires a 4.6 GB install photo

Think Final Fantasy games have never-ending cut scenes?  Metal Gear Solid 4 is about to put them to shame. According to issue 108 of PSW Magazine, the game is rumored to have some cinematic scenes as long as ninety minutes!  If you've played through previous modern Metal Gear games you're surely used to this -- some sequences in Snake Eater were at least half as long. But 90 minutes?

Perhaps Konami should reconsider their Metal Gear bundle with one that includes a terabyte hard drive, a 30-day supply of popcorn, and a pop-out leather sofa. The good news is that it might be worth it:

MGS4's story is massive. The videogame equivalent of all three Godfather movies on one disc ... As you'd expect, you'll spend a lot of time watching cut-scenes, so if you found previous games' story exposition laborious, then you'd better find yourself a nice cushion and plenty of teabags in readiness for MGS4's. They can be skipped, but you'll be missing out on some of the finely crafted examples of FMV footage anywhere in gaming.

I'm sure someone is shaking and vomiting in Hollywood from the news, as is some gamer out there with a full hard drive. Got five gigs you're not doing anything with?

[Via CVG

At the very least, you won't have to worry about load times for this content: Another source has discovered that MGS4 will force you to install a whopping 4.6 gigs of content onto your hard drive (see gallery below). The forced install trend looks like it's here to stay (to the chuckle of PC gamers everywhere) with games like Haze and Devil May Cry 4 also commanding fat-bottomed HDD footprints.

There is no doubt that this game will be nothing short of a quality production deserving our unborn children and all the hard drive space they will someday have, but I'd like to hear from fans of the franchise: Does 90 minutes sound like a treat or a burden?

Treat if this cutscene is the end cinematic that will tie all of the loose ends on this series. Bad if it's anything else.

This sounds terrible, and really kills my cautious optimism for the franchise. Kojima's stories are OK, but nothing special to someone with easy access to literature.

(As posted on Trev's blog):

Wow, beyond the huge install, a 90 minute cut scene would be boring as all hell. How do you f'in plan for that?

"Hey, I'm just gonna play for a half hour or so before dinner... OH SHIT! I reached the end, now I hafta sit here for another hour and a half to 'finish' this shit for real. Grandma's birthday dinner? FUCK grandma's birthday dinner, I have a cutscene I'm still watching, yo!"

Seriously. If you can't pause and save the cut scene where you are so you don't have to watch it all at once, then Hideo Kojima is an asshat with a hard-on for his own games. That's just inconsiderate.

How is a 90 minute cut scene boring? It's like watching a movie. I'll get the pop corn.

Also you can PAUSE and SKIP the cut scenes.

Im fucking stoked. I think its awesome, because YES, I AM A METAL GEAR SOLID FANBOY.

I'm with Blindside on this one, I'll grab some popcorn and a beer out of the fridge, sit back in the lazyboy chair, and prepare for movie time.

Of course, I have no kids, no girlfriend, and no life... so that lets me "cope" better

Why are you people so whiny.

The 4.6gig install is official, its on the back of the box,and I've seen it myself. All I have to say is that if you bought a ps3, expect buy a new hard drive soon, because all our games are going to be like this, so live with it. BTW, HD's are freak'n cheap, so stop whining. At least you can buy a non-360 branded harddrive unlike the 360.

Regarding the 90 minute cutscene, what the freak is wrong with you people. Right its just a freak'n rumor. A RUMOR! Why are you people getting angry about a unsubstantiated rumor. Even if its true, you can pause and skip scenes. If you think mgs4 is bad, you must have never played Xenosaga 1, now that game was 90% cutscene.

Please stop whining, right now we don't know for sure if the 90min thing is strue, and even if it is, whats wrong with that. What makes it bad game if it has cutscenes?

I really hate this young Emo generation, all they do is freak'n whine.

@BlindsideDork: Because I prefer to PLAY my games, not WATCH them. It's why I play games to begin with.

Also, can you save in the middle of a cutscene, or if you legitimately have somewhere to go in the middle do you hafta start it all over again? I feel like without movie-like controls (pause, fast forward, etc.) it'd be a huge annoyance.

I don't care about the 90 min cutscenes. No, I like it! This is what makes Metal Gear awesome, it's got story. And it's not ugly so why care? If you want to play an action paced game you'd better play COD4 or something like that. I like my games to be an experience. With story, movies and gameplay elements. Everything stuffed in one game. What's 90mins on a whole game? Nothing.

"Also you can PAUSE and SKIP the cut scenes"

POPCORN and BEER!!

@byrc: Alright, chalk it up to rumor, but even so, such long cut scenes in the middle of games are inconsiderate.

My issue was with being able to save in the middle and fast forward through them (in case you hafta turn off your system in the middle of one and don't wanna start all over again).

Also, claiming people shouldn't be mad about large installs because they will HAVE TO BUY OTHER SHIT to eventually play their games is not a quality argument. "Hey, don't worry, you'll just hafta buy something else later on to play games. That shouldn't anger you at all after dropping in excess of $500 on a system." That's asinine.

