Message on a wall: Frank West's words spotted in L4D2 DLC photo

Ordered Sam & Max during its first week? Enjoy some Sam & Max themed content in Valve's Team Fortress 2. Buy Left 4 Dead 2's "The Passing" DLC? Enjoy a message from Dead Rising's lead zombie smasher Frank West -- free of charge.

It was brought to our attention earlier this morning, via Original-Gamer, that Frank West makes the slightest of cameos in Valve's latest piece of DLC. Observable on a bathroom wall in Chapter 2 are the words of Frank West. "Otis," it prefaces, "Out of film, no helicopter. Zombies are too fast. Not going to make it." Signed Frank West.

As MTV Multiplayer notes, and we totally forgot about, this isn't the first time Valve has taken a cute jab at the Dead Rising folks. The Zombie Genocider Achievement in Dead Rising had players murdering 53,394 zombies (mostly in an underground garage) in order to earn the precious points. Left 4 Dead's Zombie Genocidest Achievement, a clear poke at Dead Rising, had players mowing down just one more: 53,395, to be exact.

53,395 is not one more than 53,395.

In that same room, on the opposite wall, there's a message from Crazy Dave of Plants vs Zombies fame. :O

What are you guys talking about? Brad's math is perfecto, as always.

Also, I guess Valve didn't ask Capcom's permission on this. Makes it funnier in my opinion.

btw below the Frank West quote is a reference to Shaun of Dead. the wall says that Ed is the king of the zombies, where in the movie Ed asks Shaun who made him the fucking king of the zombies.

The bottom part about the dog is also a reference to Dead Rising (It said something about someone going back for their dog, a reference to the old lady who started the whole willamette fiasco)

@Nolan South: Actually, I think that is a reference to Dawn of the Dead (2004).
It was signed by "Nicole" - a character in the film that, for lack of a better phrase, FUCKED EVE-RY-ONE when she tried to get her dog, then everyone (who acted -just- as stupid as her) dropped everything and went after her.

Although, could very well be a nod to Dead Rising in wither context, but I think that film had quite an influence on Left 4 Dead as a whole.

BTW, I believe there is a 28 Days Later reference on that wall as well. I read that "The End Is Really FUCKING Neigh" was in that film, but not sure.

Do I have to point out the even cooler reference in the graffiti scrawl?

Also, Prototype had an achievement for killing 53,396 peeps. Needless to say, I came nowhere close. (Though I did mow down all 53,394 in that fucking garage in Dead Rising.)

Passing was damn good, I just wish my favorite character, the character I ALWAYS use in L4D1 and the best character there has been in these games didn't die. So anticlimatic too.

@Murumasa123

I second that.

Also, weren't we supposed to be able to fight some sort of infected survivor that would drop special weapons?

It was pretty surprising though when I just happened to stumble upon the body of the dead person. I was literally yelled "Woah! No way!!!"

@DeltaBurnt:

There were a few zombies of other unnamed "survivors" that would drop items when shot. They also haul ass in the other direction when they see you, so you have to be quick when you hear someone call it out. "Hey, that zombie is holding something!" from Nick or whomever.

The Passing was enjoyable. I really liked it,
but...
Am I the only one who found it strange to see the three left were unaffected by the death of one of their crew? Especially since the death looked very recent and fresh.

That was one of the most disappointing things I have ever experienced. Yeah, the maps were great and all, with the graffiti and the dialog, but when you find out who is gone it totally drops the ball. They never actually said they were dead though, at least not in my play, so maybe there's hope that Valve didn't fuck up something like that so badly.

I presume that the remaining members had lost their friends and family. So I think that the remaining crew members had come to terms with the death of people close to them very quickly or they too would be dead.
Or...
Since they don't mention the death of one of their crew, there may have been a bit of a commotion resulting in a accidental/purposeful death.

I think it is typical of Valve to leave certain plot elements vague.

Is there some history between Valve and Capcom that I'm unaware of? Why is this seen as a 'jab' or a 'poke' at Dead rising, and not an homage?

chaos: i think it was just wording. It's clearly a loving homage from fellow gamers, like the achievement (also the same achievement in prototype). It's some love to a fellow zombie game.

its in a room with zombie references to other beloved zombie games/films, so its not in anyway a pointed jab, more playful poke.

Well we know who died now, all we need is the how.

I got some dialogue where they said they lost a good man. Im going to play it again with subtitles on. Problem is it can be different.

Also, loved the Ellis/Zoey talk at the start. Can love bloom in the zombie apocalypse?
