Fancy some new gameplay footage from Metal Gear Online? If that's what you woke up hoping for this morning, then fret not, because we have you covered. This is a nice lengthy slice of sniper gameplay, showing how oddly subdued an online Metal Gear game is going to potentially be compared to the explosions and homophobic taunting we've come to commonly associate with multiplayer gaming. Notice the keyword though -- potentially.
In the right hands of the right players, this could be a thoughtful, strategic, more mature online gaming experience that we don't see enough of in the action genre. In the more likely and numerous wrong hands of wrong players, however, one can expect to see Metal Gear Online ignore all the original core gameplay and devolve into a mindless run n' gun fragfest. Kind of like what happened with Gears of War. I have some moderate hope that Metal Gear, of all games, can move away from the same old shotgun blasting garbage, but it's not ultimately up to the developers, it's up to the gamers how this finally plays online when they begin shaping the landscape of MGO to the the style of the masses.
I still play gears in that thoughtful, strategic way, which is probably why I so easily kill most people I play. MGO does look pretty cool, though it is still going to take more than this for me to buy a PS3.
You never really see when someone gets shot. The gun backfires even before hitting the target. WTF? This happens mostly with far away targets. I noticed this in the single player demo of MGS4 as well. I don't like that.
well those who decide to play it strategically like it's meant to be will find that they will be much higher up in the leaderboards than the trash that makes up the majority of the other players. but also don't forget that in the single player metal gear games you are forced to be stealthy if you want to get past even the first level... i've never played GoW so i wouldn't know, but i'm pretty sure it's not like that in that game.
Playing MGS:Portable Ops online is exactly what he said. Frag-fest, no strategy. I just gave up on that as soon as I started. If I want a massive cluster-fuck of ammo into my face, then I'll play resistance. Resistance allows you to stay alive for about 5 seconds on average, but I can hang.
@Orionsaint, apparently you've never shot a gun before. A .38 special flys nominally at 600 feet per second. And it's not a backfire, its called recoil.
It's not been my experience, personally, that strategists in online games are the most successful players. Maybe it's just because I suck and play with people that suck, but those in Gears of War who ignore cover and just run around randomly with a shotgun tend to be the winners.
Anyway, currently there is no need for a multiplayer experience outside of Gears of War, because every online action game is the same. When Halo 3 comes out, people will migrate from Gears, but it'll still be the same run n' gun.
I don't understand why people want online modes to be compulsory in games -- you've played Gears, haven't you? Why do you need a less popular version?
I have trouble with Call of Duty 4 and that's not exactly a run and gun type deal. It can be, but I've noticed if I do that, I get killed double what I kill. The learning curve for this looks to be double that of CoD 4. I'm going to pass on this. It's just too scary and loosing every damn time is going to be horrible.
So, this means I'll stick with Halo. Not a fan boy, I just find it easier to run around and jump around with two bullet hoses. Plus, I find it funner to play those games with friends. All the vehicles and stuff. It's just my personal preference.
I rented Splinter Cell a while back and hated it. I was so frustrated. I went online, and boom! It was horrible. It looks great for you guys that like that sort of stuff, so good for you dudes. Have fun when it comes out.
Looks bland. MGS4 is the one game I have to give credit to the PS3 for. But making people pay $60 for a online portion that should be included when I'm going to be playing COD4 and Halo 3 online?
That looks like a pretty good time. I tend to get annoyed when people don't play the games like they were intended to be played (i.e. Counter-Strike: Source Deathmatch style maps), so I too hope that this game doesn't follow the same fate. Here's hoping...
Jim,
I agree with you completely with the jam n' blam style of online gaming. I've been playing the COD4 beta and it's just like any other came, Halo, etc idiots running around as fast as they can shooting people in the back, etc. It devolves the nuances and speciality tactics a game designed to be utilized to set it apart form other games. So instead of blue and red master chiefs -youve got uncle sam soldiers and yasar arafats plugging eachother on a dusty middle eastern steet. I noticed the higher ranked players were still using the base assualt rifles so they can jam n blam. I tried using a sniper rifle but the games I was in made it a nn winning solution. I wish we could build in perameters into the game only allowing certain weapons etc so the uniqueness of the game and map could be enjoyed. I've studied soem battle tactics and what goes on in Halo,COD4,etc is nothing close to the real thing-its just a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off freneticlally fragging eachother in the back. Lets hope Kojima built in some safeguards to not have MGS turn into just another jam n' blam teenager shooting spree.
I think the difference in those games will be the class system that can create a more compelling game then your standard frag-fest. I'm looking forward to team fortress 2 since that game seems to be emphasizing the class system so that they compliment each other and reward the player for working together.
I like how the game says "Korea, Korea, Korea, Korea ,Korea". More games should do that.
In terms of gameplay, the real masters of Metal Gear Solid 3 Online just master the headshot. That's all the game is about. Hide, headshot. If you can do it flawlessly, you are one of the world's greatest players. If not, either get ready to die, or enjoy running around with the shotgun and hope you get real lucky.
From the looks of it, this version will be no different.
Okay then recoil. But I still would like to see the person I shoot get shot. My view shouldn't quickly pan away. Sometimes realism should take backseat to a satisfying gameplay experience.
Didn't anyone else play MGS3 online? I was terrible at it, but I still had a good time (usually). It did seem to be unique among most of the other online shooters. The headshot comment is accurate though; those who had mastered it kicked the crap out of me every single time.
Yeah I blew a whole spring break playing MGS 3 online, it was pretty intense. Being able to pull off a clutch headshot did indeed put you way ahead of the competition, I ended up climbing within the top 500 on the ladder but I did not get the perfect FOXHOUND rating.
IMO, this game looks like ass. I don't know how far along it is, but if it's going to be a MP only a la Shadowrun, it's going to need a lot more polish than this