Also also, nice turning a topic of contention into a battle of "generations." Nice way to dispel all legitimacy in your argument. You must be right, you're old, wise, and anti-emo. Because that really holds a lot of water in the discussion at hand, you twat.

I think that is great. I am the kind of guy who loves playing the old FF where you barely move your fingers to select attack. An then wait, and wait and wait and then again attack.
I remember MGS2 ending was like 20 mins, and I enjoyed every single minute of it.
90 minutes? Awesome! I´ll run and grab the food and beer.

90 minutes sounds fucking insane. The ending cinematic in MGS2 was bad enough. I'm sure some sick, sick people wouldn't mind the long cut scenes but I have no such patience and would rather the cut scenes be shorter or the story to be told in game like in Bioshock for example.

@B-Radicate

Hey never said the installs were a good idea. I"m just saying its a fact of owning a ps3. If you dont' want to do that, then buy a 360. I have both, so I don't care what system you own. I"m just saying that installs are going to be mandatory for most triple A games. Either buy a 360 or shutup and live with it. This is not going to change. That was my point.

Yes I do believe kids these days are whiny assholes. Unless something is 100% perfect, then its not worth owning.

I mean seriously...to whine about 90 mintue cutscene in a 20-25 hour game is ridiculous.

I'm sorry that I let you down by making fun of the younger generation. But this generation has no patience. Unless you gunning people and destroying buildings in the next first 10 seconds of starting the game it ain't playable.

I don't wanna skip them I do wanna know what its all about, but its a VIDEOGAME.

I mean I get it, this games has fans and fanboys ( not the same thing mind you ). More power to you all. But 90 minutes? A story more expansive than the Godfather TRILOGY? This is A VIDEOGAME ok? Its main purpose should not be to be a digital movie, its supposed to be interactive.

If I wanted a 10 hour narrative experience and a great story I would just put the Godfather Trilogy instead. When the gameplay itself takes a back seat to allow a 90 minute cutscene it is no longer a game.

I get how some people might like that, but MGS fans around the world need to start calling their object of their obsession an Interactive Animated Movie, not a game.

BlindsideDork: Yes but by skippable do they mean the entire 90 minute cut-scene or skip chapters like a DVD? It's not much help if all you can do is pause and skip the whole thing, but if you switch the PS3 off you have to go right back to the start. Will there be rewind and fast forward options? It seems that if they want to have a near movie length cut-scene they better give DVD controls over it too.

to all these people talking about "oh as long as I can pause it it's ok!!" how does that make sense? so your going to pause it and then just leave the game on the whole time while you go to work or do something else then come back and finish off this 90 min epic? sucks for you if the game gets shut off by accident.

So it IS FMV

people have been saying non stop its all in game engine rendered cutscenes.

this explains why kojima said it took up so much of the BD.

i've always said the only limitation of DVD for this gen is HD FMV, this seems to prove it again.

I think its taking gaming in a completely wrong direction. Surely games should be making something that hasnt been done already. If i wanted to watch a 90min cutscene id rather do it in the cinema.

I remember when games were about pressing buttons and stuff.

Fuck Metal Gear, its been shit since the first one and i would much rather play some of it clever and involving gameplay then its mediocre long winded cutscenes.

GTA4 fits on a standard DVD, I image the majority of the playable game is in the hard disc download - the reason this game is so big will be the cut scenes. This will either be great (if the story is engaging) or infuriating. I hope this is gonna be awesome but I fear the inevitable 'feelings' codec conversations.
It seems that you need to spend even more money on a ps3 these days as the hard drive space problem arises again. We are not all made of money. I hate the fact that the 360 has no default HD and that the PS3 one is gonna be inadequate if you own a number of games, both companies look pretty stupid in my opinion. Seems that the phrase "Fit for purpose" was never mentioned at any board meanings.

I'm away to play my Vextrex, ah the glorious lines.

This is getting mixed opinions on all sites. And it's pretty apparent who says what.

Metal Gear Solid fans welcome the 90 minute cutscenes, I myself am reminded of the epic MGS3 intro that was over forty minutes. And MGS2 ending which I've replayed several times.

While the gamers that haven't touched a Metal Gear game since the olden days ones hate this idea. The oft used phrase by these people is "If I want to play a game, I play a game, if I want to watch a movie I'll watch a movie."

I think you need to understand the scale of the story in order to agree that 40-90 minutes is pretty much okay.
But they do have to include some kind of save feature.

MGS gameplay has always been extremely tethered to the cutscenes, you have to involved in the cutscene in order to know what you're going to do next, if you plan on buying MGS4 with the intention of skipping scenes, you're better off not buying the game at all.

seriously if anyone expected anything less than this you are a fool. especially if youve played past mgs games you know kojima has the blood of a classic hollywood director dying to tell a great story and with the tech now he can and with ryan payton as a key member of the crew im pretty sure he saw what a lot of you did if this rumor is true in that people will want the ability to come back to the 90min cut scene later in the day if they so choose.
