Megadeth hates 'dinosaur bands' who don't embrace videogames and the 'net

     Rock Band

Despite not being able to spell correctly, I must confess that Megadeth is capable of banging out a decent tune. The metal band is also pretty "happening" and "with it" in terms of embracing new forms of social entertainment, be it Youtube, MySpace and videogames.

In fact, frontman Dave Mustaine looks down on any band that isn't following these trends, labeling them "dinosaurs" and suggesting that they're all stupid. I am sure he'll be Twittering about that later.

"In fact, I think the advent of these new games and YouTube and MySpace and being able to upload your music — it's the way of the future," exclaims Mustaine. "These old fucking dinosaur bands that don't want to put their music up on iTunes or have anything to do with you guys doing games with Rock Band and stuff like that. It's just stupid. You know, just have mercy on them and feel sorry for them and buy our stuff instead."

He has a point, of course. It's rather blinkered to ignore the current trends and how they can be used to promote your work. The various online social networks and videogames out there are excellent promotional platforms. To not use them is -- as Mustaine so eloquently puts it -- stupid.

Fuck artistic integrity. What is the point of becoming a professional musician if you don't intend to "sell out"? Bills must be paid, mouths must be fed.

This may not be the point you were getting at, but the "plastic guitars" line seemed to show your distaste for these kinds of games, which often leads down the whole "selling out" path.

Well, being that they are actual dinosaurs, I'm pretty sure that Megadeth would be able to accurately spot others.

*I do like Megadeth, for the record.

@Char Aznable

Nope. I'm an expert at three instruments and competent with another two, and I love playing Rock Band with friends and family. And I have no problem with artists who want to make money. In fact, I think good musicians should be rewarded with success. However, some people aren't in it for the money, and if those people don't want their songs in Rock Band then that's their prerogative. Is that wrong?

Yeah, good call. I misinterpreted what you said earlier.

People can do whatever they want with their own music, but it would be silly to not consider branching out to RB/GH. So many people have been exposed to a wide range of music through these games.

I think it was Rob Halford who said that he had 13-year olds coming up to him, asking for autographs and saying that they never would have heard of him or his band had they not played Rock Band.

So, there's one dinosaur band that saw first-hand the impact the plastic instrument games can play in their careers.

Granted, one of the hold-outs that I'm sure Dave is referring to is Led Zeppelin, who really doesn't need the extra notoriety, so why bother pushing them.

Still...I would love to play some Kashmir or Black Dog in RB2...

You may start for the love of music, but you stay in it for the money. If musicians don't want their music in this medium thats their choice. I just can't believe they wouldn't want to do it when someone shows them how much money they could be making. If you're stuborn enough to call every band on iTunes a sell out I hope you enjoy playing in a local dive of a bar for food on friday night. But whatever, to each his own.

I definitely believe in the artist's right to choose how and when their art is used so that it should always be used in the right context. However, I agree that when it comes to holding out from iTunes and the like (AC/DC) and music games (AC/DC until recently and Led Zeppelin), the decision should be made with an understanding of the medium, and not shunning things just because they are new and you don't understand them. Which is the point I believe Mustaine is trying to get across, just in typical Dave fashion.

Dave Mustaine ftw!

I agree with him - artists need to change with the times, piracy is nullifying CDs as the primary distribution medium. Of all the digital mediums, rb/gh give the most enjoyment for the buck to the consumer.

Dinosaurs prolly didn't like it - but despite thier dislike meteor struck.
Most that can be done is slightly slowing this extinction of copyrighter music, with lots of collateral damage and big bucks for lawyers.

However this time around it's not the bands that are dinosaurs. Labales are up for extinction. Artists will simply shift - live performance and material goods like t-shirts, limited editions and all the other swag for income, but recorded music for promotion (and prolly "pay if you liked it").

And...
Megadeth totaly rocks!

But what instrument would a T-Rex play?? There arms are too short to play bass, guitar, drums or even hold the mic. Can a band be taken seriously if their most bad-ass member plays a ukulele??

Dammit, I need a sketch of this haha.

I'm just glad to see that Dave Mustaine is still alive. I thought the insanity caused by sobriety would have done him in long ago. Megadeth kicks ass. Vic Rattlehead for President in 2012.

The-Excel: "I don't like metal or what it stands for but Megadeth has my respect."

I get that you don't like metal, but what do you mean you don't like what it stands for? That's a pretty retarded thing to say as metal doesn't just stand for one thing. Please explain what you meant.

Also, Megadeth sucks dick. They're pretty weaksauce, and Mustaine sounds like a chipmunk.

No one cares about Metallica. They've released one decent album in...what...10 years?
I know I say this shit all the time, but there are plenty of bad ass bands around that aren't big gay Death Metal growlers. We need some of THAT. If they worked on getting Sonata Arctica and Evergrey on the games, they could start working on a keytar peripheral. Their music is set up so that the guitarist and the keyboardist get awesome parts to play, and the lyrics aren't so boring either.

Older bands that we need are like Iced Earth and Blind Guardian, they've been around for ~20 years. Nevermore has been around for like 13 years. I know Persuader and Dark Empire are relatively new, but they still kick ass.

even if you've got some of that integrity games like Rock Band are perhaps one of the greatest marketing tools ever invented. I know i'm not the only person here whos found a band/song they like but might have not known about otherwise while playing rock band.
