Metal Gear Essentials: another reason to buy them all over again? photo

You may have set your sights on the upcoming MGS4 as the next item from Konami to satisfy your Metal Gear needs, but there's no reason why you can't revisit the great games of the past for a refresher course during the interim. Apparently Konami is banking on just that, as PlayAsia has an interesting pre-order listed on the PS2 section of their storefront: Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection

For the low price of $34.90 + $4.00 shipping and handling, you will get the play the three games you've waxed poetic about all over again: Metal Gear Solid, the director's cut of MGS2: Substance, and MGS3: Subsistance. That ought to keep your PlayStation 2 busy for a while. Not only does this seem like a reasonable price, but it looks to be the perfect excuse to retire those tired, old, blue disks form the first game that haunt your otherwise pristine collection. Besides, don't you want all the boxes to match?

[Thanks, Vegas and brownkid]

Giving someone that as a gift seems like a great way to introduce them to the MGS series.

Is this Japan only or is this for American systems? Because if its NTSC, I think I just might need to change my pants.

I've never played MGS, as I've said before. And would LOVE if this came out for PC. Then I would FINALLY be able to play them.

Also, I am totally going to buy this. I already have MGS and Subsistance, but Substance was stolen long ago, and this is the perfect excuse to get it back. FINALLY I SHALL MASTER THE VR MISSIONS!

For the low price of something like $8 I bought MGS3 new at Best Buy, and for $3 I got MGS2 used at gamestop. Already had Twin Snakes for Gamecube at the time, which I probably paid $12 for.

Wedge's Avatar
Wedge at 01/27/2008 13:10
Jeese you people are confused.

Firstly, Japan and the US both use NTSC, however the region flag is for US.

Secondly, I don't think this is going to replace your blue discs, because if you look at the box for MGS1, it shows a PS1 logo instead of a PS2 logo.

And @m3ds
WHAT. THE. FUCK? Those are two of the cheapest games in existence, are you daft? Every standard version of MGS 1-3 is worth about $5, this compilation is only worthwhile because it has the Special Editions of MGS2 & 3.
h3lios's Avatar
h3lios at 01/27/2008 13:12
Saw this on the c-blogs yesterday. Already pre-ordered. And yes these are for US consoles. They've got the NTSC U/C mark on them.

I'm in this entirely for MGS1. I have MGS2 Substance and both versions of Snake Eater, and I have the Twin Snakes, but I need me a good copy of the original MGS. AND HERE WE HAVE IT!! Awesome.

I have 1 & 2 on PC, so I'm kinda thinking about it. Still, that's a lot of money considering I JUST bought Subsistence for PS3. Maybe if I could get $20 for it, would I "upgrade" to this set.

I heard the Japanese version of this set was MGS2 (not Substance) and MGS3 (not Subsistence). Is it confirmed that we're getting the "director's cut" versions and not the basic ones? I don't see the subtitles on that box, anywhere.

@Wedge

I dunno why he paid so much for MGS1, but MGS2 Substance can be a little on the expensive side (if that's the one he bought). You can get Sons of Liberty for less than $5, but Substance is harder to find an a lot more expensive (on the PS2, anyway.....I bought the Xbox version for $5 and the PC version for $10, but they both suck).

This news sucks for me, though......I just got Substance for $25. I've been looking for another copy for years, because I love that game so damn much. I dropped 70 hours into the VR missions alone when I first had it.

Wow, this is spooky. I had just gotten MGS2 and MGS3 used, but I really wanted the director's cut editions, and I wanted them new. So I sold them hoping that something like this would come out.

Thank you, Kojima-san. :D

If you ask me I think they screwed the pooch a bit here. If they had included the twin snakes version it would have probably doubled the sales, since it would offer an exclusive value that MGS diehards would snap up, the fact is a lot of people already own all those 3 games. Id be first in line if it included a ps2 port of twin snakes.. oh well. :(

Twin snakes was a horrid remake.

And only the first MGS is really worth it(the PS1 original), MGS2 was complete shit and MGS3 was mediocre at best, good story though.
