Mega Man's 20th Anniversary countdown ends tonight photo

Mega Man turns twenty tonight at midnight, and to help build anticipation, Capcom has thrown up a countdown timer on the official Mega Man 20th Anniversary page. This is Capcom's second countdown in as many months, the last one being in the middle of October that ended in a cavalcade of big announcements, including the announcement of Street Fighter 4. Can we expect an announcement of equal measure when this countdown concludes?

More after the jump.

Capcom has already done a lot to imply that they think this date is important. The created a five minute video to promote the event. They've made buckets of new 20th Anniversary specific merchandise like shirts, pins, and other baubles. Keiji Inafune, the driving creative force behind Mega Man for the past twenty years, did a promotional signing in New York City to draw attention to Mega Man's birthday. And for god sakes, Capcom is actually keeping track of the exact date that Mega Man was "born". What other video game character gets that kind of treatment? I'm guessing that with all this build up, Capcom will do more than end today's countdown with a simple "Happy Birthday, Mega Man!", a few token "W00ts!", and a self-congratulatory hip bump or high five

Some here at Destructoid believe this countdown will end with Mega Man being announced as an official character in Super Smash Bros Brawl. Others think that's poppycock. I personally could go either way on that area of speculation, but in addition to any Brawl related bombs being dropped, I firmly believe something in the form of a new Mega Man game from Cacpom will be announced within 24 hours. There is already a rumor floating around that a new Mega Man title for the Wii is in development.  People like me are hoping that if this game materializes, it will feature the one true Mega Man, the one that is actually turning twenty tonight, and not one of his many fun but inferior bastard children.

So I've already got my expectations set pretty high, meaning I could very well be in for a disappointment. But as a certified countdown addict, I'm ready to stay up tonight and watch the clock tick to zero, regardless of the potential for a lackluster climax. In fact, I do that every night anyway. Not satisfied with just celebrating the New Year's countdown every December 31st, I actually countdown the hours to every new day. I wear a sparkly pointy hat, decorate the house with streamers, bring noise makers, write down my "New Day's Resolutions", light off some fireworks, the whole enchilada. Other than having a visit from the local police every night at around 1am, and the death threats from my neighbors, I'm yet to see the downside of my daily holiday fun.

So for me, tonight will be just another crazy countdown to Monday. But how about you? You going to stay up and see if Mega Man's birthday will herald any hot info?

I'll be honest, while I don't really care that a new Street Fighter is coming out, I'm really interested into their announcements about the game.

Maybe a 3d graphics, side scrolling Megaman? Maybe a new fad for Capcom?

Megaman in Brawl is almost guaranteed as far as I'm concerned. He's the most asked for 3rd party Character after Sonic, followed by Simon Belmont. And considering Capcom's and Nintendo's love for each other over the last generation, I am positive Megaman will be in Brawl.

And yeah, a new Megaman game is obvious.

They will announce that all Mega Man franchises will converge to a new one, with a rich plot that has been worked on for the last 10 years, astonishing cell-shaded 2.5D graphics and all new gameplay, with the bosses' "weapons" being divided in offense/defense/suport and you can actually use them all at the same time, just needing to assign each to a button on your controller. Willy will die. Protoman will die. Ash will become scrap forever and the only two playable characters will be the Blue Bomberhimself and the Mighty Zero.

Or so I wish :)

Probably a new game. Why the fuck would they announce Mega Man for Brawl? If that was happening, the smashdojo would announce it tommorow.

There is already a 3D side scrolling Megaman. It's on the PSP and it's great. It has a level editor and it kicks ass.

@EternalDeathSlayer,

They did the same for Sonic. Nintendo showed off Sonic in a press conference and, later that night, he showed up on the dojo.

As long as it isn't another DS Mega Man, I'm cool.

Mega Man announcemtn to brawl would be on the BRAWL site. Only problem the announcement time of Mega Man and the Smash updates are not in sync. You think they will let someone else declare a character as big as Mega Man into the game?

Get real!

C'mon Capcom, I did buy Megaman Anniversary and Megaman X collection, the least you could do is finish off my collection with that.

I never meant to imply that the Capcom site would be the ones to announce Mega Man in Brawl. But all the same, I don't think it's impossible that for this one night the Dojo will update a few hours early to coincide with the Mega Man site's countdown, or that they could announce the Capcom side of the announcement (new game) on their site and then the Nintendo side of the announcement (Mega Man in Brawl) on their site a few hours later.

That's what I meant to imply as a possibility. I would have stuck all that all in the post, but then my superiors would tell me is was too long and needs to be edited. Then as form of negative re-enforcement they would start with the "Lettucehead" comments again, and with in seconds I'd be back in the fetal position, sobbing uncontrollably, balled up in the corner of the room.

That's why haven't done more blogs this week. It takes a while for me to pull myself back from that regressed state and start writing about video game news again.

Is it just me or is that pic at the beginning of the article awesome? Though, shouldnt the original megaman be at the front instead of Grey?

Here's what i'm hoping comes from this supposed announcement ordered from most wanted(top) to i want it sure...but the one above it is more wanted(bottom):
-Megaman Legends 3(on Wii, DS, or PSP, but only on one system sos they can push the tech to teh limit)
-Megaman(Original or X) is a playable character in SSBB
-Megaman 9 that actually concludes that series and leads DIRECTLY into the X series(same can be said for X9 i guess)
-The rest of the Maveric Hunter X PSP remakes(or the Powered Ups)
-An american release of the PSP versions of Legends(and 2 and misadventures, maybe as a compillation)
-I kinda want this, but not at the expense of the above, Capcom announces they will use the name Rockman(as well as the other japanese conventions) in America as well as Japan.

Basically, as long as it doesn't involve the exe series or try to screw around with the Cyber elf wars period between the X and Zero series(seriously, i dont think that needs more elaboration than what was given in the Zero games) i think i'll be happy.

If they do put rockman in brawl, he'd most definitely have to be my new fav. But only if its the OG Blue Bomber - screw X.

Also, his special blaster move would have to be way cooler than Samus'.
