Metacritic to tighten up user reviews following fanboy score wars

Metacritic to tighten up user reviews following fanboy score wars photo
     Fanboys

The other day I ranted quite sternly about how console fanboys were using Metacritic as their stupidest battleground yet, deliberately giving platform exclusives low scores before they'd even launched. It seems that Metacritic has finally gotten fed up, and will now be tightening the system, making it a bit harder for these morons to screw around.

Metacritic games editor Marc Doyle has that stated user reviews were accepted before a game's launch strictly for the benefit of those who had been able to play a game ahead of the street date, which of course is no longer the case. Another reason for the current problem is Metacritic's easy sign-up process. "The founders were really interested in not having people sign up for a really huge registration process just so they can participate on the site," Doyle explains. "Obviously that's been exploited."

People abuse the freedom they're given, that's nothing new. So how will Metacritic be fixing this? Firstly, new users will need more than just an email to get a Metacritic account and start voting. In addition, pre-release voting will no longer be acceptable.

Good fixes to come, although of course, usability for legitimate Metacritic users has now been diminished a little. I do hope the fanboys are proud of themselves for that, the pathetic little ticks.

Sorry when I think about it that was a stupid question. Cblogs will never attract stupidity of that level as the unwashed do not get their input represented with a big neon number score.
On that note when do we get to vote on a Cblog's quality, or Jim sterling's for that matter. lol.

I think most fanboys that do come here realize that this isn't the site for them. They are much more at home commenting on youtube videos or random internet gaming forums, and I like it that way. Most just want attention, and when they don't get it here they move on. Also its nice to see Metacritic take action, its just a shame it had to be done under these circumstances.

That was a rant, Jim? You've really gone soft.

Slightly diminished freedom is a small price to pay to keep these vandals in check. Short of active moderation, I can't think of many other ways to counter this.

I don't like this wording: "People abuse the freedom they're given".

Like they need to be handed their freedom.

Anyway,

It is unfortunate but a necessity I think.

User reviews on Metacritic are just pointless, they should be eliminated altogether. It's simply not its business, and I'm against the "everyone does everything approach". Do one thing, do it well. Metacritic is an excellent aggregator of "official" reviews, and it should stay that way.

I agree with Xenon. The forums they provide are a perfectly acceptable method for people to discuss (intelligently if possible) the various aspects of the game be they good or bad. Perhaps if they autocreate a thread for each game as people comment it will be easier for folks to find out about the game.

Are they gonna go back and delete old user scores? I think they'd be better off getting rid of the whole thing, but that won't happen.

This is what they should've done in the first place. Good move on their part. It's a shame that people abuse their freedom so much. Just because you CAN do something, it doesn't mean that you SHOULD. Common sense and common decency -- use them.

@Agent Orange
They're a nice counterbalance to the critics' ratings. Well, when they work, that is.

He isn't referring to general freedom, but the freedom of access and user review that Metacritic gave their users.

IGN had to disallow user reviews until after the street date years ago for the exact same reason.
Except back then the games were Resistance and Gears of War.
