Metal Gear movie confirmed; Uwe Boll seen sniffing around Sony Pictures lot photo

Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau has confirmed that a Metal Gear Solid movie is official and will be coming to a theater near you. Question is, will it suck hard? And is Uwe Boll banned from the set? Lookie here:

"We're working with the Metal Gear guys," Landau told GameSpot following his D.I.C.E. Summit keynote in Las Vegas. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie-telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"

Landau also hinted the Metal Gear Solid movie may just be the beginning. "There are other games we are looking to develop," the executive said. "We're working with one of my favorite producers right now on an idea for an EverQuest movie." The producer was apparently of such stature that Landau declined to name him. "I'll let him disclose that," he said cryptically.

So is this a good idea? Video game to movie transitions don't usually work out so well -- we debated this topic in Podtoid 16 for a bit.

[Thanks Zach]

i think kojima will be very protective and get the shit done proper, like frank miller.

"How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?"

A good start would be hiring some rocket scientists to figure out the plot of the games before starting on the screenplay.

I say have Kojima direct it himself. What he did with MGS3 was amazing.

The game kind of plays like a movie already, so unless they do something crazy that works it'll be like watching someone really horrible play MGS. Which, I'm sure you all know, is painful.

The biggest problem with the transition is that they try to make it so that people that know nothing about the game will get interested and they usually fail hard.

It's not meant for the average folk. If people don't know who solid snake is they don't belong in that theater audience.

Well, the movie is going to cost a shit-ton of money to make. They pretty much have to appeal to the largest audience possible.

And we all know who should play Snake.... Though I think he's a little too old now.

The movie should be CG, as there is nobody out there who could fit the part. Some could come close, like say, Hugh Jackman probably but either way, part of Snake's uniqueness is his voice. David Hayter is a must in this movie. I see no other option but to go the way of CG, unless they want the movie to fail.

I'm still more worried about Boll not being banned on the set. I'd like confirmation, lol.

DMV FTW.

Dick, if you can get that movie made, how about that John Woo version of Metroid? You know, with the guns and the doves in space.

BTW, Anna Nicole Smith is dead. So she won't be starring in this one. Sorry boys.

Summa, you should have used the scene when Snake puts a gun into his mouth instead... that's how i would react if Boll where named in this situation.

According to Wikipedia, "Her death is a product of the tragic american phenomenon of seek fame at all cost. How tragic!"

I read it on Wiki... such a shame. America's favorite trailer trash model is dead..and she never found out who her baby's daddy was.

but she was a sexy playboy!
RIP, Anna Nicole Smith.

This film's quality I think will be directly proportional to kojima's involvement. That's assuming of course the powers that be don't fuck up too badly with the director, producer and cast. And they don't pander too much to non gamers. And they don't make it into a pointless shalow action flick.

..Yeah, this is almost definately going to suck.

They better start with Metal Gear. Original. Let us see Snake as a rook, and Metal Gear Solid after that.

It'd be a little weak for newcomers of the story to experience the twist of "Hey remember that dude we mention every once in a while? Big Boss? Yeah, GENETIC CLONE, INTERESTING EH?!" and they're like "wtf, who?"

Stuff with the ninja would make more sense too. And especially if they ever make it to MGS3.

It's going to suck because the company producing it has the word 'Sony' in it and not 'Nintendo'.

no, it's official when they announce the writer, director and lead actors followed by an official release date. studios "announce" movies all the time that never get made.

this is why i was never duped into believing Halo was getting made. a year after fox and universal signed on, they had nothing to show for it but a rookie director and a script that was edited 18 times before it was thrown out completely.

so until sony secures all that i can't be bothered to care.

I don't see this ending up a quality movie. The plot will most likely be confusing and hard to follow. My advice would be for them to make sure the scripts plot is entertaining and easy to follow, but then I guess it'd just be Splinter Cell.
